New to the forum, I have that year and model atv and I cannot get it to idle so far at all... I bought it off this lady who had let it set for two years without starting it.... I can get it to run as long as i use the throttle to start it, but when I let off it will not idle at all... I did buy a rebuild kit.. and the only things i changed was the things inside where the float goes... reckon one thing is called a needle valve... so changed that and anything else within the carburator where the float is at... including changing the float... I did notice the shut off for gas does not completely shut off when on the off spot... but still it should idle when starting it I would think.... I can pull the choke out all the way and it will idle but when i push the choke back in it will stall right away... can anyone help I do not know much about working on atvs..

also i cannot find a idle screw anywhere on the carburator, there is a real big screw around the bottom area facing toward the ground, but when i turn it i cannot tell a bit in the idleing rather i turn it one way are the other.. sure would appreicate any advice.. thank you

sounds like plugged up carb. needs a good cleaning and blast of compressed air. not sure if that carb has a fuel screw, just air i think, once in all the way, about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 turns counter clockwise is about right .... and if you turn the carb upside down with the float bowl off, the float should be about half an inch or better from the housing to the bottom of float (or top when upside down).

thank you i will try to take it off today if possible and do that, If i end up having to buy another carbutator not sure where I can find one at for that late of a year. thanks

thanks.. Mine also has the manual pull stick there is a cable going into the back of the carburator, maybe its not a choke cable, maybe its a throttle cable, I really do not know... I just no its bent at the end and goes then into the carburator, So I am trying to figure out how to remove it so i can take the carburator all the way off and either try to rebuilt it myself or have it rebuilt.

looking at the diagram i am thinking its the throttle cable that I need to remove to get the carburetor all the way off, I looked at the diagram and it shows two things as far as I can tell on the back side of the carb.. I call it the back side but really I guess if setting on the atv it would be considered the front side. it seems to have a long threated piece on it and then closer to the carb is a regular threated nut and there seens to be a small brace like piece that holds it in place attached with a phyllips screw... that is the piece anyways I need to remove so i can try to fix the carb.....

I have a couple of questions again please. In cleaning the carb i took the needle valve out.... it had a string on it and a rubber ring and a small washer... I need to know for sure how these go back because they fell out of the carb when i took the needle valve out and I am not unsure of how they go back in I think the spring first slides onto the needle valve, but what comes next if so the washer or the rubber O ring? Next I noticed the breather that i purchased does not set tightly into the hose that comes out of the carb would that keep it from idleing correctly? cause i can put something against the hose and it trys to idle? right now though i have the float off cause gas is pouring out of the carb when i try to start it... Thank you in advance

finally got the atv to run great... it was the intake hose that bolts to the intake then bolts to the carb... it had a big crack in it so was sucking air... now running great.

now i am trying to figure out how to ride it...lol.... maybe someone can tell me for sure I think I am doing it right but just need to be sure.... its a 5 speed manual.... it does not have a clutch on the handle bar that i seen in a video on youtube of how to ride a manual atv.... so all i can figure out is you just change it from one speed to the next by lifting up the clutch arm i guess you could call it with your left foot? is that correct, does anyone know about these type of atv's?

right on !!

yes, just shift with your foot when the revs sound right, like a car/truck. it's ok to kinda power shift going up in gears, but let the revs come down when you want to gear down, the transmission will work like a braking system too ...

Hi guys, I have a 2004 big bear 400. Last winter while plowing the driveway, I heard a loud pop from the left side of the engine. It continued to run as I looked for leaky fluid, but then died shortly after backing it up and won’t start now. The oil light comes on when I try to start it, no noise or anything else.
No blown fuses that I can find.

Hi all. I have a timberwolf 250 2nd that will not start.. I thought it was out of time bc the guy I got it from said it just quit on him. The tensioner had a nut welded to it and it was like2 teeth off. I installed new tensioner and chain and it still will not start. It has fire and it will not hit off brake cleaner. It has compression. Haven't put a gauge but I'm sure it will crank and run with what it has. I double checked my work and it's still in time. Spot on. Both valves move. I'm about to put a feeler gauge on them and I'll cone back but other than that any ideas?

Just picked up an 84 LT185 ATV, I understand there was an accessory add  on that gave it electric start, anyone have any info about that kit?
