I have a 1989 Yamaha Moto 4 250. It starts right up on first pull and runs like a champ. However there is a reason I'm having to pull start it. When the bike is running the lights and the kill switch work but when the bike is off I have no power. The battery is brand new. Do I start with the regulator or maybe the CDI? I wasn't sure if the coil or the starter had anything to do with it. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

I came on to ask a similar question, take it by responses to yours, zero, that we are on our own here...

My 87 decided to discharge battery when not in use, so I unhook it when she sits, a hassle, until I get a chance to figure out what the common things that go wrong when the key is off and a battery drain, seems to charge well when running. Took out a brand new Gel battery on me.. garden tractor battery strapped to rear grab bar for now, looks ghetto...

I would have checked with the ignition switch and followed wires to harness near steering head.

It would start without the neutral light on, or whichever it is, not by my rig and been 5 months since rode it.. but recall a light came on when turned key then it would start, there is a single wire in rear that pigtails off the battery cable, would have looked there as well, easy to get bumped off if you picked up something with tires... hope you had it resolved by now, been over a year... chime in and tell us what it was..

I am unable to find a wiring diagram for this UTV.  When I turn the switch to on, the contractor does not engage.  The Brake pressure switch and the parking brake switches work correctly. What else should I be looking for?  All of the diagrams I have found are for newer models and the wire color coding is different.

      Thanks

Fixing for a friend. Atv was at a different friends house to be fixed and he rebuilt the carb and had it running nice, then it shut off and no more. He replaced the key and the coil.

So he got busy, so I am helping, I checked the wiring from the stator to the cdi, and from the cdi to the coil. All is good. I checked resistance on the pickup coil, good, and on the source coil, open. I buy a new stator (China) and the 4 prong plug only has 3 wires in it while mine has all 4. I checked resistance in the source coil and it's in the 300's. I pulled one of the old pickup wires out of the old stator and wire it in the new one. Still no spark.

Why do the wires differ, I checked the VIN again and it's "J" for the year and I got a 1988 stator. Please help!

Just getting into this issue really. Been replacing solenoids but now I'd like to track down the problem. This time I'm not getting neutral/reverse lights or start button. Was on a creek ride when it started doing this recently. It cranks by arcing the solenoid and gives me no light or start button but if I crank with the pull cord....the neutral light and the button work. Turn it off and try to crank with the key and nothing. I'm looking into the safety switch issue tomorrow and re charging the battery. Just figured this was odd enough of a problem that you guys might be familiar. Thanks

Hi guys, I was given a 2000 Honda Recon fourtrax 250 (I think that's the full name lol). The previous owner had it sitting for a while before I got it. It sat for another few years in my ownership. I got it up and going on its first test drive today!! I was wondering where everyone buys their parts from?  Coming from the car community, we have sites like RockAuto and many more. Anything like that for quads? Also would like to be pointed in a direction, if possible, for plastics. I am missing a few and would like to have it complete. I appreciate any input!
