Picked up a 98 Quadrunner 500 for a song. It's in rough shape, but funny enough it turned over and fired on starter fluid. Fuel lines are rotted to snot and the inlet tubes to the carb are rusty. I have a rebuild kit for the mikuni, but I'm wondering if anyone has used any of those alternatives on Ebay or Amazon that say they fit?
Friday evening went riding, rode for a good hour or so everything was fine. I went to take a short ride to the restroom (less than 100 yds away) and all of the sudden everything flickered and then just died out. Accompanying the problem I noticed the killswitch completely locked up. Once daylight hit took the killswitch apart to find it had shorted out and melted the plastic inside. Has anyone else had anything similar to this and if so what did you do to fix the situation? I have a new killswitch on the way to replace the obvious problem but was wondering could there be a bigger issue at hand. We tested with a voltage meter to make sure everything was still getting power from the battery and as far as we could tell it was.
Any advice/info would be GREATLY appreciated.
I have a 1999 Yamaha Big Bear 350 4x4 trying to get fixed up so my grandson can go out in the woods with me.
We have owned it over 10 years. It got harder to start, until it finally would not. Replaced the carb. Right afterwards, it started and ran nicely, but after turning it off, would not restart. Tonight I used starting fluid and ran, then died. Adjusted the idle up a little, used more starting fluid and ran great. It idled about 15 minutes. Turned it off, and restarted. Ran it around the yard about 5 minutes. Turned it off, and would not restart.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I have a 1994 Kawi Bayou 400 which had been running well until it sat for about a month. I left the carb dry while it was park and the temp had dropped below 0C in this time. Pulled it out last night to go for a ride and it fired up just like it should but noticed when I started to head down the road I could hold it to the bar and it didn't seem to accelerate. Lower gears weren't as noticeable but 4th and 5th it just seemed to have no acceleration and half or full throttle made no difference. if I tried to go into 5th gear with any throttle it would stall. I turned around and just poked home very slow and it seemed to stay running but this was between 15 and 20 km/h max.
I have taken the carb apart and it appears to be clean and nothing stood out on inspection to have dirt or ice. Is there something I should dig more into?
I have checked the plug and it appears to be sooty with easily rubbed off carbon. I plan to get a new plug today and test.
compression with the throttle wide open is 175 psi.
I have opened the drain plug in the exhaust thinking there could be a mouse in the exhaust or something but no difference.
I do find the engine is tickity compared to my 2000 Honda but I am not sure if this is just me looking for issues or if it has always been this way.
If anyone has any insight I would appreciate it.

I have noticed the fan comes on more often with the new CDI, could this be a program thing?

I currently have a 2015 Polaris 570SP that I bought new and have been riding for for over 20 years.
I don't do much trail riding or mudding like I used to when I was younger. I mostly use it around my 25 acres in the country as a utility vehicle (moving trailers, working on hunting stands and gathering firewood in the woods). The work in the woods sometimes tests the stock tires, but most the time I'm on high and dry ground. And every once in a while the wife and I will get together with some other atv friends and go for a day of trail riding. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year give or take.
I use the ATV year round, but here in Northwest Wisconsin, the snow depth makes it prohibitive to getting out in the woods or out on the frozen lake.
I don't want a snowmobile (they are such a bitch to get un-stuck in deep snow - I know because I have a friends 500lb sled stuck in 3 feet of snow and slush on the lake right now).
So I'm thinking about getting a tracked machine. I've never driven one, but have watched several youtube videos that are quite impressive. Especially for snow.
I have seen some systems are geared for snow only, and some that are all terrain. I would prefer to use a track system year round unless someone can convince me it's better to have tracks just for snow and wheels the rest of the year.
My questions are:
1. Between a Can Am 1000 and a Polaris 1000 - which one is better for tracks? I'm familiar with the Polaris AWD system and like it. I've "heard" that Can Am's 4wd isn't quite as good, but maybe that's not true. I'm open to other machines but these two are just my preference.
2. Tracks - all season vs winter.
How much of a pain in the ass is it to change from tracks to wheels to tracks each year? Are the snow only tracks worth it vs year round tracks? Can you comfortably trail ride (non winter) with tracks? I'm talking long, boring, well groomed, straight, flat dirt trails. At the end of 50 miles am I going to wish I had put the wheels on? How long are tracks good for? My machine will be garage stored and my annual mileage/hours will be minimal. Are there any things to be aware of in terms of warranty violation if I were to buy a new machine and put tracks on it myself vs the dealer? Any issues with stock axles, clutch or other components?
