2001 Can Am DS650 Not Starting

Recommended Posts

I just got a 2001 ds650, has a Ron woods cdi box, pro circuit t4 exhaust, k&n filter, a few other things , anyway it ran perfectly for me tons of power no weird sounds looks brand new, I rode it around in the woods today for about 3 hours fine no problems at all, I turned it on and off about 15 times and it started everytime no issue, than towards the end it just shuts off and won't star back up, it turns over but won't start, I thought I was out of gas maybe even though it looked like a quarter tank at least so I put it on reserve and nothing still, I thought maybe I had flooded it so I left it alone for five hours and still wouldn't star and now my frigging battery is dead, anyone know what it could be? It has never not started before it always runs perfect, than nothing, the lights and fan and everything still came on but it just would not start, it wanted to, I'd appreciate any help or tips at all, on anything about the ds, thanks

Is it possible to push start one of these with a dead battery or does it need a fully charged battery no matter what, also there is a lot of mud up in the battery area, could this be why it won't start or push start out of no where

Yup the lights and fan come right on, not now because I tried starting it too many times, but yes they did the engine just wouldn't fire up

Hmm...I wonder if you have a dead spot in the starter motor. Try tapping that starter with a hammer.

I tried push starting it from where it was stuck out in the woods 3 or 4 times but nothing, we had plenty of speed it should have started, it literally ran perfect and just shut off out of nowhere after not goving us a problem all day

, I ended up having to push it about a mile to my buddies house , that was fun, what a workout, I'm wondering if its just the battery, or maybe the ground wire, or maybe spark plugs, but I dunno I'm not familiar with these atvs, it turns over just no start, if the battery is super old and almost dead I'm wondering if this would prevent it from starting

Would a dead spot in my starter motor cause my wheeler to just shut off while it was already running though, cus it just shut off out of no where and wouldn't start after that

And thank you for your help also I appreciate it like I said I'll take in any knowledge about this quad that I possibly can, I'll need to know it all at one point or another

I had a spark plug crap out on me in my raptor while warming it up. It was like someone flipped a switch, was running fine and just died. Try a new plug, even if it sparks outside the combustion chamber. Under compression can be a different story.

      Hi all,

Picked up my first Brute Force yesterday. What should have been an awesome afternoon of riding turn a bit into a deception. As I was unable to really take it out for a test drive at the shop, I decided to buy it and agreed that I would take the test drive at home.
When giving full throttle I noticed that the Brute was choking and lost all of its powers. Faulty fuel pump most likely.
Called the shop and the are coming to pick it up and repair it and bring it back. Good service. Nevertheless feels a bit sour in the mouth as I was told it was a 100% good.
Need to have some patience I now before I can really start riding.
      Cheers,
      Erik

Got my Yamaha Grizzly buttoned up finally and went for a quick 2 hour ride in the power lines with my neighbor, who has a Yamaha Kodiak. We have access from his yard, which is nice. Was a beautiful day today to get out and will try to go more often. Ran into two other quad riders with a sportsman and I think grizzly. Also ran into a dirt bike rider. 😎

I have a Polaris sportsman 500 and I just replace the piston in rings and head gaskets on it and I made sure the timing was exactly right it's getting gas and fire but it still won't start. It sounds like it has low compression but at the same time it sucks in air pretty good from the intake. Also the valves are adjusted to spec. It did start the first time I installed the Piston and Rings but it only stayed running for 5 seconds with starting fluid and then it shut off and then I tried to turn on the next day and it didn't do nothing and I've been going at it for three weekends now and it still ain't doing nothing. I wonder if i set the timing off a little or a lot if it would start up, because I inline the crankshaft sprocket with the crankcase timing line like it said in a manual and the two points on top of the cam sprocket to top dead center of the piston. I even took the spark plug out and stuck a camera light in there to make sure it was top dead center and it still won't do anything. AlsoI drain the carburetor some and shut d fuel petcock off to see if it was getting too much gas and that still isn't the problem. And where I live all the darn mechanics that work on Polaris ATVs are booked for two weeks which sucks and I need hope immediately or I'm just going to set the ATV on fire because I'm getting very frustrated with this crappy brand. Every other name brand ATV I worked on I got it running right and I replace the piston, rings and everything etc, and they started up fine. But this is starting to get very frustrated and I don't know who to talk to who had this problem before, who "don't have to come look at it". Cuz when they say that that means you're not going to come look at it until 2-4 Weeks later because there booked, which I don't have time for. Living in northern part of Florida sucks.

Hi Guys, I'm a newbie but pretty handy with a DMM (controls technician). I have been fighting a junker quad i picked up as a project bike, was assured it would run if I replaced the battery and cleaned the carb. I replaced the battery, rebuilt the carb with a OEM kit. FIxed all my switches and foul played circuitry from the last guy.... So I could get it to start long enough to test the quad, it seems okay from a trans/engine point. However I couldn't get the carb adjusted to idle to save my life with the idle air screw or the thumb screw on the card for the slide. I took it to a friend who is much more familiar with yamaha and quads and he double checked my carb rebuild all was fine, he adjusted the float to make the fuel not overfill which i missed.
He pulled the air intake, got it started and couldn't get it to idle with or without air filter. We started looking at the spark plug (new) and he tested it with a spark plug clamp meter, tested good, pulled it and grounded and it had spark but he felt it was weak. I order a working used oem coil to try the easy things first. When I ohm out the coil on the quad with my Fluke i'm seeing .4 ohms on primary (ground lug to male connector) and 18K ohms on secondary (inside boot to ground lug). Seems like this forum is full of bear trackers so I'm hoping someone has some ideas to help me figure where to go with this. His thought was he know I ave fuel and he knows I have air, spark would be next. I have spark but possibly weak. Thanks

I know this tooic has been addressed by many, I’ve looked through many forums and pages. I did not find anything like the problem i have.
I have a 2007 Kingquad 450. I have a new fully charged battery. When i turn the key, the dash flashes and seems to struggle before getting fully lite. We can hear a small relay near the computer clicking, i think it is the fuel pump relay. When i turn off the engine kill switch and press the starting button relays click and all the power shuts off, i turn the key off, engine kill switch then start over, power is there. Atv will start with pull start, but not elextricly. if i try to use my winch, all power cuts and engine dies.

Can anyone tell me what it may be? or has anyone fsced an issue like this before?

I have a 1999 Sportsman  500, it was running fine, than started to lose power in the winter, I adjusted the idle screw and away I went, than a few weeks ago it died, I have found that i am flooding the engine, compression was at 70PSI and due to the compression release mech. i assume i am good as it compared to the same PSI on a 2000 sportsman 500 i have. i cannot start the atv unless i go full throttle and it starts an runs for about 30 sec than dies, again it is flooded. i ordered a new carb off ebay as i could get one for around $40. put that in same issue, i have checked the timing, (good), valves out of adjustment i adjusted to .006 still same issue, i have found the exhaust lobe and rocker arm to have some wear, i have ordered new ones, but am looking for any other input in this area as well. would the exhaust cam and rocker arm cause the engine to flood? i have used a bore scope and the piston liner has good cross hatching still? any input would be great.
