I have a Timberwolf 250 that will only shift into reverse when it is in gear. It will not shift if in neutral. Has anyone had the same issue and if so how did you fix it?

Can you provide more information? Because this doesn't make sense. If you shift it to neutral then it should stay in neutral. If you want it in reverse then you have to shift it into reverse.

Check all the shift levers for operation and proper movement, grease joint if required. Check the oil level in the transmission if you have a dipstick or the means to do so.

The more information you provide the better!

There is a separate reverse lever. If the quad is in neutral the reverse lever will not move but if you change to 1st gear, then the reverse lever will move and allow you to change into reverse. Of course you need to simultaneously be pressing the rear brake pedal.

Now i understand. Sounds like something is out of adjustment. Usually they have safeties in place. Check to see if any of the linkages are loose or bolts that have come off from vibration or broken. On a two lever system, the safeties prevent the operator to shift into reverse if you're going forward without going through neutral or stopping and so on.

If you are courageous to attempt to fix it yourself, one thing I'd recommend you do is take a lot of pictures... almost for every step that you take or task you perform! I promise this comes in handy. If you share more photos, I'm sure we can resolve it together :)

Let me know what you find!

My Bear Tracker 250 requires that it be in first gear before shifting into reverse. It is designed that way and talks about it in the owner manual. I suspect that your Timber Wolf uses the same transmission in which case there is no problem . See below.

From Owners Manual

Drive select lever operation and reverse driving
CAUTION:Before shifting, stop the machine and re-turn the throttle lever to its closed posi-tion. Otherwise the transmission may bedamaged.NOTE:

When shifting into reverse, the transmissionmust be in first gear.

1. Bring the machine to a complete stopand return the throttle lever to the closedposition

.2. Apply the rear brake pedal.

3. Shift the transmission into first gear.

4. While pulling the lock release button, move the drive select lever toward therear until it completely stops

Thank you for this info. It just seemed weird as my other three Yamaha ATVs all need to be in Neutral before engaging reverse. I am sure that it is the exact same transmission

Just getting into this issue really. Been replacing solenoids but now I'd like to track down the problem. This time I'm not getting neutral/reverse lights or start button. Was on a creek ride when it started doing this recently. It cranks by arcing the solenoid and gives me no light or start button but if I crank with the pull cord....the neutral light and the button work. Turn it off and try to crank with the key and nothing. I'm looking into the safety switch issue tomorrow and re charging the battery. Just figured this was odd enough of a problem that you guys might be familiar. Thanks

I am having an issue with a hs500. I bought it broken and have been trying to get it running. It seems to be starving for fuel. If I put my hand over the intake it will crank but will not run for very long because I'm not able to get the correct airflow with my hand. The things I have done so far are. Replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, mass airflow sensor, idle air adjuster, fuel injector, cleaned the throttle body, replaced the ecu, and still the same issue. I notice the injector does not spray when removed from the head. I dont know if that is common.

I am out of ideas on what to do next. I have removed the fuel line from the injector and it is getting plenty of fuel. If anyone has an idea on what could possibly be the issue I would be happy to try anything at this point.

Howdy ya'll. I am working ona 2000 Yamaha Breeze 125. It was in rought shape when I received it and I am working through issues as they pop up. The quad had been sitting for years. I was able to get her running again, but I need your help with the following issue:
I don't trust the transmission yet and I don't want to make problems any worse. So, I haven't pushed things hard at all. Low rpms, less than 5mph in reverse.

      Nuetral: Runs as expected
Reverse: She seems to be driving fine at slow speeds. Going into reverse at idle is fine, coming out of reverse back into neutral won't work (the shifter is just stuck). As soon as I turn off the quad, I am able to shift around without any issue.
Forward: It slips. It seems to only transfer power to the wheels on a smooth surface and going slightly downhill. When shifting into forward at idle, there is a clacking sounds during the transition. Shifting back to nuetral works just fine.

Other Notable Symptoms: There was old oil in the vbelt and when I was tuning the carb, it starting blowing out of the CVT cooling vent at the front of the quad. Made quite a mess. There is positive crankcase pressure due to piston blowby, that I have not decided whether or not I am going to fix (customer budget dependant).  Since the oil was old, much darker than the new oil that is in the crankcase, I am thinking it seeped past a bad seal while it was sitting for years. The oil that was in it when I first got it had gas in it.

Thoughts: I am thinking maybe there is an issue with the clutch. I worry about the old oil intermingling with the dry centrifugal clutch. I was thinking my next step would be to take the cover off of the clutch and inspect it.

Let me know what you all think. Any advice and ideas is greatly appreciated. This is only the 3rd quad I have worked on and I have a lot to learn.
