Weak & intermittent spark on 91 Moto 4 250

My grandson and I are trying to resurrect a 91 Moto 4 250 that we got as a basket case a while back, and are having trouble getting a consistent spark out of the ignition system. We've been able to get it to cough and pop a few times, but can't get it to start up and run. When we pull the spark plug out and hold it against the cylinder while cranking it seems to get a few bright sparks, and then they just get weaker and weaker. We've gone through the troubleshooting steps in the manual, and the ignition coil resistances checked ok ( it had a new coil on it when we got it, appears to be an aftermarket one ). The main switch, and the engine stop switch checked ok, so we moved on to the magneto and the source coil, and pickup coil resistances were both within limits. So we ordered a new CDI box off Amazon ( unfortunately the only things we can find are cheap chinese knock offs ), but that didn't seem to make any difference either.

But just to give a little more background on this machine, it seems to have been at least partially submerged and not cleaned at some point in it's life. And the guy we got it from had  left the spark plug out so the piston was rusted into the cylinder wall. It now has a new cylinder, piston & rings, and we looked everything over and cleaned it up.

Back to the magneto, I decided to pull the stator and check it and the magneto rotor for any damage or crud, and that's when I found something that struck me as a bit odd. They seem to be inside the oil bath of the crankcase with the pickup coil and the lower part of the stator sitting in the oil, when I separated the spacer that holds the stator from the crankcase, it drained the oil from the engine. Does anyone know, is that normal?  I've been an aircraft mechanic for 40 years and anytime there was oil getting in to the magneto's on an aircraft engine it was time to overhaul them.

I've worked on CDI motorcycle ignitions ( albeit many moons ago! ) but they were all 2 strokers, and this one's got me pulling out what little hair I have left!  My grandson has a Timberwolf that's fairly close in year to this one, we think, but of course none of the plugs on the CDI (or anything else) match so it's had to swap parts for troubleshooting.  Any ideas anyone have would be appreciated

Wanted to post a follow up to this since we finally found the culprit and got the old beast running.  It turns out everything was good with the magneto, so we put it all back together and went through all the wiring and switches again just to make sure and everything checked good per the wiring diagrams and the manual. Still no spark! Tried several different spark plugs, nothing. The guy we got it from had replaced the ignition coil with an aftermarket "racing" coil and the resistances checked "close enough for government work", but luckily the original coil was in one of the misc. parts boxes that we got with it. The spark plug connector on it was broken but we were able to take the one off the "new" coil and use it on the original one, and after cleaning off all the rust and crud on the mounting contacts, it tested perfectly within specs so we bolted it on and hooked it up and nice big fat sparks!

So I guess the moral of the story is never throw anything away!

So I have an 89 Yamaha moto 4 250cc and when I ride it, itll get hot after like 10-15 mins and then will just die and turn off.
It's has new carb rebuild, new air filter, new battery, new spark plug so I don't think it's a crack in the spark plug
      Can anyone help me?

Starting this build thread to keep up with everything on my build and hope to motivate someone!

I picked up this 2008 Yamaha Big Bear 250 2 weeks ago. A guy that I hunt with parked it at the hunt club for a year or so before I asked him if he wanted to sell. He said " fill my feeder and throw some batteries in my cameras, and you can have it". Sounds like a deal to me!
I have attached some pictures of how it sat under a tarp in the woods and when I got it home and cleaned up a little.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.
