Hello Folks

Have a Kawasaki Bayou 220, called the KLF 220 in my neck of the woods. I have had some fun getting to run nicely and eventually found a chap who sorted it all out for me. Something about 80-year-old bike specialists that make all the difference.

Anyrate now that she is running, I want to clean up or replace the spring suspension. so to my questions -

[1] has anyone changed/upgraded the spring suspension? if yes to what?

[2] The thought crossed my mind to split the spring system and change the actual springs for something firmer and give them some love while at it.. Has anyone split apart the springs, if so how does one go about separating the springs from the shafts?

Comments appreciated.

Hello from New Zealand.

You don't say which year but I think to get the springs off the shocks you use a C spanner to lower the spring pressure as much as possible using the adjuster at the bottom of the spring, then there will be some sort of two piece collet, or a C shaped retainer, that will come out at the top of the spring, then the spring will pull off upwards. If un-adjusting the spring at the bottom doesn't give enough room to get the collet/retainer out you may need to use a spring compressor to compress the spring slightly.

Mech Thanks for the reply.

BTW, have lots of family in your neck of the woods :)

C spanner (had to google it) more tools ... love it. Seems simple enough.

The Quad is a '98 if that helps. I don't think there are any adjustments to increase spring tension. None of that makes sense to me at any rate. Getting springs off is one thing, finding something for the rear that is somewhat more robust will be interesting.

You don't really have to have a C spanner, a pair of channel lock pliers will do it if you are careful.

The parts diagram I looked at showed shocks with adjusters.. Can you post a photo of the shock ?

I just bought a 1984 Suzuki LT185 ATV and am looking for the OWNER’S manual. ( not a service manual)
I contacted Suzuki Canada but they have no paper or digital copies in their archives.
Does anyone possibly have a digital copy they’d be willing to share?

      Good day everyone!
I am pretty new to ATV/UTV/Small engine repairs and would like input on your absolute must-have specialty tools for maintenance and repairs. Aside from the obvious wrenches and sockets, what are some more specialty type tools you use for troubleshooting? I don't plan to open a repair shop or anything, I just do this as a hobby. Looking forward to your responses!

Good morning, checking in from Southern Ontario, I have 3 quads. 201 Honda Forman 450S, 2007 Suzuki King quad 450 and a 2021 Polaris 570 sportsman. My wife and I do a fair amount of riding but hoping to do more this year.
