I have a 2000 Big Bear 400 4x2 that has been sitting since about 2005. It has been inside, so it still looks very good. Bike was low hours and ran great before it was parked. I plan to change the engine oil and filter, differential oil, battery, fuel lines, fuel filter, drain and clean the fuel tank and rebuild the carburetor before I even try to start it. Is there anything else I should do? I don't want to cause any damage before I even get the thing running again. Thanks.

i have a question for all the gurus on this site.....just about that very question....i too have a 4 wheeler that has set a while...i went thru it and checked and cleaned everything on it...started right up and idled fine, before i could even try any adjustments it died...did that 3 different times and final time locked the engine up!!!  it is a kawasaki bayou 220 dated 2000...

the question i have of the gurus is...is there a way to oil these from the top end, since they have been setting, and the oil surely has all drained out of top end and would that oil sufficiently to prevent issues once engine going??????

May be a silly question, but you did remember to put oil back in it, didn't you? I don't know if you can access the top end easily on that particular machine. Is there a way to manually turn the engine over without the starter to see how much resistance there is? I don't like using the starter because the torque they put out can break stuck rings.

That sounds strange. Hopefully one of the experts will be along shortly with a possible solution. Did it get hot at all while it was running? Have you checked to make sure the starter isn't stuck in the engaged position and keeping the engine from turning?

The engine won't be able to turn because the starter is locked up to the flywheel, preventing it from turning. If the flywheel can't turn, neither can the crankshaft.

not sure if starter sticking will lock engine...and no did not get hot...warm but not hot.

 

odd to have to add here...

so i have to pull the starter to see if free?

I'm not familiar with your machine, but you might. Something is preventing the engine from turning and I wouldn't think no longer than you ran it, it would be the crank. Then again I'm only a jakeleg redneck and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. [emoji16]

will try it and see...shop wants $80 just to see it!

I'd pull it to save $80. From what Google says, it's pretty straight forward, albeit a but tight to get to. You might wait to see if someone more qualified comes along in a bit.

For plastic tanks, I remove the tank, empty it out, and plug all but the filler hole. I then rinse it with hot soapy water the best I can and check it with a flashlight. If there is still buildup present, I put a little aquarium gravel and hot soapy water in the tank and shake it to agitate the gravel, which usually loosens anything stuck to the tank. Once I'm satisfied it's clean, I remove the soapy water and gravel and rinse with hot water. Let it dry and inspect with a flashlight for cleanliness and to make certain there isn't a pebble stuck somewhere. That's about it. You can use solvents and such, but I don't like to. Metal tanks can be cleaned in a similar fashion, but if you have rust it gets exponentially more complicated. There are many videos out there on cleaning and coating metal tanks. You can get about as elaborate with that as your patience can stand.

      Hi all.  New to the forum & quads.  Seems like a great place full of info.
      I just recently picked up a 2005 Suzuki KingQuad LTA700.  I need a battery.  I've been reading up on conventional vs AGM types.  I have a Royal Distributing and Canadian Tire.  RD has 2 types avail for my year/Model a battery YTX16-BS CRANK $75, and BATTERY YTX20CH-BS YUASA $140.  Neither of these is the type from the manual FTZ16-BS.
      from what I can tell... I think the only difference is the capacity with the $75 unit rated at 14 AH/10HR and the $140 unit rated at 18 AH/10HR ... which is the rating in the manual for the FTZ16-BS.  How much does this make a difference for nearly x2 the cost?
      And about the models/type numbers.... what is important to know ... they all end in "-BS" but are the other details relevant or just manufacturer naming?

      When I bought my atv.its missing the air filter.on the parts diagram.it shows the air filter cage separate.but in my air filter box.it looks like it has an air filter cage fastened to air filter box.do I need a air filter cage on top of piece in air box.

      Hey everyone,
      I’m having an issue with my 2021 Polaris Sportsman 570 – the engine keeps stalling after running for about 10–15 minutes. I’ve checked the air filter, spark plug, and fuel lines, but can’t seem to find the root of the problem. It starts up just fine, but then loses power suddenly.
      Has anyone experienced a similar issue with this model/year? Would appreciate any advice or troubleshooting tips you’ve tried that worked. Thanks in advance for your help!

      The battery on my Big Bear drops completely down in the battery compartment nothing sticks up to grip too, plus there is only 1/8" clearance along the sides, no way to get a grip on it to pull up out of battery compartment. I thought about putting a piece nylon strap under the battery and leaving enough up each side to give me something to pull it up out ff the battery compartment or using a big zip tie around the battery.
      Any others have any ideas or have had this issue.

      I have replaced the cracked stator cover on my non-running 2006 LT-F400F that I purchased recently, checked all the shafts vs the service manual and pics and advice here.  I replaced missing gears, bushings and washers, made sure that truth marks were all aligned properly, that the shift cam springs felt like they returned properly, etc.  IAfter installing the new stator cover I checked the transfer lever for proper movement from L-H-R and then cranked it up.  Happily, it runs and changes gears well in L,  but it will not shift into H or R for anything.  I have opened it back up and am going back through it looking for the missing puzzle piece(s) but how can I best check that I have everything right this time before buttoning it back up?
