Thoughts on the early Suzuki Quad Sport

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any thoughts on the early Quad Sports?  My very first ATV was a 1985 LT230S,  me and a buddy purchased them brand new in 1985, rode those little bikes till the wheels fell off,  I would like to find one to restore for nostalgic reasons and to teach my 14 yo son to ride.  Nice meeting you all!

My good buddy has a 230 and it is what he uses in the small trails when we go north.  I rode it half way around Little O and it was great. The centrifugal clutch made it a dream to drive.

He recently found a 250 with the sport clutch and it is an upgrade.

Worst part about them is their lack of value, which is a great thing at the same time.  On one hand you can get all lt 230s parts and part bikes for cheap in comparison to other machines.  But you'll never really get your money back should you decide to sell it.

I bought this ATV from a friend who had it stored in their shed for a few years. I've been going through it getting things ready to fire it back up and get it driving around. So far I've changed out fluids, removed and cleaned gas tank. I am waiting on a fuel fitting to be ready to able to put the gas tank back on and fire up the engine. I'll follow up once I get to that point with whether or not that went smoothly.
Right now however I've got a brake problem. The brakes were locked up. I took the brake line off the master cylinder and made sure that it wasn't locked up, it works. I proceeded to try and flush them no luck. Then I just disconnected the brake lines. They appear to be blocked up. I don't know if the hose portions deteriorated or what. I've found the front left and right brake lines, although $70-80 each doesn't make me happy... I can't find anyone selling the rear brake line 1930751 or the primary 1930760 that goes to the inverted flare cross fitting. This leads me to wonder if I should buy parts and tools to make my own brake lines.
      Two questions:
If I should decide to make my own can you point me to any tutorials out there on doing that and what size are these lines with the flared fittings?
Can anyone else find the two brake lines i listed for sale somewhere?

I have a gentleman that asked me to service his bayou for him.  I have always wondered what oil should be used in atv engines?  Pros?  Cons?  What weight should be used in what type of weather?  Is there one kind that I could bulk buy and safely used in any quad I worked on or owned?  What about performance?  Engine Life?  This has always been a 🤔🤔🤔 area for me with quads as far as why you would use one type of oil over another....
      Thanks!

After looking at the wire diagram I saw the blue w/black stripe wire is coming from the neutral and reverse lights looking for ground thru the neutral and reverse switches. If it finds ground, the lights come on. The same wire also comes from the neutral relay looking for ground at the same neutral and reverse switches. So it was easy to trick the relay into thinking the engine is in neutral all the time without having the light on all the time. Just cut the blue w/black wire at the relay and ground it. Easy
      Sorry the pics aren't better

Now it starts in any gear and indicator lights work as they should.

Does anyone know ways to regulate the speed etc other then the throttle screw? I have turn it almost all the way and it won't move on hills but keeps getting faster on flat gravel roads. I have a Chinese quad that's bigger but is a 3 gear so I just put it in first and let my kids go nuts cuz it might rattle it self to S... but it only goes so fast

Hi guys and thanks for taking the time to read this...
I've took my sons quad apart to tidy it up and replace the carb.
Replaced carb sprayed exhaust etc.. And when I reconnect the battery I get no starter??
I tried charging the battery and replacing it again to no avail.. On the battery ground wire there are two wires that seem to be pressed into the same connector.
I have read about a reset button under the wheel arch but can't seem to get it to work.

Here's a screenshot of the two wires that I think have been fused together circled on a diagram.

      Thanks in advance.
      Dean.
