Retainer plate behind sprocket on 1987 and prior (Model H) LT230E

This was a great fix for a machine I’ve had sitting broke for a couple years. However, I worry the newer style bearing will drift back into the case over time, without the grove and retaining clip. Why else would their be a grove and retaining clip on the old bearing?
