87 Big Bear Middle Gear

Recommended Posts

I'm having a heck of a time trying to calculate the middle driven gear shim for my 87 Big Bear 350. I've followed the service manual and gotten all my numbers... but when I do the calculations, I always end up with a negative value... I'm so friggin frustrated!

As per the manual:

My numbers:
d = 33
f = +08
c = 50.3
e = ???

I couldn't even figure out what my crankcase said... looked like gibberish! However, even if I took a guess at e, my answer is still negative because d seams like such a low value compared to the manual.

I  would contact  Yamaha and ask  them for assistance ...  Since  your  d  number is so  low ,  my  guess would be   it could be  124.33 ,  and  the  crankcase  number 12 (.12)

Please don't take those guesses  as accurate .. It  is  merely speculation on my  part.   Hopefully   you  can get a response  from  Yamaha  to  help  you .

Here  is  their   contact  page  for  Yamaha Canada .

I took another look and now I'm starting to think I'm trying to calculate the wrong thing. What I'm really trying to find is what size shims I need between the crankcase and bearing housing on the transfer case. The shims are number 17 in the diagram.

The manual has two different sections on calculating the middle driven gear shim. One using a feeler gauge between the crankcase and bearing housing and the other; the method in my original post. I'm thinking that I am overthinking this and that I should simply use a feeler gauge, rather than try to do whatever the heck my original post was about.

      Gday all,

      Been trying a couple different ways now to download a manual. Not sure what I am doing wrong but could someone walk me thru it?
      I go to DL page and click on link
      get a pop up for a PDfixer or something
      close that and then hit download button and no go
      tells me I have reached my limit but I have never DL anything ever.

      Hey I have a 1997 big bear 350 4x4
      I replaced the shifter shaft and the shift arm linkage and the rod when I installed them all I was unaware that you had to line the dot on the shifter shaft with the gap on the linkage arm gap put it all back  together and rode it I can't get it to shift in the right gears  I can move the shift cam by hand and goes in different gears but with the shifter shaft in it riding I can't put it in R or N
      Anyone know how to line up the shifter shaft and the shift cam s

      Hi guys
      My 87 Bear 350 won't start and could use a hand.
      Turn key on and Oil light turns on and then slowly fades out. (I think this is key to this) No start, not even a tick.
      battery and connections good
      A Solenoid post jump turns it over
      Neutral Safety Switch wire attached and seems good
      It has not had a wire/switch on Rear Brake Pedal ever since I had it.
      Any thoughts on some other things to troubleshoot this??

      I WANTED TO UPGRADE THE CARBURATOR ON MY 1992 BIG BEAR 350, SO I ORDERED A NEW CARB FROM EBAY.  ACCORDING TO THE WRITE-UP IT WAS A GOOD FIT FOR BIG BEARS FROM 1988 TO 1996.  WHEN I REMOVED MY ORIGINAL CARB I NOTICED THAT IT WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE NEW CARB MY CARB HAD TWO THROTTLE  CABLES THE NEW CARB ONLY HAD ONE CABLE.  HOW CAN I MAKE THIS CARB WORK ON MY TWO CABLE THROTTLE?
