My first quad and I have a problem. I have a Kawasaki Bayou 300 1997. When I start it. It will go on high idle for about ten seconds before it goes down to low idle. It does this even when I don't touch the throttle or the choke. Also, when I give it some throttle and let go. It will come back to fast idle for about ten seconds before it comes down to slow idle. Therefore I have to wait for it to slow up before I can shift. The throttle linkage drops right back to the stop on the carb buy the rpms stay up for a while. If you have any ideas what might be wrong please let me know. thank you Fred

Have had the carb apart twice now and can"t find any obvious problems. but if I leave the fuel on it floods the float bowl and leaks out the overflow. What should I be checking?

I just rode my klf 300 all day yesterday, and today when i went to unload it it would not start. When i took the plug out to check for spark it only produced a very faint weak looking spark and it was not consistant with rolling over, is this from a bad ignition coil or could it just be a loose conection somewhere?

been acting up for a couple weeks.running fine then dies,no spark at plug.wait few minutes start up again runs for maybe hours.also sometimes it will run great then it starts losing rpm.will not wind up to higher rpms then it will pickup and go for awhile.well now there is no spark any time ,nothing....

Got a good deal on an 89 bayou 300. Couple questions. First is in the picture I have posted. Note the two wires at the bottom of the pic (white and black/yellow). They were not hooked up to anything and Im not sure if they are supposed to go to the battery or somewhere else and what they are for. Second question is I had the carb apart for a cleaning. The vaccum operated slide has a spring under the cap with a plastic clip that goes inside the spring. Is there a proper location inside the spring for that clip. Right now it is just below half way inside the spring. It runs alright but keeps fouling the plug. Pulled the plug off, cleaned it and dried it off and it starts back up but not sure how long before itll do it again, last time it was about 20 minutes of riding and it bogged out and wouldnt start.

I am having what I think is ignition problems. My 1994 Bayou 300 seems to flood very easy when starting. At first I thought it was a carb problem but while testing the spart I noticed that there is no spark while the engine is turning over. When you let off of the ignition swith there is one spark. But only when you let off of the ignition switch. It has a new coil, plug wire, and plug. Any ideas? I dont know if it is the ignition box, or maybe the ignition switch. Any help would be appreciated

Ok here is what happened. I notice a four wheeler at sitting in the weeds at my moms house.she said it had been there about a year and that she got tired of messing with it and told me to take it. i cleaned up the carb real good (it was pretty nasty) and put it back on, cleaned out the gas tank , put some gas in it. i was surprised but it started and ran fairly well. i rode it a few times, never for very long and then my little girl lost the key to it. since i couldn't find it i decided to just use a toggle switch and bypass ignition. when i got it hooked up for some reason i pushed the kill switch on the handlebar to off. when i did that i heard a pop which turned out to be the fuse. slid that switch back over, replaced the fuse, and tried to start it but no luck. It had been running good enough that it would start first pull with the rope. now it is not getting any fire to the plug. Does anybody know where i need to start troubleshooting the issue or why it blew the fuse. Any help will be appreciated.

Hey guy and gals I'm a new-be here an just need a lot of help So please forgive me if I'm doing this wrong! First off My name is Rob and thanks for having me here you'll. I just acquired a 1997 farm hand bayou 300 4x4 that is in need of a lot of TLC I traded the fella even up for and old Yamaha street bike I had about $850 into that ran good and did not leak or burn oil but still needed many minor things like brake worked seat and so on So about the Bayou-it runs starts right up and all but is missing some things like the front and rear racks clutch lever and small plastic cover in front of handle bars My issue is that the fella said he put new piston & rings in it about a week ago and checked out the clutches like I said it runs and I know I should have taken more time to check everything out so when I got it home I found out there was no air breather and I can't see how one would have even fit on there the way the carb is so close to the inner frame rail under the seat on it and it started leaking oil pretty bad from the clutch cover (it was clean oil though light in color) The quad is not bad lookin and I can weld up some racks for it but I really need a service manual for this old work horse!!!!! I have no issue following directions other than sometimes giving my own creative touches LOL ANY HELP WOULD BE SO MUCH APPRECIATED THANK YOU AND HAVE A BLESSED DAY ROB

I bought a 96 bayou 300 4x4 would like a little more clearance underneath as i plan to use this to plow this winter for a few people. the problem is that with the plow on i cannot load the atv on my own as the mount area of the push bars catches on my tailgait. Would a high lifter lift and wheel spacers to maintain the width be a good idea or a bad idea? let me know as i have never used either and this is my first Utility atv. thanks I have heard about problems with lifts and cv boots being a problem is this true?

Hello everyone, I have a new to me 86 Bayou 300 that I just bought last night to get around the property. It wouldn't start when I bought it but it did turn over with starting fluid, PO said the carb neeeded cleaned. I cleaned the carb today but need to get the choke wired up as it was not wired up when purchased. I'm hoping one of you can help me get this choke wired up. Coming from the carb it has 2 wires. 1 is yellow and 1 is black. The PO said I needed to ground one and put the other one on a switch. Should I do it this way or is there another/better way to do it? I'd really appreciate any help I could get!! Thanks in advance!

I have a 1999 bayou 300 4x4 that backfires through the carburetor. It only starts doing so after warming up for about a minute...till then you can rev the motor with no problem but after it warms up a little it will not rev and bogs down and backfires through the carburetor and exhaust. It has a new stator, pick up coil and carburetor has been rebuilt. Any help would be appreciated.

Bought this bike wouldnt start gas pouring out of the carb and no spark. So after rebuilding the carb and repairing some burnt wires to the stator she fired over. Ran her for all last year. She puked out again. No spark again. Determined that the ignitor went. Replaced the ignitor and she fired back up again. So changed the oil and filter to get ready for the winter and was riding an puked again. Now I can only get it to start intermittantly after blowing out the spark plug and adjusting the gap. It will run for a bit then puke again. What I found out completly on accident is that if I leave the plug wire off a little so that the metal isn't touching inside but the rubber holds it on it will fire and run this way. But if i push it on all the way it doesn't start at all. Is my plug bad? Or the wire boot? I'm pulling my hair out here. You can hit it from a dead cold and it will fire right over but as soon as you drive it a bit it pukes. Have to pull the plug wire off a bit to get it to fire again. This seems weird. I'm not great with quads its my first one I'm more experienced with bikes. Is this indicating the resistor in the boot is bad? Help Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Bought 4 wheeler for kids. Used to run and soon as it was put in gear it died. I have put new carburater, new plug and battery. The neutral light won't come on. I replaced the solenoid, then the positive battery cable and today put new relay assembly on. Still no neutral light. Not getting any juice and I don't know why.

I recently bought this quad. When I shift into gear it wants to take off on me or stall if I hold the brake. I can get it moving if I use the shifter like a clutch and let it down easy. I have manual and adjusted clutch but it seems to be all or nothing meaning it won't go at all. What is my next move? New clutch? Any ideas?

I hope someone can help with this problem. When trying to start the ATV after it has been sitting for as little as overnight, it has a VERY difficult time starting. The starter motor is fine, tested within specs. Once the motor has started, you can let it run for a minute or so, shut it off, and it fires right back up. If I run it for about 500 yds and turn it off for an hour, it will start right back up. It just seems that overnight or longer creates this starting issue. Air temperature doesn't affect this. I've replaced the carburetor, a new battery, & a new spark plug. All wires related to starting were tested and were within specs. I thought maybe it was an issue with some electronics that get heated by the motor and function properly, so I put a hair dryer to different components to heat them up to see if that fixed, no joy. I've been told that these are usually hard to start, but this is almost impossible and I"m afraid I'm wearing out the starter motor. I don't understand why once it starts I can turn it off immediately and it'll fire back up. Has anyone had a similar experience or can recommend next steps, either testing or part replacement? Thanks.

Hello everyone! I would like to excuse myself in advance, as I am not very smart in mechanics... So, bear with me. Last year my girlfriend gave me a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 300, as she was moving and fourwheelers werent allowed in city limits. Recently, I have run into a little problem. My fourwheeler will idle just fine for a bit, but whenever I give it any throttle, it will kill the motor or nearly kill it. Eventually, if it idles too long, the motor dies. Im not sure why its doing this. My dad thinks it is the fuel filter, but he also isnt familiar with small engines. When I start my fourwheeler, I generally let it idle for about 4-6 minutes. It also never has needed to be choked to be started really, just a little tap on the throttle. Im not sure what it is, and need opinions. Thanks!
