I'm having an issue shifting into 1st gear from neutral. No problem shifting into any other gear including reverse. When I depress the foot pedal it doesn't go into 1st gear. After repeatedly pressing it sometimes it will go into 1st gear, other times I have to rock the machine slightly and then it will go into 1st gear. I took the right side cover off and removed the clutches to get a better look. I've taken all the parts of the shifting mechanism off thinking I would find a worn part but everything looks fine. When I watch the shifting action from neutral to 1st gear, the part that engages the shift star (drum) is pushing on the peg that is connected to the shift star but it can't push it far enough down to get it out of neutral before it bottoms out. What am I missing? Is the issue actually inside the transmission?

Thanks for any and all help.

Hi, do you still need help with your Bayou 300?  I have the identical machine, 2x4 tough shaft driven ATV love it.  I have the paper service manual, which you can also download here if you have 10 posts.

Have you checked the clutch adjustment bolt near the oil sight gauge?  Can help with the shifting.  Also how about the reverse lockout knob?  Might have something to do with the reverse-neutral-1st gear shifting.

About your machine, what's the history, was working fine before, is it running currently?  At risk of being obvious, it is hard to shift at a stand still, best if it is running and moving.  I can check my shop manual for shift adjustment procedures.

Just some ideas, let me know if I can further assist.

Thanks for replying.  I ended up putting it all back together.  I think it's in the bottom end and I'll just live with it for now. I have the service manual and did the clutch adjustment procedure and checked the reverse lockout.  The machine has done this since I've owned it.  My father purchased it used back in the 80's.  He gave it to me and purchased a new one about 15 years ago.  Finally had some time to look at it.  Shifts fine while moving.  The issue is from a stand still only.

You're welcome Steve.  I have the official 1986 Kawasaki manual if that makes any difference, has lots of photographs of checks for the shift mechanism, haven't seen the one on here yet so can't comment on what is in it.  I looked in my own manual perhaps you could rotate the shift star gear, so the 1st gear peg is maybe at the 5th gear position?  Or the shift drum is worn, which as you say is in the bottom end.  I imagine the shift foot lever is not hitting the footpeg lol.......:o)  Sorry I couldn't be more help, glad it's working for you after a fashion at least.  I've had my 300 Bayou since my Dad bought it new in '86, first machine I learned to drive, fun pretty and easy to work on.  Cheers Steve!~  Bellarmine

Howdy ya'll. I am working ona 2000 Yamaha Breeze 125. It was in rought shape when I received it and I am working through issues as they pop up. The quad had been sitting for years. I was able to get her running again, but I need your help with the following issue:
I don't trust the transmission yet and I don't want to make problems any worse. So, I haven't pushed things hard at all. Low rpms, less than 5mph in reverse.

      Nuetral: Runs as expected
Reverse: She seems to be driving fine at slow speeds. Going into reverse at idle is fine, coming out of reverse back into neutral won't work (the shifter is just stuck). As soon as I turn off the quad, I am able to shift around without any issue.
Forward: It slips. It seems to only transfer power to the wheels on a smooth surface and going slightly downhill. When shifting into forward at idle, there is a clacking sounds during the transition. Shifting back to nuetral works just fine.

Other Notable Symptoms: There was old oil in the vbelt and when I was tuning the carb, it starting blowing out of the CVT cooling vent at the front of the quad. Made quite a mess. There is positive crankcase pressure due to piston blowby, that I have not decided whether or not I am going to fix (customer budget dependant).  Since the oil was old, much darker than the new oil that is in the crankcase, I am thinking it seeped past a bad seal while it was sitting for years. The oil that was in it when I first got it had gas in it.

Thoughts: I am thinking maybe there is an issue with the clutch. I worry about the old oil intermingling with the dry centrifugal clutch. I was thinking my next step would be to take the cover off of the clutch and inspect it.

Let me know what you all think. Any advice and ideas is greatly appreciated. This is only the 3rd quad I have worked on and I have a lot to learn.

Hi all. I have a timberwolf 250 2nd that will not start.. I thought it was out of time bc the guy I got it from said it just quit on him. The tensioner had a nut welded to it and it was like2 teeth off. I installed new tensioner and chain and it still will not start. It has fire and it will not hit off brake cleaner. It has compression. Haven't put a gauge but I'm sure it will crank and run with what it has. I double checked my work and it's still in time. Spot on. Both valves move. I'm about to put a feeler gauge on them and I'll cone back but other than that any ideas?

      Hello
My son scored a free Moto4 - late 80s from the looks of it. I don't know anything else about its history as the owner wasn't there when i picked it up. Can't see the VIN number as its a bit rusty.  He cleaned the carb and then with some either it started and still starts first pull.  Its runs really nice - not rattles etc.  Goes forwards well and the brakes work fine so it looks like a keeper, However, we have only managed to get it into reverse once.
      1) it won't shift down into what seems like where first would be - 2nd and upwards only. The changes between gears is fine.  No crunching or missed gears - just no first gear.  2nd gears appears to be as low as it will go
      2) the clutch - when you hold the gear lever up or down works (only the second ATV we have had.  Other is a Quadrunner which doesn't have this feature)
      3) no neutral light - will start when no in neutral - should it do that?
      4) the one time we did get it into reverse the neutral and then the red (reverse) lights worked. Swapped easy between forward and reverse - when it went into second, it didn't return to first or neutral
      5) checked the clutch adjust on the RHS - seemed fine to me.  When i turned the screw back 1/8 it was where it was to start with.  Clutch doesn't slip.  The bike will move forward is all gears.

      Any help would be appreciated

      Thanks

on my honda trx 500 we have no power to the ignition switch for starting or ignition
we have lights and horn working
      all fuses are fine
have traced through the harness and cant find any broken wires or bad connections
from what we have gathered so far the pgm fi unit is not sending any power to the fuel pump relay to power everything up.
if we put power direct to the ignition switch plug then everything works but wth the key in the off position.
does this sound like a faulty pgm fi unit?

This 2006 ArticCat dvx400 didn't have a reverse cable. I got one and am wondering how it routes? If someone has a dvx400, could post a pic of there reverse cable routing, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
