Hopefully someone can help me out, I purchased a 350 moto4 2wd while I'm trying to fix a dying honda. I can't see the vin number as there was damage and a bar has been welded where I think the vin should be, The decals say 350 moto4 Huntaway, it has the square gear change low, high, reverse up on the left of the handlebars and it has three rectangle lights up on the dash. after googling I'm struggling to find anything called huntaway, Any ideas? Thanks.

  • I'd ignore the hunterway part, that's probably a local market name. You might find some reference to that name in a part listing site that's local(aussie or here).
  • Here are the years  they were called moto4 overseas..
  • 1986 1987 1988 1990 350 YFM350     YFM350ER Moto-4
    YFM350ERT Moto-4
    YFM350ERW Moto-4
    YFM350ERA Moto-4
    YFM350ERU Moto-4
  • 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 350 YFM350     YFM350D Moto-4
    YFM350ERE Moto-4
    YFM350ERG Moto-4

If you decide it's going to be one of those year ranges then I'd go to Babbits and open a new tab for each of those years of the model, then by clicking from tab to tab your eye will hopefully spot a flicker when one set of pictures is different to the tab before(your eye does notice the difference as a flicker), then take note what the difference is and go confirm which your bike has. Then you might find there is a tab or two with your version of that first difference you spotted, so close everything except the two or three tabs that have that part on and start comparing those tabs for any flicker/differences. That normally finds the model you have.. Then it gets tricky because even though you've found the year and basic version they use different electrics and carbs in different markets, so to be really certain that the service manual you download  is right you really need to study the wiring diagrams and make sure that the wiring is exactly the same as your bike. A good place to start is by looking at the cdi and noting how many wires it has, what shape the plugs are and what colour the wires are. Every detail of the cdi and wiring has to match.

All Moto-4 models have the VIN code  marked on the frame near the left footpeg when seated on the ATV. However, this specific location may change from year to year. Other areas where you can find the VIN are between the engine and the A-arm, on the neck of the frame close to the triple-tree, or slightly forward on the front-left footpeg. Cleaning the frame with a wire brush will help make the VIN more visible.

The guy I bought it off thought it was an 88. By the left footpeg is where a long flat bar has been welded sadly, so can't see the vin. Where is the engine number stamped?

I found a sticker on an upright post it's very hard to make out and it has a tear in it, but this is what I can see: jy43hpno o  naq4    0 (the gaps are either not there or hard to read) there is also12/91 on the label. The only engine stamp I can find is I think: 1uyo 348 c3. The other thing is there is no manual start, only electric.

I can't identify it by the frame and engine number, but that 12/91 will be the date of birth.. Which I think will make it the YFM350D.. Look in babbits yamaha atv parts.. Download several service manuals.. compare details..

Ok. Most the stuff in the service manuals will be the same in most respects. When we look in the supplement for a specific year it shows that they've changed the size of a bearing or shaft or gear or some part, and/or, and most commonly what effects us when doing work, that the ignition or carb has changed. Most of the small model/year changes don't make any difference to us working on the bike, but be real careful if referring to the manual about the ignition or carb.

Well while I was waiting for new parts for the choke, I decided to adjust the clutch. When I removed the lock nut, I found the guy I bought it from or someone else had stripped the threads on the adjustment rod. I couldn’t get the adjustment rod to turn without putting a pair of channel locks on the screw driver, this was telling me something was wrong. So now the rod pushes in and out and spins freely too freely. So guess I’ll have to take the clutch housing off to see what’s going on and replace the adjustment rod, it’s threads are beyond repair, and there is something going on with the adjustment rod. If there’s another way please let me know. The further I go the worse it gets. Thanks for any help.

      Following on from this thread;

I've finally got around to pulling the clutch cover off to have a look at the shifter ratchet mechanism. The screw holding the pinned star wheel has come loose and the wheel flops about. Unfortunately the keyway on the shifter cam has broken on both sides, I found both pieces.
      Anyone had this problem?
The keyway on the cam "ramps" out, so I'm thinking of making a slightly longer key with a ramp ground into it. I'll put it back together with retaining compound. It may not work but I think it's worth a try.

I put a new carb on my trx500fe which I have done before on other models, but this foreman was a real pain, takes forever to get to the carb. Anyway I got the new one installed . I also changed the choke cable while I had it this far. When I turned the gas back gas started running into the air filter box. I did have trouble with the choke cable, it didn’t seem long enough to run where the old one did and the elbow that came with the new carb had more of a 90 on the angle. It didn’t feel like it was binding but I don’t know if the valve was seated on the valve seat. The choke pushed in smooth but who knows what happened in side the valve body. I don’t know if this could be the problem or not I hadn’t run the it just turned the gas back on. Appreciate any help, hint, hint Mech and GW or anybody else. Deer season is over in a little over a week. My power chair won’t make it down those muddy roads. Thanks again.

So.. It has now become cranky about changing from "drive" to "reverse". Sometimes it's seamless as it's always been, other times it just goes "click, click....click, click " when going from reverse to forward, or from forward to reverse..  Then it gives up and just stops at neutral.  Only thing that seems to help is to give it a bit of a bump / wiggle with my own weight. Any ideas as to what to check? It's low miules / hours .. Dealership maintained..

Hi. I just joined the community. I have a sheep farm and use a Polaris 500HO, Polaris 700efi and a JD Gator 825i for different jobs around the farm. I do all the repairs myself so I am sometimes needing some advice and maybe I can be of some help to others as well.
