i have a honda foreman that was doing the same thing, turned out to be the run jet in the carb. idle jet was fine which allowed it to idle perfect but died as soon as you throttled up.

also if you have an aftermarket exhaust it can play havoc on some machines without some fine tuning.

yes i agree the local market where you live actually has a lot to do with the value. i have seen 1200 quads go for 3 times there value in the right area.
