1995 Polaris Magnum 425 4x4 no spark

The short answer is that spring inside of the red on/off slide switch on the handle bar switch was rusted out and broken.  Below is the more detailed version.

My neighbor gave me this quad that has been sitting outside abandoned on her property for 5+ years.  We're in Casper so it's been getting rained and snowed on all of this time.  I pulled it apart and the plug was not sparking.  There is a great Youtube video that goes over how to test the exciter, stator, and pick up coil and I checked the continuity on all 3 and they were not grounded out.  The last thing he checked was the kill switch and I ended up having the same problem the guy had in the video but he didn't go into how to fix it.  This is how I fix mine.

I took the left handle bar switch off and removed the little plastic and metal covers inside that hold the red on/off button in place. There are 2 wires for that, a black one and a brown one.  I use a volt meter to verify that the wires were not severed between the contact points inside the handle bar switch and the end of wire and all were good.  Then I noticed that the little copper U shaped clip on the red button was sitting at an odd angle and not springy so I took that apart to clean it and see why.  I guess all of the years of sitting outside rusted out that spring and it broke in two.  That was preventing the copper U shaped piece from touching the contact points.  I reassembled and reinstalled the switch and we're sparking good now.

Hope that may be of help to someone.

My friends KQ 300 starts fine and runs, as soon as you put it in gear and try to accelerate its bucks and farts like crazy, not moving... I cleaned carb and it worked good for 1 day... now back to same problem.... could it be such as a bent valve????

Bucking started about a month ago and works ok after 1/2 hour warmup.  Today while working on it i discovered that if i put the ignition switch in LIGHT position it runs fine right from the start.
I'm stumped!  Any idea why this could be?

This is something I'm extremely curious about. Has anyone ever attempted to buy a quad (or any other vehicle) from an impound lot? I've always wondered if this could be a bargain, or a waste of time. Google searches do turn up some helpful results. Looks like the state of NJ holds auctions online which I'd be a bit hesitant about.

My online searches haven't really turned up any results of anyone buying an ATV this way. I'd be really curious if anyone tried this, or knows someone who has. I've actually found a couple pages with online auctions for my state, but none had ATVs.

Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.
