Valve tuning tips 2000 Qrunner 500

I think i need to adj. the valves as I get some engine noise from the valve area when getting on the  throttle really good.  Lower rpm;s no noise.

 

Any tips/thoughts?  Also, i am relatively sure that the intake valves are the ones on the top and exh are the ones on the exhaust side...just need a dummy check as I have never worked on an engine before.

Intake are on top 

Exhaust on bottom

Intake: .05-.10mm (.002-.004 inch) Exhaust: .17-.22mm (.007-.009 inch).

So, I went in, rotated crank to the alignment mark for TDC - valves appeared shut, and the rockers moved a freely on intake and exhause side of valve port.

I do not have the adapter for my compression tester to fit the small plug threads but I figured since piston was at top, mark lined up, and the rockers had some play that I was TDC on compression stroke.

 

Am I thinking this through correctly?  I have never done valve adj. before and when I was done, I started her up and still hear noise when getting the RPM's up there and it sure sounds like the valves or something in the top end.

 

I also don't want to rule out that possibly the previous owners could have adjusted the valves on the wrong stroke and gave therefore masking the fact that it may not have actually be on the compression stroke that the rockers had play for me.

      When i get to about 10 mph i get a very (tinny ) noise from the right side of the engine / clutch area.
      originally I thought maybe something got caught between axle and skid plate ie : rock and was just rubbing producing that sound.
      I took off the skid plate and drove it and still had same sound.
      Checked the lug nots and they were a bit loose , tightened them and still same noise.
      Took off the what looks like an inspection plate on top of clutch cover and looked inside this apart and it is dry of any fluid.
      Not sure if there should be any fluid in there or not had clutch replaced 2 yrs ago with nominal riding since.
      I do not have the time or knowledge to take this apart and try and diagnose. The only repair areas around here are absolutely terrible.
      The shop I normally do the work are 2.5- 3 mos. behind. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

      13 ATVs and dirt bikes impounded from N.J. wildlife area. Riders face list of charges.
      State officials charged several people with various violations and impounded their ATVs and dirt bikes last weekend from the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area in Ocean County, authorities said.
      Police officers with the state’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation were investigating illegal off-road vehicle use in the management area on Saturday, July 25 when two ATV riders tried to flee, officials said.
      When officers caught up with them, they issued summonses for criminal obstruction, interference with the duties of a conservation police officer, and violations of wildlife management area use. The two ATVs were impounded, police said.
      The next day, a group of ATV and dirt bike riders from northern New Jersey drove past several “NO ATV” signs posted in the wildlife area known as “clay holes.”
      Clay holes, or “blue holes” are former gravel or sand mines filled with water. They are popular, although dangerous, destinations for teenagers and adults looking to beat the summer heat.
      Officers issued summonses to the riders for illegally operating off-road vehicles and for driving unregistered vehicles. They also wrote tickets for illegal swimming, possession of alcohol and entering a restricted area.
      In all, 13 ATVs and dirt bikes were impounded. The owners are facing fines starting at $274, and impound, towing and storage fees of at least $300, conservation police said.
      In a statement, police said “only registered, insured, street-legal vehicles are permitted in Wildlife Management Areas. Vehicles may only be operated on established roads and parking areas.”
