About Me

My Garage

  1. I recently picked up a king quad 700 that doesn't run in the hopes of getting it running by spring. It had been previously taken apart some and a few pieces are missing in the engine, but the frame is complete and in good condition. The motor will need a piston, rings, cylinder, cams, and a few misc parts that are missing. Also the cases will need to be split to remove the pieces of piston that are in the crankcase. The piston blew up at high rpm and did a number on the cylinder so I'm trying to find out if it would be worth rebuilding this motor it buying another engine to swap in. There may be more damage to this engine that I can see so I was wondering how bad the insides of it could be considering it destroyed the piston. I have found a motor for 1200 plus 200 shipping, the only problem is I don't have that much now and I would have to save up a while before being able to afford it. Any suggestions appreciated.
  2. Hi, I have just purchased a 2002 Yamaha Kodiak 400 I think, the vin has worn off and I have located an engine number I think it is J312E-004674, could anyone tell me where the engine number might be please
  3. I'm in need of a replacement engine for my '04 400ex. Can anyone help or at least give me some direction. Thanks
  4. Hi! Problem with Can-Am Outlander 800 engine start, each time when engine is hot after long time drive (starter rotate wery hard, self starter is OK). When engine is cold no problems with starting... Maybe someone can help??? Thanks!
  5. Hello, I'm new here to this forum and have a question for ya on my 05 raptor 350. After about 10-15 minutes the engine does not want to idle. After adjusting the idle screw, the engine will run, but now the idle is really high. When riding after the warm up period the engine pops, sputters, and ocassionally backfires and dies. It acts as if the fuel/air mixture is wrong but unlike my two stroke there is not a fuel/air mixture screw for adjustments. Any suggestions??? Thanks Steve
  6. I am in desperate need of an engine, i found a 2005 400EX engine with reverse, I was wondering if it would fit on my 2002 400EX frame, and the wirng and everything hook up, without modifying anything, All help is appreciated, thanks
  7. The engine has this stamp, J416-114443. Does anyone know what they mean?
  8. Hi all, I have an EGL Moto Quad with standard 250 1 cylinder 15hp motor. Have got 30hp Ex250 Kawasaki motor with everything to run for transplant. This is my first attempt of a mod like this and would be very interested in any similar projects people have done. I understand it is critical to get alignment spot on but what about pitch of engine? Any feedback would be awesome.
  9. I have a 1994 Yamaha Timberwolf that has been a strong running machine until recently. This past year I replaced the pulsar coil which resolved a prior problem I was having. After running for several weeks without a hitch, I one day went out to start it and it would not. The starter motor is turning but it does not engage the engine. Can anyone suggest a remedy to get it running again? I have gone over the whole electrical system while in the process of correcting the pulsar coil problem. I believe where I hear the starter motor turning the problem lies elsewhere; I think.
  10. heres a quickie guys what kind of sae 10 w-40 can I pick up from my local advanced auto parts orileys or auto zone and do you recommend synthetic 10 w-40 for a 440 big bore 2000 440ex:GEEK:
  11. I have an engine out of an 87 big bear 4x4 that I am going to put in a golf cart, and am needing to do some block mods. what I need to know is how the oil runs in the transfer case? I know that the oil comes out from the bolt that holds the 90 degree gear that turns the out put shafts, and I am guessing that it is a drain hole on the back side. Will it hurt anything to block these off? I will not be using the t-fer case because I want to turn the engine sideways to shorten up the distance needed to the rear end. If this wont work, What other engine would be good to use?
  12. I have been working on a golf cart project for the last 4 months and ran into a major problem today, I have a 98 zr 500 snowmobile engine that I am planning to run in the reverse direction. I have set the timing to the opposite side of TDC and turned the pull starter around and come to find out, that I don't get any spark when pulling on the rope. I tested the wires going to the CDI and none of them get any power so I assumed that my stator wont work in reverse. Can I run power to the CDI from a battery and make it run? If so, what wire needs the power? If I can get it running, My next step is going to be to try and make it run on HHO and still inject the 2 cycle oil to keep it from overheating and ware out too quickly. Has anyone ever found a way to turn a 2 stroke into a glo engine? Im sure there is someone out there who is smart enough to tell me how to make this work.
  13. Just curious as to why the engine brake wouldn't hold back any longer on an 08 Honda Rubicon. Any one feel like weighing in on this issue??
  14. Just rebuilt the top end on my 08 big bear 400. Piston rings wristpin gaskets. Got it back together it runs no back firing or popping but it takes a lil long to idle down and every now and then it kinda burps or misses for a split second and not often either I guess and then recovers just fine. Could the timing be off a tooth and cause this or would it be backfiring and popping a lot? Any other ideas?
  15. I am troubleshooting a problem with an 1997 Polaris Scrambler 500 and I could use some help. It will start and idle with no problems. When I give it throttle, it sputters, cuts out, backfires, etc. (very similar to having water in the gas). I have done the following: cleaned the carb & checked settings/jets (it is perfect), adjusted fuel screw (no change), checked intake for leaks (all good), replaced & gapped spark plug, fresh fuel, new fuel filter, fuel pump holds pressure and appears to be pumping fuel, exhaust is not plugged, air filter is in good shape, cam chain tensioner & cam timing (good shape), pulled the black wire on the rev limited (no change), added a battery charger to see if voltage was causing problems (no change). I ran a leak down test and found that I am leaking approx. 10%. I could not detect air coming out of the intake or exhaust ports, so I am assuming that I am leaking past the rings into the bottom end. Another thing I found was that the valves were very loose. They should be at .006" and the clearance I measured ranged from .008" to .014". I believe the exhaust side was the higher measurement. Would the rings and potentially worn valvetrain cause this issue? Should I look elsewhere, like at the stator? Any help is appreciated.
  16. I have a problem with the quad losing engine braking down hill and just free wheeling. When I start a decent the engine braking is active but then disengages after a few seconds allowing the quad to free wheel. This forces me to use the manual brakes to control the speed. Once the speed is slow enough the engine braking is active again, but will quickly disengage after a few more meters. I'm guessing this is a transmission issue of some sort. Can anyone confirm this and suggest a solution. Thanks.
  17. 2013 Honda 500 Foreman. Check engine light blinks 9 times then goes away. Then it starts its 9 blink count again. Does anyone know what"s the diagnosis?
  18. I have a grizzly that has a lower engine knock. Any pointers you guys can give me on tearing it apart to fix the problem? im guessing a connecting rod is knocking. Im going to take the head and cylinder off tomorrow to inspect the piston to conecting rod and see if thats my problem. im betting its the lower bearing or something. the manual says you have to remove the engine to replace the lower...is that right? any tips?? thanks for any and all help.
  19. Hey guys you helped me before on my 700 Sportsman now I am asking for help again. Here is the story. I purchased a 2005 Polaris Ranger 6x6 with a 500 carbureted engine from a government surplus auction. It was missing the ECM Module and the magnetic switch that goes to the starter. I replaced ECM with a used unit and the switch with a new unit. After putting in a new battery and turned the key nothing happened. I get lights but no engine turn over and not even a click in the switch or starter. I pulled the spark plug and the tip of the spark plug is bent. When I put a scope down into the engine I see a piece of something across the port where the spark plug goes (See attached pic). Not sure if it is a ring or what. My question is what next? Do I have to pull the engine to replace the rings / check the piston? Is that wire across the port supposed to be there? If I have to pull the engine does anyone have the procedure to do that? Can I change the rings with the engine in the frame? Thanks again for any suggestions. I have common sense and a bunch of tools. I just need to know what is the best way to do this.
  20. I have this 4 wheeler that I am building and i have encountered a problem. The 4 wheeler will not move! I am a beginner to all of this. The clutch over inside is rotating but the chain is not moving; I already replaced the clutch it is brand new. The clutch overheats and it starts to shoot out smoke. Is this a clutch problem? Am I using the wrong type of clutch? The clutch is a Max-Torque 3/4 in. bore and 10 teeth. Or is the Engine too small? Is the 4 wheeler to heavy? Im using a Briggs and Stratton 3 hp 127 cc 3600 rpm Here are some pictures of the clutch and the engine. 4 wheeler clutch and engine pictures by javydiaz - Photobucket
  21. Hey there, i am new to this forum and am wanting to rebuild the engine on my old 92 yamaha big bear. Its a 350cc with the five speed clutchless manual, in other words nothing special. Oh, and it has that full time four wheel drive (actually 3wd) that is heavily overrated. I was wanting to know, is there anything about that engine i need to know before i attempt to rebuild it? Is it finicky in any way? Any certain parts to use and not to use? This four wheeler has had a very rough life, im almost tempted to save all the good and rebuildable parts and haul off the rest. Any advice and info will be greatly appreciated, thanks
  22. I have scored a 1999 bayou 300 for free. It has been setting for years (2) but it was too good to pass up. I have found the usual problems, dirty tank ,clogged pitcock, gummed up carb. etc. I also noticed a oil leak. I lifted the front of the quad up high so I could get a good look at what is going on. I wiped down the case and found something im not sure about. I found a hole in the case at the front and down low. It does not look like it was hit or damaged from riding. The hole is about the width of a penny and about half an inch long, it is located where the case halfs are put together. I thought it could be a vent of some kind but to me it seems to be to low. It would get full of mud and water. I haven't put any money into the quad yet so now is the time to answer this question. Thanks for any help.
  23. i have an 06 rancher 350 full time 4x4, no range select or 2wd option. i also have an 06 rancher 350 2wd, they both have the 5 speed transmission. the engine is completely wore out on the 4x4, the 2 wd runs great, at this moment i cant afford to rebuild the engine, can i take the engine off the 2wd and put it on the 4x4? the front cover on the 2wd does not have a spot for the front driveshaft to come out
  24. I received a recall back in late 2007 (service bulletin R-07-07) regarding an engine mount failure that causes the engine and transmission to become misaligned and cause the drive belt to wear abnormally. Well, being the procrastinator that I am, I missed the warranty period. When the first belt went out i requested the dealer to install the recall but they failed to find it and I did not have my paperwork (recall) with me. My drive belt failed again this weekend 2 years to the day from the previous one and other friends Rangers appear to get much more time/mileage out of their belts. Questions: is there an easy way to check to see if the mount is broken and is the frequency of replacing a belt every 2 years (no hard use of the ranger, pretty much a family truckster)? Thanks!
  25. Bombardier, Trax Max, 2003 Having problem with engine idle. Have to run higher RPM to keep it from dieing. Sometimes after running for half hour or so problem gets better, sometimes it doesn't. It just doesn't seem to be running right at low speeds. Only has 250 miles. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks
