This post is just an FYI. Im fixing up the subject quad. Problems and solutions found so far:

1) The ignition switch would not complete the circuit. Fortunately, you can take this ignition switch apart. I cleaned the corrosion off the contacts and lubricated it with WD40. It works well now.

2) The lights did not work. I took the switch apart and found a broken wire where it solders onto the switch. I also cleaned the switch with WD40. The lights now work.

3) Fuel tank was full of rust. I had cleaned it up a year or two ago, but it was rusted so bad I could hardly get the cap off. I bought a plastic after market tank from Clarke. They are bit expensive, but it fits well and seems to work.

4) Cleaned out carb to rid it of rust.

The quad fired right up after 2 or 3 seconds of cranking.

Remaining work may include new muffler and piping. Im wondering if I have problems with the alternator too. The front brakes also need work. Beyond that, I think everything is working OK.

nice you were able to salvage the electrical parts.

front brakes ... drum? yah they are special for sure LOL.

why are you thinking alternator? the bikes have stators and if you are getting good spark, it is ok ,,, are you having problems with lights dimming or battery not holding a charge?

Sorry, wrong terminology (shows my ignorance). The spark is good. I don't have a battery in it yet, so Im not sure if it will hold a charge. My post immediately before this one explains why I was concerned about the stator, but based on your response it sounds like my concerns might not be founded.

The front brakes are hydraulic, but I haven't even looked to see if they are drum or disc. Im betting drum. Ive never worked on hydraulic brakes of any kind before, so this will be a learning experience. Is there any point in working on them? I had an old Yamaha with cable brakes, and the front weren't worth fixing because they never lasted for long.

I have a 1997 Yamaha Big Bear 350 4x4. It used to start right up. Then all of a sudden it wouldn't crank. I have a schematic for it so I started tracing the problem. I had no power at the starter solenoid. According to the schematic the power comes from the neutral switch and through the starter circuit cut out relay. I cannot locate the cut out relay on this machine.. If I apply power to the relay it will crank with the start button.
The neutral switch is hard to get to with all the brackets on this thing. I did find out from all my research that if I apply the rear brake lever it will start.
Does anybody know if the cut out relay exists and where it might be found?

      I wanted to share a successful workaround for a "no-spark" issue on a 2009 LT-A400.
This is specifically for cases where the CDI has been diagnosed as faulty, but the age or condition of the machine makes the cost of a brand-new OEM unit hard to justify.
Note: This modification compromises the factory “no-start” circuits.
On some malfunctioning CDI units the internally damaged circuitry is only partial.
Feeding full time power to the Parking Brake pin, the unit is triggered to bypass the internal fault and produce a healthy consistent output to the Ignition coil.
      The Modification
See the second diagram attached below for the wiring specifics.
      The Result:
The machine has clocked over 1,000km since this repair and is still running strong with no ignition dropouts.
      ⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING ⚠️
Please be aware that this modification compromises the factory safety "no-start" circuits.
The machine will now start in gear. The safety interlock involving the handbrake is no longer functional. The machine can move unexpectedly if the starter is pressed while in gear. Proceed at your own risk. If you sell the machine or let others ride it, ensure they are fully aware that these factory safety buffers have been removed.

I am trying to diagnose a no spark issue with my 02 Big Bear 400 and I am really hoping it is not a CDI.  I have done the test on the stator and I believe that is faulty.  I ordered a new aftermarket one from a the jungle website and it tested bad right out of the box so I am waiting for a different one to arrive from an ATV parts supplier.  I started looking out of curiosity at CDI units and it seems if it is for a big bear you are SOL.  Kodiaks, no problem.  Big Bear. No such luck.

I’m having a issue with my choke when its on it runs fine when I cut the choke off the atv cuts off went to take the carburetor off and saw the choke plunger broke at the nut to screw it in could this be my issue? Do I just need to buy a plunger kit and put it on? I took the carburetor off and cleaned both jets anyway just to make sure and it’s still having issues staying on

I got a 2005 350 Raptor Special Edition and I'm dealing with a no start issue; the weirdest thing is when I'm cranking it fires and slows down showing signs of pre firing, smoke shoots out the carburetor every time it sparks. every electrical part (CDI, Rectifier, Stator, Coil) has been swapped out from previous owner, the top end of the engines all new and I cleaned the carb out, anyone got any ideas or similar problems, also is it possible to have a bad spark timing
