That sucks, will it not just run on prime? I think the only bad thing about prime, is the gas doesn't shut off when the engine does. Could treat 'on' like 'off', and 'pri' like 'on'.

Hey, this is just an FYI post. After getting my quadrunner going again (voltage regulator issue in other posts), it ran well, but a couple of times I had trouble getting it started. I suspected the fuel petcock because I was shutting the fuel off when I wasn't using it, and I knew the filter/stems in the tank were looking rough last time I shone a flashlight into an empty tank. So I went on amazon.ca and bought the cheapest petcock I could find, like $13.99. But when it arrived, I realized it was different than the original. It had on/res/pri as the level selections, and along with fuel out, had a connection for (I discovered) vacuum in. Wheras the original petcock only had on/off/res and just fuel out. So I read up on it, sounded cool, the vacuum connection means that you just leave the lever set to on, and it automatically cuts fuel when the engine is off. So I found a splitter, and I split vacuum off my fuel pump to the new pet cock, and it seems to work well. I'm not sure if I've made a mistake here, but I like the idea of an automatic fuel shutoff, and if there's an issue, I can just set it to Pri, and it bypasses the vacuum shut off and just allows fuel to drain through the lower Res stem. Only thing was setting the lever to Res, I expected it to work the same as On, but fuel coming from the lower Res stem, but it doesn't seem to allow fuel at all, but not a big deal since Pri will serve that purpose.

One of my favorite things to do on this in the old days (it was my grampa's bike) was put it down in super-low, diff-lock and just walk through a deep mud hole. About the fan, I was literally just gonna say, I mostly will only use it in the winter so I'm not worried about over-heating, but you have me intrigued now about blowing warm air on myself...that is definitely a selling point Glad to hear the endorsement of the machine, I'm hoping I can get a decent number of years out of it still, I don't need an ATV bad enough to buy another one, so as long as I can keep this one going, I get to have an ATV

I mean....it's a 30 year old ATV that I got for free.....I didn't get a higher amp regulator, I just got a cheap Chinese one off Amazon. If it fails again, I'll look into it more, but I already replaced the carb, the coil, cap, plug, CDI....If there is a charging issue, I might not have it in me to go that deep, won't know till it happens. But this wasn't meant to be perfection, just needed it to run reliably enough to get to the camp in November, which I'm pretty sure I've accomplished. So, I'm sure this will come as no surprise to Randy, but he was correct. I got a new voltage regulator and replaced it this afternoon, and it seems to have resolved all the issues. Thanks again

Thanks Randy. The CDI I had already ordered arrived, and it seemed to help, and then didn't....where is the voltage regulator on these bikes?

Hey all, I've been working on getting up enough posts to download the service manual, but in the mean time, maybe someone is interested if giving me a few deets in a reply? If not, no worries. I'm look to confirm a couple things that I've picked up from Google searches. First, I've heard that the factory mixture setting on the carb for this bike is 2 full turns out. Can people confirm? I've also heard that it's a fuel mix valve, not air, so screw in to lean, out to richen? Is that correct? And for the valve clearances, I've heard two different specs, one is intake 0.004" and exhaust 0.006", and that other I heard from a youtuber who claimed this bike had 'very tight' valve clearances, said 0.002" intake, and 0.004" exhaust. If anyone wants to comment on the above, I would be appreciative, if not though I'll keep posting until I can download that service manual

Still waiting on my CDI, but I will definitely recheck my valve clearances, thank you. The carb is brand new, I did mess with the mixture though before discovering the spark plug cap was bad, and have been trying to get that right since replacing the cap, but I can't even get a starting point to work from, as in I have to hold some throttle to keep it running, so I'm struggling to adjust to mixture at the same time. It also doesn't run right with throttle, it misses I think so the power is jittery. The fuel pump is also new, but even if I prime it by blowing in the gas tank breather tube, it doesn't help. I just hope it's not a charging issue.

So my old quadrunner gave up on me a couple years back. Would run for 20 minutes, and then would die when you let off throttle and wouldn't start again till it was cold. Should also be noted that at that point, I was having to crank up the idle adjustment screw to keep it running. So at that time, I had given the carb a partial tear down, looked clean, tinkered around trying to narrow down what was wrong, and eventually got a compression testing tool and diagnosed bad compression, significantly under spec, but still over 100psi. So I took it to a mechanic who said the cylinder was bad and to get another engine, wasn't interested in me trying to find another cylinder for him. So I took it back and decided to take the engine apart myself after watching a bunch of youtube videos as reference. I found the cylinder, piston and rings were all fine, but the valves where fouled and obviously causing my compression issue, so I cleaned and lapped them and I was up to 150psi. Now the thing seemed to run a lot better, but still won't idle. So I took the carb apart again, found the o-ring for the mixture valve was disintegrated, and one of the jets was stuck and couldn't be removed, so I just ordered a new carb from amazon. Put it on, and now I was able to get it to idle like normal (without cranking the idle screw) but only for short times, and then I'd give it throttle and it would bog. So I went at the electronics. Couldn't get an ohm reading through the spark plug cap, so I replaced it, coil seemed ok but replaced it anyways because it was cheap, still can't get it to idle and run right. So I'm thinking it's the CDI. Now, I found a few search results for the correct CDI (as per suzuki parts house), but they were all expensive, like $200+. But there was another one, slightly different part number (only the last two digits where incremented by 10) and it looks exactly the same, same connectors, which I determined was meant for the Kingquad 300 and it was only $43. So I posted on another forum asking if anyone could confirm if they were compatible, and a guy said he has both a quadrunner 250 and a kingquad 300 and he interchanges their electronics for testing and they work fine. So I ordered one, and am waiting for it now to see if it solves my problems and finally gets this old girl usable again. If anyone has any thoughts or insights, feel free to pass them along

I bought one of these Ratchet Wrench, Mini 36 Teeth 1/4in Drill Bit Socket Ratchet Wrench Screwdriver Sleeve Spanner Car Hand Tools(Orange), Socket Wrenches - Amazon Canada and I still had to grind half the hex shaft off a slotted bit before it would fit under the carb on my quadrunner. And then turned out there wasn't enough room sideways to swing the ratchet! So I have to stick my fingers in there and spin the teeth....
