About Me

My Garage

  1. Is it possible to put a motor from a big bear 350 into a timberwolf? Reason I ask is that I have a timberwolf with a bit of a rod knock, and I have big bear with a bad rear end and axle with a good motor. So, is it possible?
  2. I got a 1994 yamaha timberwolf that 2 years ago i bought put carb on off a parts one had it running but not the best so i rebuilt the carb seemed to run good then i left it sit i wanted to ride it so,i took carb apart to clean it looked good had it running but wouldn't idle not a big deal then it died so i gave up on now trying to start wont do anything i checked spark looks good, has great compression and its getting gas i sprayed starter fluid in it and it still wont do anything what the heck could be wrong?
  3. Got a question and hopefully find some help. I have a 95 Timberwolf 250 that I picked up and it didnt want to idle. I have rebuild the carb with new kit replacing all the jets and float seat. Blew out the ports with the air compressor after I soaked the carb and cleaned the ports with a fine piece of wire and it still wont idle on its own. Has new air filter. I had it running and sprayed around the carb and carb joint and didnt get a rapid acceleration as if I had a leak. I read somewhere how the standard jets are like a number #40 and people have replaced them with a bigger jet. I called the local dealer here and they said they cant order jets and was wondering if this could be the problem and if so where can you order them at. Any info/help is highly appreciated. Sorry for being so long, just want to get as much info out as I can.
  4. I have a 94 Yamaha Timberwolf 250 4x4. I have no fire to the ignition switch, no nutral light, head lights, or tail light I can jump across the selinoid and start it. I put on a new solinoid. The neutral light comes on,while running, but dims when you give it throttle. Would this be a relay, not letting fire go to the key switch? If so, could someone post diagram from a manual, on how to test the relays? Thanks for any help Ron
  5. I have a 1994 Yamaha Timberwolf 4x4. The electric start button worked fine when i was out hunting in the early hours of Sunday but in the evening all i was getting was a click click click when i pushed the starter button. Pull starting, it fires up no problem. I removed the battery and one of the cells was half empty so i topped it up and charged. Still goes click after i put the battery back in it. Posts are clean too. I heard that the starter brushes can be replaced. Thanx for the help guys. Gary
  6. I have a timberwolf that I love. It sat and the carb got gel from this wonderful ethanol. I cleaned it and put a new kit in it. it always started right off. now it cranks forever before it hits and then it will not idle. set according to instructions 23mm float, 4th notch on the pin, 1 1/2 turns out on the AIS. I have tried tweeking all of these some but nothing seems to make a difference. The biggest problem is that I got it back out because the wife has claimed this bike and now it will not run for her. Any help would sure get me out of a bind.
  7. Alright so excuse the ignorance but this is my first carb break down. Got it broke down and cleaned good. But now my problem. I am not sure where to start on adjusting my jets and air fuel mix. Any help on factory settings as a starting point would be great. I have a general knowledge of how it functions and terminology I just need to know where to start
  8. Please help i am currently a new owner of a very unloved quad owned by my recently deceased father in law. i have no idea of the year model but it has both an electirc start and a pull start. the electirc start doesnt work i have got a new battery and new plug but still nothing. im not a huge mechanical person but if i can get some help it would be greatly apreciated. thanks
  9. I have a 1994 Yamaha Timberwolf that has been a strong running machine until recently. This past year I replaced the pulsar coil which resolved a prior problem I was having. After running for several weeks without a hitch, I one day went out to start it and it would not. The starter motor is turning but it does not engage the engine. Can anyone suggest a remedy to get it running again? I have gone over the whole electrical system while in the process of correcting the pulsar coil problem. I believe where I hear the starter motor turning the problem lies elsewhere; I think.
  10. Hi i have a 94 Timberwolf 4x4. I got it at the beginning of the summer and it ran great all summer apart for an idling issue. I looked into it and i had oil in my air box and when i checked the dip stick it looks like it was overfllled. I took some oil out of the motor jumped on the bike and put it in gear.. nothing.. it runs great but wont drive. i tried it again off the bike and it drove a few feet but once i gave it any kind of power it would act like it was in neutral even though i know it wasnt. i tried cycling the gears and in reverse but i wasnt getting anywhere. it acts like it is going into gear and cycling through them but i cant get power to the wheels. i tried taking more oil out of it and adding new oil to the bike and it seemed to make it feel like it was shifting into drive or reverse easier but it still wont drive.. i talked to the guy that does small engine work in my town (although he is always booked up for 3 months at a time) so i didnt bring it in yet but he said something about some locking pin that seems to break on these models that would actually keep it from engaging into gear.. its located on the inside of the lever that you push forward for drive or backwards for reverse (i think this may not be the problem since i did have it moving somewat with no weight on the bike). any ideas?
  11. Hey everyone, I'm new here but stumbled upon the site and I will be posting in the future!! I just recently bought this four wheeler and it was my first atv purchase. I got a pretty good deal as it just needed some TLC and I'm a student on a budget. I really need some help with my carb and I am completely stumped. I bought a rebuild kit because the needle valve was leaking by when the engine was off and causing it to overflow. I rebuilt the whole carb, put it back on and the thing was idling high. Found out later this was because I had the throttle hooked up wrong but I got that corrected. I thought something was wrong with the carb itself so I broke it down and went back through it. The one piece I hadn't changed was the "main nozzle" as it's called on the parts diagram. The throttle needle goes through this before it goes to the jet tube. Well I messed up the new one trying to install it because it would seat into the carb good and ended up having to put the old one back in it. It was a little messed up where I had to drive it out, but just slightly and worked with it for a few and got it back right. I got everything right and put the carb back on and now I'm having a big problem... I cannot get the thing to take any fuel. It will barely idle and if I give it any throttle at all it cuts off. I have taken it off and cleaned it 5 times, made sure the pilot screw was adjusted out to 1 1/4 turns, and it had the correct float height (21-22mm). Also it appears the bowl is getting a decent amount of fuel because every time I take it off and some fuel leaks out of the vent tube there is still a lot of fuel in the bowl. So now I'm just confused and don't know where to turn next... Sorry for all the details but I just wanted to give someone enough info to possible help me! Even if you can't I would appreciate if you could direct me to someone who possibly can! I would appreciate any advice at all!! Thanks again.
  12. Hi all, I am posting this hoping that someone has seen it before and knows of a solution. TIA for any help. I had to change my pickup coil and now I have an oil leak between the engine and a stator cover. I tried fixing it 3 times by replacing gasket, replacing gasket and using the right stuff sealer in addition to the gasket. Still leaking oil. The last time I went in I thought that it may be leaking where the wire harness comes out. I used lots of right stuff around it to seal it but still no luck. Seems like it is leaking somewhere between the wire harness and the right bottom bolt (it collects on the bottom of that bolt and then drips but it looks like it originates higher up the cover. Thanks again for any help. Kafel
  13. I have 98 Yamaha 250 Timberwolf 4 by 4 and had no brakes, changed out shoes and drum/hub and still have very little brake whats the deal with these as the front are the same issue Is there a way to change to disc brakes ? Larryr
  14. got it fix but is it a common problem on old yammies?
  15. Hello, having an issue with the drivetrain on my buddies atv. We've replaced the primary, and secondary clutches. It starts fine, runs good, put it in gear, and nothing happens. Won't move forward, or backwards. When we jack up the rear end the tires spin, go thru all the gears, but when there is any resistance (sitting on the ground), it won't move........is it a drive shaft issue, or a rear end issue. Any help with this issue, would be greatly appreciated !!!!!
  16. ok here goes, my son took his 98 timberwolf 250 2x4 mudding and wound up in stuck in a hole with only handlebars and top of seat visible. so after pulling it out with a truck I got it home to find that it was hydro locked. started with the rear end, disassembled cleaned reassembled and new fluid. roles great. now for the problem. drained the oil/water from crankcase, pulled the spark plug and gave the rope a pull and shot water out of the cylinder. put new oil in along with motor flush and a new plug. the plan was to flush the motor 3 or 4 times to get remaining water out and figured it would be good to go. however, no start electric or pull rope. have popped all connectors apart and dried them, swapped out coil pack, disassembled carb, cleaned and replaced, it is getting spark and fuel. where should I go from here. cant seem to figure out why it wont start. I did almost start 1 or 2 time but just wouldn't stay running. please help im at my wits end.
  17. My daughter put it into gear while off and cold then I couldn't get it out of first. After alot of rocking it I finally got it into neutral and cranked. Then it wouldn't go into gear. The shifter feels like it is cycling into the gears (neutral light goes out too) but no hint of engagement. Any ideas? I'm going to open it up next week when I have time.
  18. I charged my battery on a 87 yamaha timberwolf 250 and left the key on like a dummy. Now that i have a battery that is fully charged i have nothing when i hit the start button. I can jump the stator and have spark but dose not turn over fast enough for it to start, I have no lights or anhything. I checked for fuse but the is no inline fuse someone chopped it out and spliced it. I used to turn the key and have the neutral light on. But no light and when i hit the start button i get nothing. What could my issue be?
  19. I charged my battery on a 87 yamaha timberwolf 250 and left the key on like a dummy. Now that i have a battery that is fully charged i have nothing when i hit the start button. 22. Hi folks, I am new to this forum and signed up hoping to get some advice as to what the problem is with the electrics on my timberwolf. The quad is a 2000 4x4 model, just bought it on the cheap a few weeks ago with electric start and lights not working. The starter makes no noise and no attempt to start whatsoever when the button is pushed and the lights dont work at all. It has a battery that has charge in it, so dont know why it wont just run off the battery, could it be a fuse? I saw a thread on here about electric start not working on a timberwolf, I got some info from that but think this problem may be different so thought I'd make my own thread. Any advice would be appreciated Cheers
  23. Noticed it this morning, Was -1 out, Started it with choke half way open, Fired right up second crank via electric starter. Shed was filling with not exhaust but oil/smoke, thought nothing of it at the time, Fast forward to later today, Started it up after washing it, And got a big puff of smoke from the bike, Checked the oil, Sure enough was down about half a quart, Opened air box, Oil sitting in the bottom of it (could have been from the prefilter though but there was an oilish trail from the intake tube which the breather connects to) Breather tube has milky white oil (I know it means water) Any ideas or help would be apreachiated, It has great compression which strikes me as odd considering its used half a quart of oil in about 5 hours run time (Have a hour meter)
  24. This has me puzzled the ATV wouldn't fire so put a new plug on it still wouldn't fire check all plugins on coil, cdi box cleaned and plugged back in tried starting it still nothing no fire at the plug. OK here's where it gets weird we pulled it with another ATV to pull start it and it runs any ideas is it the pickup coil, cdi box etc any ideas would be greatly appreciated and it will start fine with the button after you pull start it weird
  25. I recently picked up a1993 Timberwolf 250 4x4. I have 2 questions about it. First, I noticed that I don’t have a lot of torque/power in 1st gear. I do have significant power in reverse thought. Reverse will almost toss you off the bike if you goose it, but 1st gear does not. The previous owner plowed with it. Could the clutch be worn or something? I would think if the clutch was worn reverse would act the same. I’m just thinking that1st and reverse should have about the same torque/power. I plan to plow snow with it also, and I’m wondering if it has enough power to do so. Second question. If I’m on a slight hill facing down and stop, the bike always stalls out. It idols great when you first start it up and then it will chug a little when warm. I turned up the idol screw a bit, but I don’t like it idling too fast. Any idea why it stalls out facing downhill? Thanks, Ray
