Will not go into 1st but if ya go past will go into maybe next gear. Will not shift into reverse. I have see others say that the shift cam assembly dowel worn or fall out. How do I get to this? Do I need to break case in half?

thanks for your help

I took off the recoil side and the shift fork for forward and reverse works as it should. I am not sure which side the shifter cam is under. I see the case does split in half but there has to be an more easy way to see cam.

Thanks

If you go to Babbits spares they have pretty good exploded diagrams of all the parts, or a service manual will have much the same exploded view diagrams..

If the shifters are moving nicely but it's not engaging gear, it might be time to inspect the oil for metal chunks ?

Have you ridden the bike recently ? Did it get into low gear then ? It might have blown low gear, and that other gear you say it will go into might(presumably) be second.. ?

Its on the clutch side just below the primary clutch. You should see it move when you push down the shift lever, check to make sure the bolt is in tight that holds it together and that all the pins are in place, and it hasnt jumped out of position.

If a pin has dropped out or broken(never happens) from the shift barrel, then it wouldn't go into the next gear up. The ratchet wouldn't move the barrel far enough to engage the next pin around. If the ratchet/self centering mechanism between the shift lever and the shift barrel was damaged I don't think it would move up into the second gear.

If the original description in post#1 is right, it's blown a cog..  I'd try some more tests to confirm it, and/or check the oil for metal.

Howdy ya'll. I am working ona 2000 Yamaha Breeze 125. It was in rought shape when I received it and I am working through issues as they pop up. The quad had been sitting for years. I was able to get her running again, but I need your help with the following issue:
I don't trust the transmission yet and I don't want to make problems any worse. So, I haven't pushed things hard at all. Low rpms, less than 5mph in reverse.

      Nuetral: Runs as expected
Reverse: She seems to be driving fine at slow speeds. Going into reverse at idle is fine, coming out of reverse back into neutral won't work (the shifter is just stuck). As soon as I turn off the quad, I am able to shift around without any issue.
Forward: It slips. It seems to only transfer power to the wheels on a smooth surface and going slightly downhill. When shifting into forward at idle, there is a clacking sounds during the transition. Shifting back to nuetral works just fine.

Other Notable Symptoms: There was old oil in the vbelt and when I was tuning the carb, it starting blowing out of the CVT cooling vent at the front of the quad. Made quite a mess. There is positive crankcase pressure due to piston blowby, that I have not decided whether or not I am going to fix (customer budget dependant).  Since the oil was old, much darker than the new oil that is in the crankcase, I am thinking it seeped past a bad seal while it was sitting for years. The oil that was in it when I first got it had gas in it.

Thoughts: I am thinking maybe there is an issue with the clutch. I worry about the old oil intermingling with the dry centrifugal clutch. I was thinking my next step would be to take the cover off of the clutch and inspect it.

Let me know what you all think. Any advice and ideas is greatly appreciated. This is only the 3rd quad I have worked on and I have a lot to learn.

I'm working on a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 400 with shift indicator problems. The indicator panel only will show Neutral and Reverse. If it's in High or Low, the indicator will show "R".
I have replaced the three position indicator switch on the transmission. There is also a two position switch on the tranny that I didn't replace. If anyone is familiar with this problem, please let me know what I need to do. Any help is greatly appreciated!

This 2006 ArticCat dvx400 didn't have a reverse cable. I got one and am wondering how it routes? If someone has a dvx400, could post a pic of there reverse cable routing, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I got a 2005 350 Raptor Special Edition and I'm dealing with a no start issue; the weirdest thing is when I'm cranking it fires and slows down showing signs of pre firing, smoke shoots out the carburetor every time it sparks. every electrical part (CDI, Rectifier, Stator, Coil) has been swapped out from previous owner, the top end of the engines all new and I cleaned the carb out, anyone got any ideas or similar problems, also is it possible to have a bad spark timing
