1998 Kawasaki prairie 400 4x2

Recommended Posts

Hello all ya'll guy's and gal's out there. I have been a member for some time and just kinda sit back and learn from the info from those of you who have been in this sport or in my case hobby for a long time. I recently bought (5 months ago) a 1998 Kawasaki Prairie 400cc 2 wheel drive in very good condition here in Florida for $1500 cash. I did all the normal stuff rebuilt the carb cleaned out the tank oil+filter air filter and spark plug and cleaned up the rear drum brake system, Front brake master will not spit so gonna have to pull that apart and soak as well as rebuild it I also bought some Kenda Bearclaw tires for the rear for $152 shipped (not yet installed)  I was wondering has anyone installed a front wentch on this model? and if so what brand? and can it be mounted some what flush to the front? Any info about this and anything ells that you could tell me both good or bad about this ATV would be very much appreciated , THANK YOU ALL AND HAVE AN AWESOME DAY!!!

Hello guys, I hope I am not invading your space, but as you can see the current state of my project here it's not but about 50% ATV. I am hoping that some one here can point me to a wiring schematic that I can reference since the "Complete wiring harness" i purchased from Amazon did not include a diagram of any kind.

The ones that I am finding on line vary greatly but none show the connections for the separate 5 wire connector coming from the motor.

Can someone tell me where these wires go?

Thanks in advance for all help!

This is something I'm extremely curious about. Has anyone ever attempted to buy a quad (or any other vehicle) from an impound lot? I've always wondered if this could be a bargain, or a waste of time. Google searches do turn up some helpful results. Looks like the state of NJ holds auctions online which I'd be a bit hesitant about.

My online searches haven't really turned up any results of anyone buying an ATV this way. I'd be really curious if anyone tried this, or knows someone who has. I've actually found a couple pages with online auctions for my state, but none had ATVs.

Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.

If you had to choose one mod that you couldn't live without, or had to recommend one what would it be?

Hi everyone, I received a 98 Yamaha Timberwolf from my brother for free, and I'm working on getting it going.
I am having the following problem:
The engine is backfiring through the carb.
I have done the following to try and get the four wheeler running:
Rebuilt the carb and set the air screw to 1-1/4 turn out and the circlip at middle position 3
Replaced the coil, because the cable was loose at the coil end
Repaired the main ground, coming from the battery
Replaced the ignition switch, because my brother couldn't find the key. New switch tested good
Tested the kill switch and it tested good
New coil tested goodfor both primary and secondary coils
Pickup coil resistance is at 195, which is correct
My source coil, is where I believe the issue is. The resistance is 310ohms, and it should be between 428-523ohms
When I opened the stator housing, there was significant oil, which I have read is normal. Does it sound like I'm on the right track replacing the source coil? Could this be causing my backfiring issue? It looks like the source coil is part of the stator assembly, is this correct? 4BD-85510-20-00 STATOR ASSY
