HELP foreman 450s won’t shift out of first when running?

2001 Honda foreman 450s manual shift. i can shift through the gears when the ATV is off, but when I turn it on, I can shift into first, but I cannot shift to second or even back to neutral. Same with reverse. I can get it into reverse but cannot shift out. If i turn it off it will shift back fine, any idea? I just bought this and fear I got screwed over.

Hey @Billy Aldrich welcome to Quadcrazy. So what's happening here ? Is the engine idling ok and not too high where it could just be an idle adjustment ? Thats a semi automatic, Just a foot lever shifter yes ? 
 

I would think the clutch has something to do with this problem where you may need to open the side cover and take a look to see if its jammed up or stuck in any way. 
I would also drain the oil and see how it looks as far as any metal parts/shavings from a blown gear etc. 

But before all that:    
Can you explain how you think you got screwed? Did you purchase it from someone that may not have been honest with the mechanical condition? 
And can you bring it back?

      O3 sat a while. Engine is running fine. I got it into neutral, did some general tune-up and cleaning then pulled the shifter pedal up and it locked up and will not release into neutral again.  Does anyone have experience with this problem?  Thanks for looking and any help.

      I have a 2009 Honda Rancher TRX420FA with shifting problems.
      Usually it shifts ok when cold but after couple minutes it will stop shifting with no codes.
      The 1st shift clutch oil pressure when in first gear is 74psi. The 2nd shift clutch oil pressure when in second gear is 74psi.
      The 1st shift clutch oil pressure when in neutral is zero. The problem is when the tranny is in neutral the 2nd shift clutch pressure starts around 10-15psi and builds to 20psi. Is this normal?

      Just getting into this issue really. Been replacing solenoids but now I'd like to track down the problem. This time I'm not getting neutral/reverse lights or start button. Was on a creek ride when it started doing this recently. It cranks by arcing the solenoid and gives me no light or start button but if I crank with the pull cord....the neutral light and the button work. Turn it off and try to crank with the key and nothing. I'm looking into the safety switch issue tomorrow and re charging the battery. Just figured this was odd enough of a problem that you guys might be familiar. Thanks

      Hey guys, so I've been messing with my quad, and between all the starts, the battery is dead. Is there a certain way to charge these? Can I just throw a trickle charger on it and call it a day? can i also jump it like a normal car with a battery pack or is that to much voltage

      Hey guys i recently got a old recon 250 up and going and the prev owners had the carb screws all messed up. i was wondering if anyone can give me the basic run downs on if i turn both screws all the way "tightened" how many turns out will the quad run okay so i can then dial it in. the prev owner had the screws messed up so bad it woudnt idle. i got it to idle but idles rough. its super lean any guidence is appreciated
