Hello, I am hoping to get some input from someone who knows the Wisconsin ATV laws/routes. In Wisconsin, you are allowed to ride on roads if they are a designated ATV route. In my county, that is pretty much every road in my area with the exception of the state highways.

Now where I find it confusing is this... Many villages/towns have their own ATV ordinances. State highways appear to be always off limits except to cross??? Federal highways cannot be crossed??? Then there are trails. In my area, the Gandy Dancer trail is for ATV use, but only on some parts... etc.

I would love to find a path along roads to get to atv trails, that are about 10-15 miles away, but I am struggling to understand the mix of rules of where I am allowed to ride.

Anyway, I am looking for any resources (paper maps, apps, websites, etc) that might have a map of roadways and trails in Wisconsin and maybe a color coded key of whether you can ride there.

Thanks!

I joined the Wisconsin ATV Club for those very same reasons. They have a very good set(s) of maps of almost all trails in Wisconsin.

https://www.watva.org

They have a load of functions, trail rides, get-togethers, etc. Trail riding info, maps, news, etc.

Good luck, hope this helps.

The Gandy Dancer trail is open for ATV use in MN and you can get on the trail in Danbury. The WI Burnett Co. portion is not during the spring, summer and fall. In winter it is open to snowmobile and ATV.

As Dave S. suggested joining a club is a great way to gather information as you mentioned it varies by county, township and city.

I live in Price County in Northern WI. Most of the counties around me ( including Price ) have extensive trails for Snowmobiles, Atv's and Utv's. Info is available on all the county websites and maps can be picked up all over. Trails are much safer than streets and roads and some are very scenic. Good Luck !!

Just wanted to drop a post to say hello. My name is Nick. I am from the Shenandoah Valley. Rockingham Va to be more specific. I am constantly working on junk or items i pick up from auction, mostly atvs but really about everything. My ATV knowledge is vast but find myself needing assistance regularly.

My name is Marty, I'm 36, married with 3 kids. I work as a Robot and Controls Software Engineer in the automation industry with a lot of mechanical and electrical background. I have 2 Suzuki LT230s, one is a 1985 230 Shaft, the other is a 1987 230 quadrunner. The shaft has been amazing since the day i bought it about 5 years ago. The quadrunner was picked up as a project, it had a previous electrical fire due to improper splicing by previous owner, It has a wiseco high comp piston in it and all the gaskets have been redone. Im currently crafting replacement wires for a new harness im building for it. I gave the 230 shaft to my 12 year old daughter and she loves it, it is such a great and reliable machine. Im currently looking for a repair manual so that she can learn how to do her own maintenance.
I also built a 79cc predator powered quad for my 7 year old daughter from a blown up Temu quad i got for cheap.
I look forward to meeting some of you and learning some along the way!
