If I'm not mistaken that unit the reverse cable can be adjusted. if you pull back the rubber on the perch there should be an adjustment on the cable.

Try putting fresh fuel in unit. Also check your diaphragm spring

Check your valve adjustment with engine cold

Clutch plates could be sticking

Check your ignition coil it sounds like your getting intermittent spark. Also check the fuel it may have bad fuel in it.

Yes very common a lot of times the chain brakes if its not maintained properly. Or the shift shaft gets bent due to hard shiftig
