  1. Is there some way to adjust the choke cable on these quads? Wont hit a lick with cable in .You can pull choke cable out of the carb putyour finger over the hole and it will fire rite up.LEt your finger off and it will idle high .Put your finger back over the hole and it dies .I have put a new kit in the carb and everythng was done to factory spec .But jst cant figure out whats up with the choke .Any info would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
  2. Having a strange issue with the headlights on my Kodiak. Noticed there are no high beams, and when I switch back to low beam the lights stay off. The low beams will come on, only if I go from off to low. This is what I have going on: From Off to Low - Lights Work From Low to High - No lights From High to Low - No Lights Back to Off and to low - Lights work again. Just curious if anyone has had a similar issue, or where I should start troubleshooting.
  3. I'm working on my brothers' 2002 Suzuki Vinson 500 . It sat for a few years before I got into it. I'm concentrating on the carb - I replaced orings, needle, etc. and soaked jets, bowl and anything that I could get off the carb that the solution wouldn't eat. I also removed the tank and flushed it with hot water - it's clean. The gas cap innards rusted away and the tank had a lot of rust and water in it before I cleaned it. I replaced the gas cap and installed a new fuel valve because the screens were broken in the old one. The bike will run but spits and sputters and backfires. If you "open it up" it falls on its face and stalls - but starts right up. Here is a link to an exploded view of the carb: Ohio Honda Yamaha Motorcycle ATV Dealer - J & J Motors - Kawasaki Suzuki Scooter Utility vehicle, parts, accessories, apparel Can anyone point me in the direction of the problem? It may still be a "clean carb parts issue" . My problem is that the parts list doesn't identify the parts to a degree that I understand. If you said" look at the pilot jet", I'm not sure which jet that would be....See what I mean? It'll run very good if I remove the air filter and cover the opening with my hand and part my fingers a little for the air to get in. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jim
  4. Ok here is what happened. I notice a four wheeler at sitting in the weeds at my moms house.she said it had been there about a year and that she got tired of messing with it and told me to take it. i cleaned up the carb real good (it was pretty nasty) and put it back on, cleaned out the gas tank , put some gas in it. i was surprised but it started and ran fairly well. i rode it a few times, never for very long and then my little girl lost the key to it. since i couldn't find it i decided to just use a toggle switch and bypass ignition. when i got it hooked up for some reason i pushed the kill switch on the handlebar to off. when i did that i heard a pop which turned out to be the fuse. slid that switch back over, replaced the fuse, and tried to start it but no luck. It had been running good enough that it would start first pull with the rope. now it is not getting any fire to the plug. Does anybody know where i need to start troubleshooting the issue or why it blew the fuse. Any help will be appreciated.
  5. can someone tell me what could be the problem if the electric start doesn't turn the motor over but sparkplug fires like crazy but the pull rope turns the motor but no fire on spark plug. thanks for any advice in advance . cbbubby78
  6. Hey everyone. I have been poking around this site for awhile and I am in need of yalls assistance. I have a 06 350 bruin. It has sat in my parents garage for about 2 years and was never started. I got it home, put fresh fuel and plug in it. It would start and run great but it wouldn't idle unless choke was on. Also when you were moving and let off the throttle it would make a pop noise down by the carb area. I thought it was a dirty carb so I sprayed some carb cleaner in it and didn't help. I removed the carb, tore it down and cleaned it. I removed the jets spraying carb cleaner and compressed air thru them. I removed the float as well and cleaned. I drilled out the plug that covers the air/fuel mixture screw. I read where the spec is two turns from fully seated. So that is where I set it at. Before I did that, I removed the screw and spring and cleaned that bore out as well. I reassembled and now I have issues. It is very hard to start, choke or no choke, and when you do get it started, you have to hold the throttle at 3/4 way to keep it running. It will run very rough at 3/4 as well. With the air filter off, while trying to start, it is blowing a lot of fuel back out into the air filter and the plug is getting fuel fouled very bad. I removed the carb again thinking I messed something up or got the float stuck but everything looked fine. I put the carb back on the second time and it didn't change a thing. I assume its something I did since its not running like it did before I tore down the carb. Can anyone please help? Thanks a lot.
  7. Hello, well back to where I was last year with this carb. Took my 250 to the mountains for the first time this year and blue smoke, too much gas again. I can't believe that this carb gives me this much trouble. Seems like the choke is stuck but the cable moves freely. Anyone else ever experience this issue? Do you think a new choke cable would maybe resolve this?http://www.quadcrazy.com/atvforum/images/smilies/arghh.gif OK it was the choke. Put on all new cable and plunger and she is running 100% again. So now the question is, is the carb getting worn out where the plunger needle goes in the small hole and when I use the choke the needle end doesn't get lined back up with the hole?? We'll see how it runs and now that I know what the issue is I can always pull the choke plunger out and reinstall if I start having this issue again.
  8. I have a 2003 predator 500 that is a real pain to get started when cold. If I can get it started at all. It has spark, is getting fuel, and cranks like normal. I have disassembled and cleaned the carb. Have also tried switching out the carb. No noticeable change in attempting to start. Have swapped out spark plug and made sure the gap is set correctly. Have looked at fuel pump and appears to be in working order. Have taken to air tube off and noticed a lot of back pressure out of carb. Does anyone have any advise for me or come across the same symptoms?
  9. Good morning all I am new to the forum and new to the world of ATVs. I recently purchased a 99 big bear 350 4x4 that has a few issues to be resolved. it started with the push button starter it would just click when the button was pushed to date I have replaced the solenoid with a Napa 4 wire setup (not sure if this is installed correctly) and replaced the older baterry with a AGM battery. after all of that it still clicks but the source of the click is a white plastic rectangular box with 2 wires going into it. i have 12.8 volts to the first post of the solenoid and nothing on the second post when the button is pushed. when the solenoid is jumped the starter engages. lastly i have no lights when the buggy is not running and when i hit the light switch there is also a click that happens. Thanks for any info anyone can provide I greatly appreciate the help. Flyman
  10. I am about at my wits end. Took the 250 back to the dealer repair shop AGAIN. Had it in there two months ago for a bad smoking issue. I thought it was to much fuel and washing the oil off the cylinder and burning it. They said it was the head. So I purchased new valves, valve guides, oil seals and had the head professionally done. So $225 later I had a great looking head. Well while I had the ATV apart this far I also got new rings for the piston. Mic'd everything out and everything was in spec. Put it back together and seemed like it smoked a little at the house (5000 feet above sea level). Took it to the mountains (9000 feet above seal level) for Sept. bear hunting and couldn't use it. Smoked worse than before and couldn't run it past half throttle or it would flood itself out. So brought it back home and it is back at the shop again. I say it is something in the carb that isn't set right or wrong jet????????? Anyone have any other ideas that it could be?
  11. I have a badger 80 that seems to have had water in fuel, the carb is pitted bad, I am wondering if anyone knows where I can get a replacement carb cheap or if there is any carbs that i can retro fit since everywhere i look wants $85 for a carb on a $400 quad? Any input is greatly appreciated
  12. Hi all, I have an 86 motor 4 that has starter clutch issues. (YFM225) Because I cant afford to put much money into this old machine, I hope to get some guidance before spending more. (already spent too much!) I have replaced the starter clutch multiple times with used ones that are supposedly good. Each time it fixes the problem for a short time, and then it returns. Sometimes I have noticed the socket head cap screws have loosened. I clean and re-assemble using removable locktite and that seems to help, but still issues with the clutch itself. Any suggestions? Questions, is it maybe the small springs behind the rollers are weak? Regarding the surface on the flywheel that the rollers touch. I have noticed that most of the flywheels I have used do have small wear marks on them. I have smoothed them out using a small stone to the point you can barely feel them. Does this surface need to be perfect? Are clutches and flywheels matched. It seems that depending on which flywheel I use, the timing can vary slightly like its not quite firing at the right time, hard to start, etc. My theory is that there must be slight variances in the keyway location between flywheels. Is my theory correct? Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
  13. I have a 1989 LT 300 E 2WD Quad. I rebuilt the starter as the brushes were bad, it bench tested fine, but when installed the starter; motor runs but does not engaged the the starter gear?? TKS for any help in advance RJK
  14. Was driving in mud playin around heard fan come on obce then didnt hear it come on anymore drove up to house and it stalled , now i can start it and starts real easy but once warm it dies even if i turn up idle , i was threw alot of mud and water , was wondering if the fan not coming on will trigger a sensor or something and cause this , starts great runs ok till its warm then dies or screws around when i keep it running ....
  15. I recently bought this quad. When I shift into gear it wants to take off on me or stall if I hold the brake. I can get it moving if I use the shifter like a clutch and let it down easy. I have manual and adjusted clutch but it seems to be all or nothing meaning it won't go at all. What is my next move? New clutch? Any ideas?
  16. I hope someone can help with this problem. When trying to start the ATV after it has been sitting for as little as overnight, it has a VERY difficult time starting. The starter motor is fine, tested within specs. Once the motor has started, you can let it run for a minute or so, shut it off, and it fires right back up. If I run it for about 500 yds and turn it off for an hour, it will start right back up. It just seems that overnight or longer creates this starting issue. Air temperature doesn't affect this. I've replaced the carburetor, a new battery, & a new spark plug. All wires related to starting were tested and were within specs. I thought maybe it was an issue with some electronics that get heated by the motor and function properly, so I put a hair dryer to different components to heat them up to see if that fixed, no joy. I've been told that these are usually hard to start, but this is almost impossible and I"m afraid I'm wearing out the starter motor. I don't understand why once it starts I can turn it off immediately and it'll fire back up. Has anyone had a similar experience or can recommend next steps, either testing or part replacement? Thanks.
  17. Hey guys, I was just given a yamaha big bear 350 by my neighbor, and I need some guidance. This quad has definitely lived a hard life but I would like to breathe a little life back into it. It starts up and idles great, and shifts into first fine, but its having a really tough time getting into any gear higher than 1st. When I am able to shift it into a higher gear the shifter gets hung up until i push it back down with my foot. My plan as of now is just to change all the fluids, and adjust the clutch according to the manual and see if that helps at all. Any other ideas are very much appreciated. Also, I cant find a VIN# anywhere on the thing, but I think its a 1997. Its an "SE" 4x4 with the h/l/r selector right next to the engine.
  18. Gents, First off, I have spent a week browsing your Forum, but now I must join and find answers, please assist. Soon to be retired US Marine, I live in the woods of Maine, I purchased a used ATV, listed above. I have a Clymers Manual. ( uuhh not real easy to read with out my crayons and Pop-up pictures). When Purchased, I knew it needed work. This is a father son project ( he is 13), in parts, in the basement.. no brakes, electrical wire dis-allowed the electric starter to work, ( fixed easily) choke frozen, rear bearings shot, close to impossible to start, stop light brake switch electric broken, speedo cable broken. Description of work done: 1- new rear bearings-purchased "boss bearings" 2-new choke cable and assembly - was stuck in the carb, and cable was frozen 3-new rear bushings on suspension arms- were frozen/seized during the bearings removal 4-new front, rear breaks,- drums being turned this week at local machine shop 5-brake master cylinder-top screw being tapped out- .. was stripped and broken 6-miscilaniouse OEM parts and bolts ordered from Partzilla and Rockymoutnain parts- so far good fits: bushings, bushing bolts, air filter assembly, choke assemble, wheel brake cylinder: springs/gaskets bolts, master cylinder rebuild kit. to be fixed- ANY AND ALL Advice to all next steps: 1-Wheel Brake Cylinders to be rebuilt- cylinders in local machine shop being "honed" A- hints and suggestions ? I have new gaskets, bolts, rubber, and springs. OEM 2- I need a New Muffler Exhaust: Hard to find?? any ideas? 3- Speedo Cable assemby on order 4. MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION AND HELP: Carburator engine NOT starting: below is what I know to be true: a. reassembled carefully back in place after choke assembly was replaced b. checked ALL Fuel lines, steady streams ! c. Starter switch works- d. spark plug is not fouled, blue spark, damp. e. electric is working f. tried eather / quick start - NO catching of spark to make engine go "vroom" g. no visible oil or fuel leaks on engine head or crank case h. when inspecting air intake at filter, it appears the carb is shooting air back into the filter, NOT into the carb..?? this normal?? Well, I hope this didnt bore you, and you can provide some insight on all or any items? Help this Marine out please? Frankfort, Maine..USA

  21. Hello all!! New to this site, but a desperate call out for help to avoid high repair bill. A "friend" of mine who was drinking decided to take my 4wheeler for a ride. Needless to say, he didn't seem to understand the you have to press in the brake to change gears. Not HAPPY. Now my ride will only go into Park and H. WHAT parts should I be looking at replacing. I have not tore it apart yet, and looking for advice as where to even start. Any ideas are appreciated!!!! And before anyone asks, NO ONE rides my equipment at all. I have learned the hard way to take the keys out and OPPS i cant find the keys at the moment ( this excuse works!!).
  22. I just bought this 300 2wd and I don't know much about working on them. I have the service manual and the owners manual from online downloads but... Hoping I could get some help please: 1) Pretty sure I am just going to have to but a new carb but see what you all have to say. When it is cold I have to shoot some starter fluid on the air cleaner. Choke cable seems to be sticking and not working. Once the quad is warmed up I don't need any more starting fluid it will start on its own but the big issue is it will not idle. I have to keep giving it just a little bit of throttle. I took the carb off but could not get the choke cable out the carb and someone has already stripped the 4 heads on the screws holding the bowl on. Cheapest place to buy a carb? Any other ideas? 2) Shifts really hard through all gears. Pulling the shifter up with my foot is hard but when it shifts it wants to slam into gear and actually jerk the quad. If your going with a little bit of speed it wants to pull the front tires up a little. Any ideas? 3) Pulls to the right terrible. Tire pressure is good. Nothing looks physically bent, arms, t-rods nothing. If I adjust the t-rods should I turn the right side in toward the center of the quad to get it to pull more to the left to even it out? Thank you for your help. Tim
  23. okay so any help would be great. Can anyone tell me why my quad runs okay on reserve but when you turn gas to on it bogs down every time throttle is given. It also back fires when gas is on. I replaced the pet cock fuel line carb was cleaned and redone to resolve problem but still having issues. Any ideas?
  24. Hi. I sunk my 97 big bear in a water hole up o the seat. I drove it home after it being in a swamp. Drove it twice since and then it wouldn't start at all. I since drained the gas, oil twice, and changed the oil filter. also changed the spark plug and air filter. It fired up on two occasions only by the pullcord.(electric start has a grinding noise at first then it starts clicking noise). Ran o for about 20 minutes each, ran very high and wouldn't throttle back too much. Electric start did work before the water hole. any help would be great to get this thing started again!
  25. I have a 1996 Polaris Xplorer 4x4. It runs great in forward in both high and low range. It shifts and goes into reverse easily but when you give it throttle in reverse it just bogs down and back fires. Once bad enough to pop the exhaust pipe off the cylinder. Any ideas?
