Thanks for that info. I have been turning wrenches on cars and bikes for over 30 years. The first thought when I saw the adjuster was that crack had made its way to Japanese engineers. I need to figure out why after using the brakes it stays tight. I must have put something together wrong. it did not do it until I installed new brake shoes.
The adjusters are different left and right. Do you have the Clymer manual?

Brought my boys vintage KQs but neglected to charge the batteries after they sat in the cold the last 4 months. Some sad faces until I let them take a spin on this. Then my face got sad watching them tear off. Oh, the agony of parenthood...

The rear axles on these are not CV joints. They are U-joints. Cut the band's off the boot and slide it off to inspect.

Yes, welcome to the early Suzuki drum brake engineering marvel. I could write a Sam Kinison skit about it.
Sounds like a stuck adjuster. I can't remember if there is an access hole to get at it. I'll look through my pics tomorrow. Here's a thread I posted about the system:

Went for a little shake down ride today. Bit of a gear rattle shifting into gear. Got my service manual yesterday will investigate.

Damm, -13 in Illinois? 28F here in Anchorage. Makes me feel tropical in comparison.

Great links. Thanks Ox. I didnt see any either but did learn some new things.
I hoping we are snow free trough the weekend so I can take it for a shake down. Then change fluids and filters.

nice !!
i will look for a manual for you, did a quick look and nothing as of yet ...
I found one on ebay. Shipping in on disk so I will share it when I get it.
So, reading the user manual, it mentions in 4WD using either the front or rear brakes alone will break all 4 wheels. There is a caution about it while riding up and down hills because the downhill brakes will be actuated. Is this true? seems like a goofy way to design the system.

Pull the vacuum tubes off these ports on you carb and check for fuel in them. If able, let idle a few minutes first.

The Craigslist post said "needs some TLC"

That's because he thinks its his. This is his:

I'm not familiar with your machine, but could be a fuel issue.
1. Check that your fuel tank vent is not clogged.
2. Check if the choke is stuck.
3. Disconnect the vacuum suck line from the carb to the fuel tank valve and select to reserve. This is to check if the carb is sucking in fuel from the valve simulating a choked condition.

Thanks.
BTW, my boy in the pic doesn't have a birth mark on his face. Seahawks logo tattoo. GO HAWKS!, but I digress...

Hi my name is Tim from Eagle River, Alaska.
(Hi Tim)
Its been 5 days since I've rode my Suzuki King Quad.
(Get out and ride brother!)

The forum website is clunky on my BlackBerry Z10. Is there a mobile site or an app like tapatalk that can be used?
-
Just bought it. Got a couple hundred off.
Need to find a manual and give it a health check.
-
Check the plug too, but like ox says, most likely the carb needs to be cleaned or rebuilt.
-
Thanks, going to check it out Sunday. Do you think the $4400 USD is a fair price?

Here is what I'm looking at:

I am thinking about buying a 2009 King Quad 450 LT-A450X. I hunt, fish, ride, plow in Alaska. Need to pass my 93 KQ down to a boy and want to upgrade. Just wondering what the members thing about this rig?
-
Yes, probably is an electrical problem with your idle, but curious what type of fuel tank valve you have. Straight (on, off, res) or vacuum operated (on, pri, and res)
-
Does it idle differently when you turn the handle bars?

You can download the manual from the sticky thread in this section. 2nd item on the list. I'm an airplane mechanic and am all about RTFM.
Good news on the brakes. Yeah, front drum brake system, what a joke. I assume you made sure the pistons are not seized. If one of the adjusters doesn't lock, then the shoes will go full limp every time. That side will use all the hydraulic volume and will not actuate the other side. Use DOT4 fluid and lastly, bleed the snot out of it.
