About Me

My Garage

  1. I have a 2001 Yamaha Kodiak 400 (YFM400FWAN©) On a recent hunting trip a problem popped up and I hope someone else has experienced this, so that I can learn from them instead of going on my own hunt for an answer. The Problem: On cold days (sub 25 degree) I choke the Kodiak and it starts instantly. It revs up and runs on "high idle" without any problem. However when I return the choke lever to its "normal" position the ATV continues to run and a very high idle. I cant put it into gear until the idle comes down, which it doesn't. In order to use the bike I have to shut it off and when I restart it I must place it into gear before the engine gets a chance to rev up. It then returns to a normal idle and the machine behaves normally. This only happens on real cold days but it is a problem I want to fix. Can anyone offer some help?
  2. I hadn't driven my Kodiak for a two months, and since it was low on fuel, the first thing I did was filled it up to maybe 7/8 full. Getting ready to start it, I rotated the fuel selector switch to "on" and within seconds I smelled and saw fuel dripping onto the floor. I quickly turned it off and the fuel gradually stopped - I can repeat this. The fuel is flowing from the hose that is connected to the bottom of the carb, and routes around to the left side toward the wheel well. Any idea what's going on here? It ran fine the last time I had it out. Thanks...
  3. Hi, I have just purchased a 2002 Yamaha Kodiak 400 I think, the vin has worn off and I have located an engine number I think it is J312E-004674, could anyone tell me where the engine number might be please
  4. I looked through many of the threads and could find it was wondering if anyone could post a link to a PDF Service Manual 2008 Kodiak 450. I found one for 2005 but I am sure there are differences. Thanks all
  5. alright here's the deal. I bought i 2004 kodiak for a great price but i has some issues that i need help with. the first is the atv shows a random MPH while setting still and it changes when you start moving but is by no mean accurate. shows something like 5 MPH sitting still and like up to 25 MPH while moving in low range. the second is the atv shutters in reverse and won't back up. it idles fine in reverse but when you give it throttle it shutters like it would if you were backing up too fast and the speedo shows somewhere around 10 MPH but i'm not moving. could both these issues be related to a speed sensor somewhere? any help is greatly appreciated.
  6. i was wondering if i could get some help. i been trying to locate where the fuel and air adjustment screws are located on my 95 kodiak 400. i think i found the fuel screw.. i know where the throttle adjuster is but i cant find the air screw. or is there an air adjustment on these carbs?
  7. Hi Everyone This is my first post and I was wondering if there is anyone who can help me solve a problem I have with my Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4 Fitted with a Mikuni Carburetor . The year of the quad is around 1998, the reason I am not sure of the date is, there wasn't any paperwork and no details on the frame either. The quad had a bad leak from the carb overflow which indicated that the float needle valve was blocked or passing so I replaced this and put everything back together. The quad ran really well until I took it onto some rough ground to have a ride around, a few hours later the engine started to run really rough as if the engine was flooding. I have removed the carb again and cleaned the needle valve out and the whole of the carb just in case there where any dirt behind it. Engine now runs fine again but fuel has started to run out the carb overflow again. I have tried everything to try and stop the fuel leaking out the overflow but its still happening. My last thoughts where to adjust the float level and its still happening. Has anyone got any thoughts on the problem or could suggest whats causing the fuel leaking out the overflow. Thanks for reading Kevin
  8. Does anyone know where to get a winch mount for a 1995 Kodiak 400? I can't seem to find one anywhere on the internet.
  9. I am assuming it is leaking from the overflow. Took the carb apart and it is clean inside. Put it back together and gas leaks out the host at the bottom. Tested to make sure the drain screw is not the problem when I had it off.
  10. I have a couple of questions again please. In cleaning the carb i took the needle valve out.... it had a string on it and a rubber ring and a small washer... I need to know for sure how these go back because they fell out of the carb when i took the needle valve out and I am not unsure of how they go back in I think the spring first slides onto the needle valve, but what comes next if so the washer or the rubber O ring? Next I noticed the breather that i purchased does not set tightly into the hose that comes out of the carb would that keep it from idleing correctly? cause i can put something against the hose and it trys to idle? right now though i have the float off cause gas is pouring out of the carb when i try to start it... Thank you in advance
  11. :confused:Can anyone tell me how to fix an oil leak where the right axle comes out of the diff.?The axle on the right side has a large cast iron piece that I dont know if it comes off or is part of the axle. I NEED HELP!!!
  12. I just bought a Used Kodiak, that I will be using mainly for Ice fishing, and it ran fine at the guys house started right up and everything seemed fine. I Got home and Hopped on to take it off the trailer, i Pressed the brake and hit the button and it turned over, fired up and then dies. (it starts cold so I was not concerned.) When I hit the electric start again there was no noise or anything, Just the coolant indicator light illuminates when ever I hit the button. I cycled through the shifter (park, reverse neutral, and drive,.) and then hit the button again, with the same result. I noticed the park light does not illuminate, but the reverse and Neutral do. I tried starting it in Neutral, and again nothing it just illuminates the coolant light. SO am I doing something wrong? I finally put it in neutral and pushed it off the trailer, and started googling. I have not seen anything on this being a problem or even what it would indicate. Any help appreciated.
  13. Since day one of owning the Kodiak I have not been able to shift gears going up steep roads nor down steep roads, it will shift gears fine going straight on a road though. But if i start out going up a steep road in 1st gear no matter how i try while moving it will not let me shift into 2nd gear ..etc... unless I stop then I can change into 2nd gear its the same way if I am going down a steep hill what ever gear I am in I have to stay in that gear till I stop and change to another gear. but again it is fine if I am driving on a straight road is this normal? if not is there a way to adjust it maybe a linkage to adjust to where it will shift easier when I use my foot to try and shift uphill or downhill.. I recently drove a small kawaski 220 and it shifts easily going up a steep road and down it without having to stop to shift. Would appreciate some insight from someone that knows about these type of atvs when it comes to shifting them. Thank you
  14. I am unable to find the default mixture screw setting for this Mikuni BSR33 carb. The screw only unscrews 4 turns and does not unthread out of the carb, (no way to clean it). When I took the carb apart to clean it the screw was set at 1 turn out. I bought this unit when it was only a few months old from a friend so I know it is the original carb. I know most carbs are set at 2.5 turns out, but would like to find out what this specific carb should be set for.
  15. At the end of last Winter my snowplow cable broke and now I finally need to get around to replacing it. Original cable was 1/8" but I think I can upgrade to 3/16" - anyone have any experience there? It's a Yamaha branded plow w/ a Warn (I think) manual lift. There's a ball-end on the cable, so not sure if that complicates matters and I need to get a pre-made cable. Appreciate any insight
  16. Hello everyone im new here and I have a problem with my 2004 yamaha kodiak 450. Yestarday my friend and I were riding in the creek and it is a slant where my front rack is under water but my exhaust is a couple inches out of the water and it starts sputtering when I go in reverse and cuts off. It won't crank back and my friend pulls me out.we check air box and it is a little wet but not much. I have it snorkeled by the way. And today I try to crank it again and still won't start please help! Thanks
  17. hey all i have just a quick question. my friend is selling me what he says is a 2005 Kodiak 400. it has a solid rear axle and needs a new axle shaft. all of the research i do when looking for parts points me to believe that the 2005 had only IRS in the back. i was just wondering if any one knows if the 2005 special edition was available with a solid rear axle. thank you for any replies.
  18. I have a 2003 kodiak, 450, that the tail, light is being turned on by front brake control handlebar lever which I dont think should even happen . I have disconnected the brake switch by removing the spring. You can barely touch the lever and the tail light comes on the problem is after parking there is enough contact that the light dont burn but it will run the battery down in a period of 24 hours. Its a good machine with right at 5000 miles and 1500 hours but I am at the end of my rope with it
  19. Starter turns over but not motor ? Put start but sounds like something is grinding .?
  20. Hi all just been looking to upgrade my exhaust pipe and it seems I am very limited as to what there is that is a direct fit onto a 2006 wolverine. My question is will the exhaust slip on pipes for the 400/450 kodiak and 450 grizzly bolt up directly? Have it narrowed down to a big gun evo or a mbr 6000 from a local dealer but they are all listed for the kodiak and grizzly not the wolverine. Looks as though a big gun may be what I want for performance and sound but the price is $445 compared to the $235 Mbr. Does anyone have any input on this subject?
  21. I am looking for a service manual for a 2008 Kodiak 450.
  22. I purchased my kodiak earlier this winter. It was a being stored in a heated shop however when I went to pick it up, it was sitting outside in -20 and the throttle was froze shut. The bike seemed very clean with no mud on it so perhaps the PO washed it before storing it and some moisture got in the cable. My shop is unheated but in an effort to get it going, I made a little tarp tent and stuck a construction heater under it. Throttle cable came free and the bike started up an ran fine. 2 months later the bike is just sitting in my shop not being used. The throttle still freezes shut when the shop is cold but today, it was warm enough that it was free. But I wonder if there is an issue with the choke cable sticking? The bike seems to flood and won't start. I built my tarp tent again and warmed up the quad with the heater. Not sweltering hot but warm. I could get the bike to fire a couple times but then it seemed to flood again and wouldn't start. So is there something causing the choke not to work related to the cold? The lever seems to flip up no problem but not sure if it is doing something on the carb end causing it to flood and not start. The plug is new, spark good, and a nice mist of gas comes out of to piston when it's flooded. I don't want to tear into things if I just have to wait for warmer weather but would still like to get some early spring riding in. Any help?
  23. When I back up with a load on the atv makes a sort of muffled backfiring noise and does not seem to have very much power. Any ideas?
  24. Hi I have a 1998 Kodiak 400 that locked up the bottom end. 2 actually.... I am looking for used engines or parts and I have run into some questions. The local shop isn't so helpful. What years are the same? I have a 2002 400cc motor in a box already. Could a 350cc from the same year bolt in there? I have a wrecked one in hiding out back. I work on a ranch we have several of these monsters. All have a shton of miles on them. These things are easy to work on and work with. We plow with them. Maintain power lines and fences from them. Any info would be really helpful.. Thanks
  25. I hope this is the right spot. I'm looking at buying a 2005 400 4*4 Kodiak and wanted to know what to look for, how to check the mileage as there is no odometer and value.
