About Me

My Garage

  1. Hi, I'm having a serious issue with my 99 lakota. Earlier today I went to go for a ride and when I put it in gear it stalled out in gear for whatever reason, now it will not go back into neutral, when trying to get it out of gear a friend and myself pushed the quad back and fourth and I managed to get the gears to shift all the up to 5th but going back down it shifted really soft into 2nd and will not get to 1st or neutral. So I decided to tear apart the engine, I'm reading the Clymers manual to check for things that may be wrong, I'm thinking possibly the shifter and the star gear that shifts the gears might not be connecting correctly. to even look at that I have to remove both the primary and secondary clutches. The Clymers manual tells me to remove the primary by first removing the recoil starter and hold the rotor bolt to unscrew the clutch bolt. When I tried that the rotor bolt broke loose, so I decided to try to hold the rotor still and that is spinning. So now both of those ideas/methods have failed and I'm plum out of ideas on how to get that nut loose, then I'll have the same issue with the nut on the secondary clutch. According to Clymers the clutch nut is torqued to 107 ftlbs the only other thing I can think of is jamming the sprockets but thats not an option cause they will more than likely break a tooth or more. Anyone have any ideas on what I can try to do? The way it's looking now the bike is done Thanks
  2. Hey guys, Im new here but I recently Picked up a '99 Foreman 400 that apparently just had a top end rebuild. It blows white smoke like crazy and ticks/knocks and seems to follow the rpm's. I haven't done to much trouble shooting yet, It starts and runs like a champ and has good compression. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to where to go. Oh ya the top end rebuild the guy did was according to him he honed the cylinder and replaced the piston and rings, my fear is an ovaled cylinder?
  3. Hello Just signed up, as I've had a recurring problem, and need some help. To start the bike I have to put the choke on all the way and 4 squeezes on the gas, Then as I push the start, I slow squeeze the throttle about half way for it to catch....If I miss it, then it will take 5 mins of slowly finding the sweetspot on the choke in unison with some throttle squeezes. Then I have to to hold the throttle to keep the bike going, using the choke will stall it out. after about 3 mins of holding the throttle, I then can let it go, and it idles fine, and runs fine. If it sits for a few hours it's only slightly hard to start, but a few days of sitting, and it's a lot more work. Had the bike serviced they couldn't figure it out. They swapped peticock, plug, new gas, all new lines, new throttle, and cable. Said the carb was fine, and clean. New air filter, said fuel pump was fine, no leaks around carb boots, new battery, new rectifier. Ran some sea foam through it....Runs Great.....Just such a pain to start... Thanks
  4. Bought a new carberator for my 1999 Sportsman 500. Very excited when it finally started running right & then I put on the air box . . . dogs and can't use more than 1/2 throttle. I've torn it apart, rechecked timing, rechecked valve clearances, checked screw positioning in carb as well as several other little things (like spark plug, etc). This is very frustrating as everything is as it should be. Runs awesome without the air box! But as soon as it's put back on . . . it's back to junk! Very frustrating. Anyone with a suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Good morning all I am new to the forum and new to the world of ATVs. I recently purchased a 99 big bear 350 4x4 that has a few issues to be resolved. it started with the push button starter it would just click when the button was pushed to date I have replaced the solenoid with a Napa 4 wire setup (not sure if this is installed correctly) and replaced the older baterry with a AGM battery. after all of that it still clicks but the source of the click is a white plastic rectangular box with 2 wires going into it. i have 12.8 volts to the first post of the solenoid and nothing on the second post when the button is pushed. when the solenoid is jumped the starter engages. lastly i have no lights when the buggy is not running and when i hit the light switch there is also a click that happens. Thanks for any info anyone can provide I greatly appreciate the help. Flyman
  6. Morning Folks Ok so I have taken the front hubs apart everything is good and working fluids changed and full In 2 wheel drive the bike works great However in 4 wheel drive high I get a grinding clunking noise right near the foot pegs The universals are all brand new in the complete bike The problem just started after my last ride Sometimes I have to change the rpm to get the bike to go into gear in forward and reverse The bike doesn't make the grinding noise when I have the bike in 4 wheel driver low gear only in high gear Could the shifter need adjusting any help would be great Thanks for your time Oldcomet
  7. Just bought this quad and it is in pretty good shape. It is missing a small plastic piece right above the headlamp cover right in front of handle bars. Does anybody know where I can find this piece? Now the CV axle. The left inner CV boot is ripped and wheel hesitates when making a sharp turn in that direction. I am trying to find a replacement or a fix, but have been recieving different suggestions for the fix. First one was buy a replacement CV axle. Second said to that the inner was it's own build and that if you ought a CV axle it would only e a half shaft. Just confused and need some guidence. Thank you guys!
  8. Title says it all. When I researched part it shows it does not exist anymore, discontinued. What can I do to stop the leak? Is there somewhere else I should be looking for part? The leak is coming from where shifter goes through seal, not around outside of seal between case and seal. Thanks.
  9. My 1999 Sportsman 500 since new has had very few issues during the 16+ years I have owned it so it has been a fantastic machine! The problem showed up a number of months ago during hunting season and in essence once you start to ride it and then stop, it wants to continue to creep forward and makes it difficult to shift gears and there is a bit of grind when you do. Runs fantastic and seem to be no other problems with power to the wheels in 2WD/4WD so the only time you notice it is when you stop and especially if you need to change gears. I am looking for a starting point on where the problem could be. Appreciate any help! Craig
  10. bought this atv back in 2001 and in the lst few years it has only had a couple weeks of use per year.. the main reason is it has got cold blooded and wont start good.. have had 2 different qualified people rebuild carb to try and solve starting issues and it still isnt right.. according to the info i have found out here and other areas it has the x version carb in it which is no longer available,, i am looking to possibly replace the carb with something but dont know who made the original and do not know the model of a comparable carb,, the valves have been checked and it doesnt have alot hours on it.. the best way to start this thing is to put 2 fingers over the the top breather tub if you can get your hand in there and try to get it on the sweet spot with choke and start button or throttle lever.. so if any of you have some input on this head ache i am all ears thanks for your responses.. also the choke doesnt seem to do alot for it.. in the past i have had to runt he choke part open or closed to get it to run regular.. also have had it back fire big time on a couple early mourning runs tot he tree stand.. which is just what the doctor didnt order:)
  11. looking anyone who knows how to change shift characteristics by the spring holes
  12. when it has been threw deep water and then sets in freezing weather, the right front wheel locks up, can get it loose by putting it in four wheel to break it loose then off tot he trails but any idea where t look for the cause or the leak that is causing it to lock up must be getting water in somewhere on the break drum i think that it shouldnt.. any help would be appreciated..
  13. Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a breeze for my son, it's in great shape and they want $800 for it. Would this be a good starter atv for him? I had a warrior and banchee back in the day. But he wants something to ride. He is 95 lbs and as tall as most 11year olds. But I don't want to get another Chinese made unit that goes out. Would this be a good unit for the price? Thanks Ryan
  14. This is my first time posting here so bare with me, I will do my best explaining my issue. I own a 1999 Suzuki ltf 250 Quadrunner I bought off the showroom floor in 1999, and as we all know, over the years things need to be replaced, no matter how well we take care of them. Last year The four wheeler was burning really rich and after it got hot it shut down and was hard to start back up, damn thing just would not idle. Lucky for me I have a father-in-law that has done nothing but port and polish heads, By hand I might add, no CNC machining involved, for 50 + years and he did his magic on mine, honed and seated the valves, valve guides, resurfaced the head, the whole nine yards. After reassembly and a little valve adjustment, this thing ran better than new and purrs and mean really purrs. Here is my latest issue, I replaced the battery the same time this work took place and also invested in a battery tender, best thing ever. Last week i started the bike and noticed a little hesitation in the starter but it did start, I pulled it up to the garage just to look it over and do some general maintenance, I plugged in the tender and was unable to get to it until today, and now all it does is click... I checked the battery voltage and tightened the terminal screws, I turned on the bike and checked the voltage while trying to start it, no voltage drop still read 13.69 VDC. Traced the wire to the starter solenoid, same thing, from solenoid to starter, the voltage, with the starter button pushed in was 10.++ Does this mean the solenoid is bad??? I typically trouble shoot and diagnose these things on my own, I have been for years, Im just tiered now and want to know the problem so I can just order and replace the part I need, so I can have this thing for hunting season, any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
  15. Can someone help me diagnose a wheel wobble? My left rear wheel wobbles. It does it on 2 different set of tires so I can say it is not the rim and I replaced the hub so its not that. What are my next steps in figuring it out or does someone already know Thanks in advance for any and all help Regina
  16. hello im having trouble getting this quad to start have great spark and compression. i have cleaned entire carb. im getting gas in the air box and i had the machine backfire threw carb once any advice or ideas will be greatly appriciated thanks
  17. Just bought a 99 Magnum 500. Needs quite a bit of work. Seems like every other manual is on the site, but can't find one for a 99 Magnum. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks The http://www.powersportresource.com/ used to have it, but the link is dead now.
  18. My 1999 500 Sportsman runs but has no power and backfires through the carb. Doesn't even have enough power to get up the ramps to the bed of my truck. Has new carb. Engine was rebuilt but I don't know if everything was new when they rebuilt it.
  19. Something broke in the drive assembly. Quad still moves forward and reverse. Appears only the front left(while sitting on seat) wheel has power to it. My question is where do I start? Tools and service manual in hand. HELP!
  20. Does a 1999 arctic cat 250 2x4 have a brake light? Reason I ask is I just got one and the brake light wasn't working. I traced the brake switch wire from the hand brake and its not plugged into the harness not could I find a place to plug it into. I'm wondering if it had a brake light or maybe the harness that it plugs into maybe had been ripped off by previous owner. Any help is appreciated.
  21. So I have oil that comes out of out a small crack next to one of the top bolts. Anyone know a way to seal this or fix it without buying a whole new cylinder head? I was hoping there was something I could put on the crack to seal it or I know a welder that could just weld over it?? Thanks again, Keith
  22. I recently picked up a 99 Big bear 350 2x4 and was going to add a winch. It looks as though I'll need to custom make something to mount on frame. I bought the Badlands 2000 and winch plate, but will still need some some sort of mod to get it to work in the front. Anyone have any pics of a similar model big bear with a front winch mount to give me more ideas? Anyone have welding skills and live close to Frisco ,TX and want to come by and help out? Thanks,
  23. Had the opportunity to buy a 1999 King Quad really cheap with snow plow included. Has 2000 miles on it. Im used to having Hondas and i am not familiar with Suzuki at all. Where should the choke be when running? I runs with the choke lever toward the ground but stalls when coming to the end of pushing a pile of snow.
  24. I have a 1999 Honda 300 TRX, just replaced spark plug and still no start/no spark - someone mentioned to replace the coil and/or cdi? is that corrrect? if so do i need to remove front fender & front bracket to do this? Thanks!
