Sounds familiar.

Scored myself a 1991 Moto 4 YFM250 .... not to get it to run. Doesn't spark, previous owner thinks it is the stator, i'm not convinced, I reckon it is the Ignition coil.

Now the fun begins.

Hello I'm new to the forum I'm Orv538 just here to learn new stuff from you and to show some of the stuff I have going on in my little humble home,as a kid I grew up with nothing, and now a bit older I've become a handyman in just about every trade, and now I've been given some quads, they're Chinese but just a start,I'm making modifications to them,so I have my welder, grinders, compressor,my auto spray gun, multimeter etc..little by little I will share pics.... (07 Panther Hd2 110cc,⬅️ this will get a 125cc big bore)(05 Kazuma Falcon 150cc gy6 F/N/R engine)(2000 Eton txl impulse 50cc gonna do a big bore kit on the Eton to 71cc or 80cc probably....) any help counts... thanks!!!

Most likely the stator coil.  Easy to test that though.

thats  a great bike.

What condition is the bike in ?

Condition pretty good over all. Frame and suspension suggests it has not done al ot of work but won't give spark. Wiring harness seems to check out.

I ran a multi-meter over the stator coil. All three phases came back with the same resistance (1.2 ohms) and there didn't seem to be any shorting to ground. From what I have seen online this suggests the stator coil is all ok?

Starter solenoid is pretty corroded and shot I think but the 'neutral' switch wire was disconnected and looking at the wiring diagram I think the starter solenoid will not function unless there is power from the neutral switch (?). Starter motor spins over when connected to battery directly but doesn't sound like it is "engaging" as the engine doesn't turn over...need to check out what is going on there but if I can get it to pull start then atleast that is a starting point (no pun intended)

I think the ignition coil is busted though as resistance on the ignition coil seemed through the roof so this seemed like a logical issue to me but I am no mechanic or auto electrician so happy to be proved incorrect.

I have not yet checked out the Regulator or starter circuit relay and I believe it is not possible to test the CDI?

Am I on the right track????

Cheers.

Yes you are on the right track.   The neutral safety switch will lock out the starter relay but you can jump it out and test the circuit that way.  As far as the relay goes I would replace it if it’s corroded.  I would have guessed that the stator was bad for sure.  The cdi is a tough and expensive call to make.  Can’t test it.  Caltrec makes a replacement one cheap enough but they don’t work so well.

Yeh the Starter motor solenoid looks pretty crappy (photo attached).

With jumping the starter relay, I assume it is just a matter of crossing the 'in' and 'out' wires, for the lack of a better term... e.g. not the neutral or brake safety switch wires ?

I am located in Australia, so finding some parts is a pain in the butt. However I was thinking of buying the following starter solenoid;

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AFTERMARKET-STARTER-SOLENOID-YAMAHA-YFM250-1989-to-1991/272348129240

and I came across this CDI but I am not sure on it...seems to cheap to me.

When you say the 'Caltrec' ones don't work so well, what are the issues? or just un-reliable?

Cheers, Brett

The neutral safety depends on the bike.   For instance on my Kawasaki I have two wires coming from my neutral safety switch. So one would naturally assume to splice them. That’s not the case. I had to take one of the wires from the harness and attach it to a ground in order to  bring in the starting circuit.

That relay looks banged up but a lot of the time they are ok.

As far as the cdi goes here’s my take. I have a Yamaha Bear tracker. Stator coil was bad. Replaced it and the bike was fine.  When I ordered that stator I ordered a cdi as well just to be safe.   It looked great and plugged right in but would not work.  It was the right one for the right bike. But no good.  I put the old one back and if fired right up.   I tried it again later the bike fired and shut down.  Put the old one back it fired right up.  It was like it worked some time.  I ordered one for my  fourtrax and it did the same thing.

Hi All,

I am restoring my 1984 Honda 200s. Looking for a Hondaline rear rack if anyone has one. Couple pics attached. It was in a collision years ago and I finally found a OEM front fender and triple tree so I am putting in new stem bearings and good to do. Not really a restore just keeping it in good shape. Also scored a OEM tail light as the original was cracked.

Just thought I'd start a new thread for newbies to the site!
If you're new here, tell us who you are, where you're from and what you ride!!!
Lets get to know each other a little better shall we?
I'm not new to the site, obviously, but...
I'm Kristin from Denver!!! I ride a 2008 Yamaha Rhino. She's my muddy baby!!!!!! Several aftermarket parts on her. She's good to me! We try and ride every weekend. This weekend we're off to MOAB! :woot:

Just some friendly advice on new tires. Check with your ATV dealer.
There are so many aftermarket sites, Revco, Royal Distributing, Partzilla, and on and on. Even with their “ big sales”, my local Canam dealer’s REGULAR price beat the tire prices of the 3rd party sellers! People often assume the Dealership will cost them more, but I found this not to be true!

      Hello
My son scored a free Moto4 - late 80s from the looks of it. I don't know anything else about its history as the owner wasn't there when i picked it up. Can't see the VIN number as its a bit rusty.  He cleaned the carb and then with some either it started and still starts first pull.  Its runs really nice - not rattles etc.  Goes forwards well and the brakes work fine so it looks like a keeper, However, we have only managed to get it into reverse once.
      1) it won't shift down into what seems like where first would be - 2nd and upwards only. The changes between gears is fine.  No crunching or missed gears - just no first gear.  2nd gears appears to be as low as it will go
      2) the clutch - when you hold the gear lever up or down works (only the second ATV we have had.  Other is a Quadrunner which doesn't have this feature)
      3) no neutral light - will start when no in neutral - should it do that?
      4) the one time we did get it into reverse the neutral and then the red (reverse) lights worked. Swapped easy between forward and reverse - when it went into second, it didn't return to first or neutral
      5) checked the clutch adjust on the RHS - seemed fine to me.  When i turned the screw back 1/8 it was where it was to start with.  Clutch doesn't slip.  The bike will move forward is all gears.

      Any help would be appreciated

      Thanks

      Andrew
