86 230 quadsport clutch

Recommended Posts

I just picked up an 86 230 quadsport. The clutch slips bad. Where can I get a service manual for the repair. Is it better to just get whole new clutch basket or will just getting new clutch disk be ok. I have never pulled apart a clutch on any ATV. Thanks in advance for the input

I found this on Amazon [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Clymer-Suzuki-Lt230-Lt250-1985-1990/dp/0892876085/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237817793&sr=8-1]Suzuki LT230 & LT250 85-90: Penton Staff: 9780892876082: Amazon.com: [email protected]@[email protected]@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/[email protected]@[email protected]@51WWMbBqKHL[/ame]

Couldn't find anything on Ebay but you might want to keep looking there. The one on Amazon is not that bad a price though. I don't know about the answer to your question. I would think if nothing is torn up that just the clutch disks would be ok.

Agreed, As long as the basket is in good shape, you should be fine with just plates.

DO NOT stick a screwdriver between the fingers on the clutch center to hold it still while you loosen or tighten the clutch center nut. I made that mistake once, it sucked. That would only matter if you need to replace the center or the basket. I just thought I would mention that just in case you need to replace more than just the springs, plates and discs.

check your basket for grooves if its smooth and the plates are not sloppy in the basket then basket is fine. ohyea a heads up incase u have to remove the clutch basket ..dont.. use a or mini prybar, screwdriver etc between the fingers of the basket or u could snap or bend one off!, while removing the nut in the center of the basket. As far as the clutch disks/plates id get a new full set. and id check to see if the prussure plate is not groved if it is replace it. retighten the bolts on the clutch in a star pattern so the prussure plate closes equally on the disks and wont casue wear spots on the disks. And remember to have some slack in the clutch cable so the prussure plate closes all of the way on the clutch disks and wont cause the clutch to slip. good luck and have fun with your wheeler.

      Hi everyone,
I have a question, if the starter clutch gear looks fine but is still not working correctly then all I should need to replace is the one way bearing, right?
      thanks,

my son has a 50cc Baja atv automatic trans that at time (right now) jerks then dies, once he trys to start it the starter causes the quad to lunge forward like the clutch is not releasing. when this happens, you cannot push the quad backwards either even with the engine off. if you raise the rear on a block it will start but the rear wheels will spin even at idle, if you pull the quad off the block the load of the machine will instantly kill the engine. im guessing its a stuck clutch issue however I cannot find any info anywhere. im an ase master auto tech so I am pretty mechanical just need a point in the right direction. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance!

I have taken the cover off and don't see why, but it rubs the shroud/ belt guard at a low idle, there is a small hole starting to rub thru it?

      I recently bought this quad.
When I shift into gear it wants to take off on me or stall if I hold the brake. I can get it moving if I use the shifter like a clutch and let it down easy.
I have manual and adjusted clutch but it seems to be all or nothing meaning it won't go at all.
What is my next move? New clutch? Any ideas?
