  1. I recently had my 2000 xplorer 400 4x4 plastic completely off the machine. I just don’t recall seeing the “terminal board” anywhere on the machine. It’s the one where all the loose wire connections are made. Can anyone out there tell me exactly where to find that blasted board? You know I.e. like right, front; under the seat or maybe under a cover somewhere. I'm trying too hook up a 12v receptacle for accessories.
  2. Here's one for ya. Why won't my speedometer work? I've had this machine for a few months now and finally got it going, after replacing the piston and boring the jug to .020" over but would like to know if any of you guys have had problems with your speedo and possibly where to start looking. Is it a mechanical or electrical issue? Don't know where to start...
  3. Why can't I find an operator's manual for this machine? Seems like the 2 stickies above skip right over this machine. Can anyone help?
  4. Can anyone tell me what the significance of the holes are on the intake side of the piston. And does the size of them mean anything also. The replacement piston I bought had holes that were much bigger than the ones in the original piston. Is that a problem?

  6. I have a 1996 Polaris Xplorer 4x4. It runs great in forward in both high and low range. It shifts and goes into reverse easily but when you give it throttle in reverse it just bogs down and back fires. Once bad enough to pop the exhaust pipe off the cylinder. Any ideas?
  7. Hey guys could use some help here. Have polaris 400 95' dang thing no matter what i doe for adjusting the carb still does same thing. Cleaned it thoroughly. Seems to start fine when choke is open but as soon as i take it off it revs up for a second then just dies. Plus doesnt seem to idle properly. Have adjusted the idle screw and air fuel screw to no end still have same problem. Need help anyone? Anyone?
  8. I am a noob. Recently bought a 95 Xplorer off craigslist to have some fun with and plow my drive. When I purchased it the seller said all it needed was a new battery. It consistently started on the second pull at first. Now it fires up right away or I nearly throw my back out. It doesnt seem to fire at all when it wont start. The electric starter doesnt work. The relay just clicks when trying to use the electric start. I shorted the positive battery terminal to the starter but got nothing. I was going to take the starter out to see about replacing it but thought I should get it running consistently from the pull first. Any suggestions? Possible simple checks? Spark plugs or the carb were my first thoughts but I am new to working on a 2-stroke.
  9. purchaced 99 or 00 polaris xplorer 400 used a couple of years ago. recently, electric start stopped working, but pull start is fine. we all use it for property chores and my son rides a bit for fun. problem is, i can't pull start it. i do have the repair manual, but i thought i'd connect with other riders on this issue too. how do i tell if it's a starter or some other problem. also, beginning to skip/buck as i accelerate, especially up hill. engine running smoothly, maybe a belt issue? how often does the drive belt need replacing. my son and i did it once a year and a half ago or so. thanks.
  10. well the quad is lacking bottom end ??????????? ..... also now starts fine neutral it runs great with throttle when it is in gaged high gear or low or reverse she bogs out no power what could it be?
  11. 2000 2 stroke polaris xplorer 400 just bought quad goes into low gear reverse but high gear it grinds going in and when i do get it in it pops back out into netrual some times it will go into high gear Can anybody help me???????
  12. I have had zero problems until 2 weeks ago. It starts and you can go 10-15mins. When it starts to heat up it will bog down, the more gas you give it to keep it running it will actually stall right out. The recoil seizes up. Once it cools you can restart it. I thought it was the gas so I put in Stabil but of course that didn't work. Im no mechanic but I noticed the fan not running, is that normal or does it only kick on when it gets hot? Could that be the problem. Please help, its making me crazy
  13. HEY ALL, NEW TO THE SITE..MY POLARIS XPLORER 400 REAR BRAKES WONT WORK...JUST FILLED WITH FLUID BUT STILL NOTHING...I PURCHASED THE QUAD USED RECENTLY AND GOT A DECENT DEAL ON IT... I OPENED UP THE BRAKE FLUID RESEVOIR AND REALIZED IT WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY. WHEN i RODE IT I REALIZED THAT THE FOOT PEDAL HAD ABSOLUTELY NO FUNCTION AT ALL. YOU CAN PUSH IT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BOARD AND THE QUAD STILL DOESNT EVEN THINK OF SLOWING DOWN. IM THINKING PADS BUT NOT ENTIRLY SURE JUST THOUGHT ID GET ANOTHER OPINION...THANKS IN ADVANCE
  14. Hi all, I took my driven clutch appart because it would not open and close with rmp increase and decrease. The buttons are bad and i will replace those. It came appart fast and I am unsure what holes the srping was in. There is a chart in the book that lists from soft to hard for the settings but was curious if anyone has played with these settings and how much of a difference it has made?
  15. MY 98 xployer start good, runs good for about 15 min. then starts missing and shuts off and wont start till it cools off. Any idea what it could be?
  16. Anyone, I have a 1995 Polaris 400L Xplorer that dies everytime I put it in any forward gear. That is unless I push the overide button. Then it acts like Reverse does when your not pushing the overide button. When you put it in reverse it runs like it should but still only runs like the overide button is not pushed. When you push it there is no change.... So in short. When going forward I have to push the overide button to get the atv to move When going in reverse i'm unable to utilize the overide button to exceed normal operation. When in nuatral I have to push the overide button to achieve smooth idle or it dies. When in any forward gear I have to do the same for smooth idle. When in Reverse the atv will idle smooth without the button pushed. I hope I haven't confused anyone but this is really starting to get under my skin! Thanks, Tom
  17. Hello, I am having an issue with my 400 xplorer. It will only top out about 25mph. I suspected the belt was slipping so I replaced it. After a full day of riding about 15 to 20 we headed down the road to return home and the belt burnt in to. I had checked allignment and that seemed OK as well. So now I am looking at clutches starting with the primary because it seems to have the most moving parts. First I priced a new one and found a comet clutch for $299. Then I priced a rebuild kit for the current clutch and found one for $199. That seemed high so I priced the pieces I thought would need replaced at bike bandit including the buttons, the spring, and a bushing. Has anyone rebuilt there primary and had any luck? Is there any way to test it before spending any money? I ran the engine with the cover off just to see what i could see. The clutch moves in and out but the whole engine moves too as the rpm increase the engine tourques toward the rear of the machine. Is that natural or could that be part of the problem? I'm looking for someone that has had these issues to give me a little advise. The things runs perfect so if I can figure this out Im in good shape. Thanks Kevin
  18. I will be off in the woods for 2 weeks without electricity or generator and want to use the bike charging system to recharge a 12v utility battery I use for lighting in camp. My idea is to run the utility battery down to 11.0volts (while lighting at nite), then connect it to the bike battery during the 5 - 6 hours I would be riding during the next day. I am hoping it would come close to being fully recharged during that time. Bike is a 1997 Explorer 400 4x4 with a new battery. Anyone any idea how well this recharging would work and/or if this would damage the bike charge system?? I would try it first with no lites or accessories on. Also thought it would be good to allow both batteries to become kind of voltage balanced (battery leaching)before starting the bike to reduce the initial charging. load.
  19. I have a 99 or 2000 Xplorer 4x4 my daughter washed it for me and took the seat off so not sure if she got some water where she wasn't supose to or I just have a problem. I started it fine after she washed it and now two days later it won't start! I changed the spark plug and smell gas when I tried to start it but just wont take off! I pulled the plug and pulled the starter chord and it will spark just wont do anything. Also I need a good battery Thanks a million for the help guys I am a career Firefighter so I have no idea how to really do thing like this or know about this stuff at all!

Hey guys i have found a 1997 polaris xplorer for $450..it needs a few things...one of which i do not know anything about it is a cdi box, it need a new one... does anyone recommend a certain brand? or were i can find a stock one.. i have been searching on google for sometime now and no luck... i need your help

I have a 2000 Explorer 400 and i pulled out the gear box and when i put it back in i have no nutral and no reverse lights and my 4X4 light does not work , does any one have any thaught on this i was thinking it might be the plud that are on the gear box but i cleaned it thuraly and still no good could one broken wire cause all 3 probloms? Beginning to think i have a piece of junk.
