Honda 1984 trx 200 rattle

Hello - New here. I have an old TRX 200. my dad bought it new, he passed away and its mine now. It has a few issues, that maybe some of you may know how to repair. The most concerning is the rattle while its running. I have a video, if i can figure out how to post it.

Its kind of hard to hear over the engine, but there is a definite rattle while idling, sounds like something shaking around inside it. I drove it all my life don't remember that noise

Kind of like loose change clinking. I'll see if i can pin point where its coming from next time i go down to my cabin.

Does this model have a replaceable oil filter? I'm going to do an oil change. will Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 5W-40 work ok? I have a bunch of that

The brakes were not working too. maybe just some new brake fluid needed. any special brake fluid needed?

The engine gets super hot as well, almost smoking (maybe just some oil on it). I was running it hard though. not sure if thats normal, haven't used it in a long time.

one more video, not much better tho. not sure if the rattle is from the gearbox or the pull start

I'll change the gear box oil as well. gotta find a video on youtube of how to do it LOL. any oil for the gearbox recommended?

What do you guys use to clean the engine? will brake cleaner strip the paint off?

The choke won't stay up, have to hold it when trying to start it. Any ideas on how to make it stay in position? been using a clamp, but thats not ideal

Also - any other easy servicing besides changing oils and filter that i should do? Maybe new clutch rings?

My internet is too crap to make out the noises..  You could put a screwdriver handle to your ear and use it as a stethoscope to locate the noise.

And you should download a service manual, it will answer a lot of your questions..

I couldn't make out the noise either I thought I heard it once but it sounded pretty normal, but a lot of exhaust noise. I didn't really hear any tapping noise. I would change the oil if it hasn't been changed in awhile and take a look , see if it quiets down, it probably lost its viscosity.

The oil filters are under the clutch cover there a 2 a screen that slides out and a paper element filter around the crank.

I'm thinking the clutch maybe warn or loose which is causing the rattle, not sure yet. What would be the symptoms of a warn clutch? could the clutch plates cause a clanging metallic sound. I think its only during idle, so it makes sense that the clutch plates could rattling. I'm going to take the clutch cover off and clean that out when i change the oil...I'm betting its never been cleaned before lol

I don't think the clutch plated would be rattling the springs keep that from happening, the centrifugal clutch maybe but I doubt it.

Yes I would agree,the clutch should hold tight with enough spring pressure that would not allow rattle. I agree with Gwbarm.

Just listened to video again this time I slowed it down sounds to me like it's trying to bump into gear. Can anyone else hear that?hope the best

Is there an adjustment on the 84' 200trx like this video? I downloaded the manual, haven't had time to go through it yet tho.

Yes it’s just above the oil fill plug
