I picked up a Big Bear 350 and took it out for my initial drive.  Runs good but noticed that sitting in neutral the rpm would slowly increase so that shifting into gear produced a strong jerk forward, and then revs would stay down.  It seemed worse as it warmed up.  Happened every time I let it sit a while idling in neutral.  (It also seemed to make reverse hard to engage.)

Is this typical, or is it a carb issue, or is it a clutch adjustment issue?  Any advice appreciated.

it sounds like a carb issue. Clean it really good and make sure to clean the jets with a fine wire like out of an old brake cable. and check the fuel. make sure it isnt bad and make sure it flows out of the petcock. i am on my second big bear and it will run forever if properly maintained. And i traded the first one for a camper trailer when i was homeless that was worth triple what i paid for the quad. I missed it and when the opportunity arose to get the current one i jumped on it as fast as i could

oh yeah check and clean the spark plug as well. and let us know what it looks like. For example is it gray and dry or black and wet or clean as a whistle or wet and clean. these are just a few examples of the description you can give.

After i did my rebuild it seems to not want to shift well. I think the cable is alright, and when it does shift its nice and solid. I have to basically use my hand to shift and i have to pull or push it very far, like max travel, to get it to shift. I also tried adjusting the clutch set screw. Any ideas where to go next, or maybe i should just grab a new cable to try.

I have a 2009 Honda Rancher TRX420FA with shifting problems.
Usually it shifts ok when cold but after couple minutes it will stop shifting with no codes.
The 1st shift clutch oil pressure when in first gear is 74psi. The 2nd shift clutch oil pressure when in second gear is 74psi.
The 1st shift clutch oil pressure when in neutral is zero. The problem is when the tranny is in neutral the 2nd shift clutch pressure starts around 10-15psi and builds to 20psi. Is this normal?

Just getting into this issue really. Been replacing solenoids but now I'd like to track down the problem. This time I'm not getting neutral/reverse lights or start button. Was on a creek ride when it started doing this recently. It cranks by arcing the solenoid and gives me no light or start button but if I crank with the pull cord....the neutral light and the button work. Turn it off and try to crank with the key and nothing. I'm looking into the safety switch issue tomorrow and re charging the battery. Just figured this was odd enough of a problem that you guys might be familiar. Thanks

Good morning, I am new to the forum. I'm 75 years old and love getting ATVs back to usable condition. I particularly like the 2006-2009 Arctic Cat 250 Utility. I currently own 6. The 2006 I am working on only has reverse and low gear. The "drive shaft" in the transmission is completely stripped where the high gear would mesh. Has anyone on here replaced the shaft. I'm told I have to split the case. I was hoping that someone on here could let me know how hard it will be. I already have it stripped down to where the shaft coming in from the clutch side is the only thing left. I was hoping I could just remove the driven clutch and drive it out from there. Directions say different. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Hello
My son scored a free Moto4 - late 80s from the looks of it. I don't know anything else about its history as the owner wasn't there when i picked it up. Can't see the VIN number as its a bit rusty.  He cleaned the carb and then with some either it started and still starts first pull.  Its runs really nice - not rattles etc.  Goes forwards well and the brakes work fine so it looks like a keeper, However, we have only managed to get it into reverse once.
      1) it won't shift down into what seems like where first would be - 2nd and upwards only. The changes between gears is fine.  No crunching or missed gears - just no first gear.  2nd gears appears to be as low as it will go
      2) the clutch - when you hold the gear lever up or down works (only the second ATV we have had.  Other is a Quadrunner which doesn't have this feature)
      3) no neutral light - will start when no in neutral - should it do that?
      4) the one time we did get it into reverse the neutral and then the red (reverse) lights worked. Swapped easy between forward and reverse - when it went into second, it didn't return to first or neutral
      5) checked the clutch adjust on the RHS - seemed fine to me.  When i turned the screw back 1/8 it was where it was to start with.  Clutch doesn't slip.  The bike will move forward is all gears.

      Any help would be appreciated

      Thanks

      Andrew
