Will not shift

I have a Big Bear ATV that will not shift into neutral for starting. Can someone explain to me what I should be looking for when I remove the side cover that's behind the shifter please.

I'm not sure of the year of the quad. It is a big Bear 400

Well tell us what sort of transmission it has then.. Two speed hand shift or five speed foot shift.

If the engine is running will it shift to neutral ? Will it start in gear if you apply the front brake ?

And have you been rocking the bike back and forwards as you try to get it out of gear ?

It has a five speed foot shifter

And are you going to tell the the answer to my other questions or am I meant to guess.. 

And if you had the vIn number off the bike you could find what model it is. They have a suffix to the model that tells us what service manual you need. That would help.

If its a 400 it will be 2000 or newer. All Big Bears are foot shift and most are full time 4 wheel drive.

When you take the side cover next to the shifter you should see stator in the case, on the engine the flywheel and pickup coil along with the shifter mechanism, hopefully its in better shape than mine was, although i wasnt having shifter problems. It had just sat with water in it for a while.

Check to make sure the shift drum is rotating freely and the spring is attached and doing its job.
