About Me

My Garage

  1. I thought I would make a quick "How-to" on setting wheel alignment since I was flipping my tie rod ends and I was going to have to re-align the wheels anyways. Here's some of the tools you will need... 1.) Start with the ATV on a smooth and level surface, like a cement garage floor or driveway. 2.)Center up (Eyeball It) the handle bars and lock them into place with 2 ratchet straps, one on each side of handle bars. This of course prevents them from moving when your adjusting the tie-rods. 3.) Place two Jack Stands approximately 2 feet in front of the atv even with the outside edge of the two front wheels. 4.) Wrap a length of string all the way around the ATV and Jack Stands, Start and end at the rear hitch. Make sure the string is the same height from the ground on all 4 wheels. I like to attach a few elastic bands to both ends of the string before attaching the string to the hitch. This makes it easier to adjust the strings when moving the Jack Stands. 4.) Break lose the inner and outer tie-rod nuts. NOTE! Make sure you use 2 wrenches, one on the nut and one on the ball joint. Damage can occur by only using one wrench. 5.) Adjust the string by moving the Jack Stands in or out untill the string just touches both of the side surfaces of the rear tires on each side of the ATV. This will take some time to get it right but it needs to be done! Check manufacturers wheel alignment specifications on your specific make and model before you adjust any components. For this wheel alignment I'm using the Polaris Specs which seems to be a common setting. Polaris - The recommended toe alignment is 1/8″ to 1/4″ toe out. This is a total amount, not per wheel. 6.) On the front rim, measure the distance from the string to the rim at the front and rear edges of the rim. The rear measurement should be 1/16″ - 1/8″ (.2 to .3 cm) more than the front measurement. 7.) If an adjustment is necessary, Turn the tie rod itself with a wrench or your hand in small increments. It doesn't take much to move the tire a long way, so go slow. Keep re-checking your measurement's until you have a 1/16″ - 1/8″ differance to the string. 6.) Once your satisfied that you have the correct "Toe Out" measurements you can tighten up the inner and outter tie-rod nuts on both sides. AGAIN...make sure to use 2 wrenches. 7.) Now take your ATV for a test drive to test your adjustments. If it still pulls one way or the other, just repeat the above steps to tweek the adjustments again utill your happy. The whole process only takes about 15-20 min.
  2. I bought a 96 bayou 300 4x4 would like a little more clearance underneath as i plan to use this to plow this winter for a few people. the problem is that with the plow on i cannot load the atv on my own as the mount area of the push bars catches on my tailgait. Would a high lifter lift and wheel spacers to maintain the width be a good idea or a bad idea? let me know as i have never used either and this is my first Utility atv. thanks I have heard about problems with lifts and cv boots being a problem is this true?
  3. 6. when it has been threw deep water and then sets in freezing weather, the right front wheel locks up, can get it loose by putting it in four wheel to break it loose then off tot he trails but any idea where t look for the cause or the leak that is causing it to lock up must be getting water in somewhere on the break drum i think that it shouldnt.. any help would be appreciated..
  7. I have a project in the works and need pro advice and thoughts! No amatures, please! I have acquired 2 1990's quadrunners and am converting 1 of them into a low profile rock crawlin, single seat buggy! Here is my plan,Im gonna cut the frame in half just in front of the cylinder head and extend the front approx 2' to accomidate a seat in front of the motor/business end of the animal and lengthening the shaft to the front diff. I was also considering wheel spacers to make it a little more stable from side to side. Upon considering my options i noticed that if i turn the wheels inside out,i would gain the same space as if i would have bought the spacers w/o the expense. I want all the pro advice relative to the spacers you can come up with ,good and bad!ps the only difference is that the air valves will be on the inside of the wheel. thanx jim:goofy::idea:
  8. Can someone help me diagnose a wheel wobble? My left rear wheel wobbles. It does it on 2 different set of tires so I can say it is not the rim and I replaced the hub so its not that. What are my next steps in figuring it out or does someone already know Thanks in advance for any and all help Regina

  10. I have a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 400. Front left tire will not engage into 4 wheel drive. I took it apart and the armature plate was damaged so I put a new one in but still no 4 wheel drive. I have 3 wheel drive at the moment. I checked wiring, its okay from what I can tell. When its engaged in 4 wheel drive is the armature plate supposed to stick to the magnet? I can pull it off by hand, is it normal? Also, if anyone knows what reading I should get with ohms/continuity/resistance.

  20. Hello, I don't own this machine yet, however someone is willing to trade me their 2000 Polaris Xpedition but they say one wheel wont lock into 4 wheel drive. I looked around for a repair manual but cant seem to find one, is there any other models that use the same on-demand locking system? Or would anyone have an idea of what could be wrong so I can decide if the trade is worth it. I'm mechanically and electrically inclined and have room to work but I don't want to end up with a bad trade and have to put a large amount of hours and money into it.
  21. Hello... I recently bought a used 1997 yamaha kodiak 400 4x4 .. I cannot find no 4wd switch on it at all... I got the manual for it from someone on this site and it shows its on the drivers side handle bar where you give it gas but there is nothing there at all... so thought maybe it had been removed but there is no lose wiring no where that connected to anything there... so i been trying to figure out how to get from 2wd into 4wd but there is no switch to push on it as far as I can tell... and my neighber said the reason i could not pull the manual cable to start the atv is because you have to release compression with a nob are something before it will pull easy to start the atv? Sure would appreicate anyones thoughts on these two things thank you
  22. My Yamaha kodaik 450 4 wheel on commanded started to make a funny noise today it sounds like something scraping in the left front tire. on any surfaces in two wheel and fourwheel drive. the noise happens at random. i have taken the tire off and put it back on. and my hub is tight... i took the hub off and when i spin the wheel it builds up pressure and the makes the noise and then releases the pressure
