1985 Kawasaki Bayou 185 - Questions

Got me a little 85 kLF 185 to putt around on with the kiddos. It's in great shape. I was just going to change the oil and was wondering if there is an oil filter or anything and where to find it to replace/clean it. If anyone has a pdf download of the shop manual, that would be nice.

Also, the front left tire (facing it from the front, not riding) tilts in both vertically and horizontally a little. How do I go about re-aligning that tire up?

there is an oil filter behind a round cover most likely on the drivers side of the engine with three screws holding it on. use an atv oil, 5w40 or 10w40. regular motor oil will damage your transmission.

Awesome, thanks for the info! Yeah I'll probably use Valvoline 10/40 atv oil. Has the additives for wet clutches and stuff.

Now I've been looking around and most people are saying 1/8 or 1/4 (inch?) toe in is usually recommended. I'm guessing that's the 'pitch' from the rear of the tire to the front, right?

Your ATV has the same crankcase as my klt160. The oil filter is on the bottom next to the oil drain. The drain is the smaller bolt, the filter is the bigger one. Unscrew it and clean the screen out well and reinstall. 10w40 is the recommended oil viscosity from Kawasaki.

Oh ok. On my ATC200s the screen is behind a spring under the drain cap. There isn't some other component that needs cleaning as well? A rotor filter or something? Found a portion of the owner's manual and service online. So only thing it says is oil and screen.

No other filters. Just the screen. My 160 is just a smaller bore to the 185. Cases are the same. I have the manual for mine and the parts interchange. As I installed a 185 cam into my bike, the rear diff is 185. But, the parts in the diff are slightly different I found outn but motor wise, the same.

Where would the VIN number be on this bike? Want to make sure it is actually an 85. I'm pretty sure it's a Bayou.

Yeah the previous owner had a DPR7EA (9?) in there. Calls for D8EA or DR9EA... So I guess I'll use the 8. Also, the air filter was completely rotted. So I'll be swinging by the parts store to get another. Can you just use Bearing Grease to make the seal between the carb and the filter cage?

I would use filter specific sealing grease. You can use bearing grease, but it will degrade the filter to fast. As for the vin, I am not sure where it may be located. I would assume on one of the lower tubes of the frame by the motor but I am guessing.

yes, should be on left / drivers side, possibly by the footrest (flashlight needed as filled with dirt and guck) or right at the neck where the handlebars slide in ...

Now that grease goes between the metal of the mesh cage and the air box plastic? Or the end of the foam and the plastic wire cage? Here is the schematic:
