2000 Honda 400ex

I'm in need of a replacement engine for my 2000 400ex or at least a bottom end. Can anyone help or at least give me some direction.

How do you know it needs to be replaced, have you had it checked out? Is it making noise? If you do it yourself, you can buy parts but if you are going to get it done, call around and get some quotes. lastly, just look online for a used engine if you can find one but not sure how you are with mechanical to DIY.
