No spark, continued

So, on my 84 TRX200, I've replaced everything except the stator and regulator. New coil, cdi unit, (spark pickup tests good) new sparkplug. No spark. Ohm tested stator on the bench. Book said 0.1 - 1 ohm. I have 3 - 4 ohms. Bad?

Wiring had been boogered up when we got it. (Key switch bypass) Not sure if related but wiring diagram shows a blue and yellow wire from CDI to the spark pick-up (pulse generator) Not sure what was hooked up there, but CDI unit plug didn't look like a blue and yellow wire was EVER plugged in there. It has one now ;)

I had it running for a few seconds, and then it quit. Been searching for spark ever since.

Help. TIA, Scott!

I had unreliable spark on a honda cr250 dirtbike (i think the stator might be it but i'm not too sure) (sometimes the spark would be bright and then nothing for 2 kickstarts) very sporadic and dissapearing spark

I put a new (to me) stator in. Still nothing. Went so far as buying another wire harness. Still, nothing. Spark generator tests good, but it's the only thing I haven't replaced. I have a new one enroute.

You know the electrical wiring plugs/plug ins attached to all the dfferent rnadom bunch of wires (the ones i have seen look like a copper tube covered in soft bendy plastic plugs that are at the ends of the wires?

Maybe one of them has corrosion or a loose connection and things only work if the bike wiggled a certain way or something

Oh i forgot you typed that you ordered a new wiring harness. So that should means the wires should be in new condition so no corrosion / maybe one of them is loose but probably not // tomorrow i will hear the results from my dad about the cr250 honda dirtbike strange spark plug behavior and maybe it will be some sort of clue// it is stator/cdi box/ wiring harness sort of problem too

No, really. It's is the only thing left. 🤣😂🤣 New wiring harness, new CDI unit, new coil, new plug.

To be honest, it's a used item but intact. The one we replaced had splices on splices. It was a mess when we first got it

i had to take the day off work so i will find out the results on Tuesday about the Honda cr250 dirt bike //Coil/stator/wiring harness/ cdi box        the problem is sporadic spark plug behavior ( we turned off all the lights in the garage so it was very dark) he kicked the kick starter about six times and i observed the sparks from the spark plugs.

1st time - low ish medium spark

2nd time - no spark

3rd time - no spark

4rth time - very faint spark

5th time - big medium big bright spark

6th time - very faint spark

The customer guy gave my dad two different CDI boxes and some other stuff (we tried a whole bunch of things and cannot figure it out). We are guessing both CDI boxes are bad so the Honda cr250 owner guy tracked down a 3rd CDI box// the whole situation is confusing

Posted

So the guy ordered in 4 or 5 new replacement electrical parts. I think it is new CDI box, new coil, new stator, wiring harness and maybe something else too

( previously we tried everything and could not figure it out but then 'guess hypothesized that both CDI boxes the guy gave us were fucky)    //     We have no idea what is wrong (dad says maybe some switch inside of both of the CDI boxes the guy gave us is fucky)

I don't know the status of the weird spark plug behavior because my dad said something about the fly-wheel and he had to order in some special part in do do something with it.

      1989 Moto 4 YFM350ERW intermittent spark.
Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark.

What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual.
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.
As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.

Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.

Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
