  1. Here’s hoping it all works out. I just spent the last four hours or so cleaning up the garage after working on the LT80 motor again today. Split the case again because I decided to replace the crank bearings and oil seals to be safe. Cleaned up the clutches for the belt drive, and popped the wrist pin out in anticipation of the incoming piston kit. So I did a little math, and after selling the little China quad yesterday I’m up $25 on the whole kid quad project which entailed buying two LT 80s and two China wheelers, then fixing the China wheeler, and parting out other sh**. Sold a Coolster 110cc yesterday for $50 over asking price somehow ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And I still have a boatload of spare parts to use or sell.
  2. Haven't gotten a quote on the job yet as I've had to shift focus a bit Hoping it's just the fan clutch , but not entirely optimistic about that possibility. On a positive note, a guy I used to work for has fallen into ill health (that's not the positive part, FYI) and asked me to take over his business, which is essentially the equivalent of your hope for me to fall into some money. We do boat canvas and upholstery (I do powersports seats too, wink wink) and his shop is HUGE compared to mine, plenty of space to park and work on quads, cars, boats, etc. and it abuts a patch of undeveloped land that stretches about a mile back to the banks of the Hudson, and a mile or so in either direction. Nice little patch of dirt and trees to rip through unhindered by authorities or angry landowners. It's all a balancing act, that's the only thing that's clear to me after nearly fifty years of this Sisyphean existence. I have just learned to try and roll with the punches and absorb the hits because I know my "luck" will turn around if I don't get too focused on negative sh**. I like quads, I'm enjoying working on them and learning about them, (much thanks to you, BTW) and I'm not sweating the fact that I've blown a good chunk of change on them because I actually enjoy it, and that's a hard thing to come by. Money is relatively easy, especially taking over a larger shop with higher sales volume. I'm not so much "on a budget" as I am concerned about spending the money in the most cost effective way possible. I started looking at Neway stuff last night and realized I'm still in way over my head skill-wise LOL. I'd just as soon pay someone qualified to do that job in lieu of ruining a head myself. The guy working on my truck is actually a former Honda pro MX rider, and he also gave his seal of approval to the machine shop I mentioned, so they must be doing something right.
  3. Fair enough. Appreciate the insight and advice. Found a local powersports shop that does machining in-house, and come highly recommended by the local dealer as well. Water pump on my Tundra just sh** the bed last night, so I currently have a MUCH bigger fish to fry.
  4. So, I think I’m gonna keep the king quad barely stock, but utilize all this info and put a 250S cam in my 230motor/160 frame Frankenquad. It’s smokes like a son of a bi***, so I’m going to redo the top end anyway, might as well use those nice heavy valve springs I got, and that hot cam.
  5. To be honest, information like this and other stuff in this thread ought to be in a sticky.
  6. They didn’t mention that because it doesn’t benefit them through a sale. They would rather you junket and buy one of their new ones.
  7. Did you see the part where I said you don’t necessarily need that exact regulator rectifier? Because I think that part might be more helpful than trying to search in vain for a part that does not exist in inventory anywhere.
  8. The LTZ cam is the same as the KQ 300 and the 250 4x4 “D” on the end
  9. Honestly, as far as I know, you could use a different, bigger regulator/rectifier. Same with starter relay, a regular old solenoid for a lawn tractor ought to work. You may just need to change a couple connectors to make it fit.
  10. Googled the part number, and found a bunch of them. https://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/detail/suzuki/32800-40b00/b1067523
  11. So back to camshafts... Still digging around and I found that the "Hot Cams" upgrade for the LT230S is the same part# as the one for the LTZ250. Specs listed below along with interchange info. LT250S is notably absent, but I know the same cam *should* fit, right? I can't find any specs about stock cams i.e. lift, duration, etc. so I don't know if this would be an upgrade or not. But not necessarily the HotCams product - think a stock LTZ250 cam would be any good? Thinking more about putting it in the 230 at this point and leaving the KQ alone. I dunno. Stock cam is the same "D" version. At this point I'm wondering about getting the cam reground.
  12. LOL I was browsing through some threads and saw your old posts that sounded EERILY like the problems I was having lol. Was thinking today... how about I help you make that seat cutter pay for itself? I don't want to blow the money on a tool I have zero clue how to use properly, and you seem to know WTF you're doing. I'd just as soon spend the money with you if you don't mind doing the work. If not, say so, and I'll try to track down someone local-ish.
  13. Engine back in, and started with the plastics before I went to bed. Not bad for a few hours work and some random scrap parts I had on the shelf. Waiting for a new stator, belt(had to cut it to untangle aforementioned rats nest) air filter and plug to arrive to fire it up
  14. My homebrewed case splitter made from a lawnmower blade. Popped apart to reveal some rusty remains of what appears to have been the reed valve. Got it cleaned up and started rebuilding. Managed to find another nest in the airbox- full of hair from a deer. Weird stuff.
  15. Picked up a barn find that someone had already partially disassembled because the “motor locked up” but they never opened the case. Everything was bagged and labeled, and as I’ve mentioned before- I love a challenge ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ After a couple hours of fun with various pullers and hammers I managed to persuade the magneto/flywheel to come off. Hoo boy what a mess. Then I found an actual rats nest in the clutch cover. ಠ_ಠ
  16. For now I’m going to keep it. Almost all of the headaches I was attributing to it were the intake valve issue.
  17. The BST31-133 I got that I was cursing just yesterday. Runs like a charm now.
  18. So I have to give a whole lot of credit to whoever decided what jets to supply with this carb. They sure aren’t anywhere near what is called for in the manual, and I suspect there may be internal differences in the carburetor that have been accounted for with these jetting choices. The main is a 145, the pilot is unmarked but looks to be somewhere in the 12.5 or smaller range by eyeball😳 but lo and behold, once I got everything straightened out and got it running reliably, putting those jets in made it go like hell and idle nicely. Keep in mind this was a carb that sold for $50 on Amazon, which I got from Amazon warehouse for $20.18 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  19. This look like anything worth a crap? https://www.ebay.com/itm/164349125071 Keep in mind I don't shy away from buying specialty tools at Harbor Freight - IO generally only need them to work once =P. Don't be fooled by the overflowing Snap-On box in the background
  20. I legit laughed out loud at “it hasn’t paid for itself yet”. 😂 Got it mostly put back together tonight, still have some odds and ends to sort out but it’s almost resembling a real quad again. Cut out some circles of ABS and riveted them over the spots where the fender screws to the rack and cracks
  21. Wonder if thermal expansion opens up the seat enough to function when warm? There appears to be a lot of adjuster screw left above the nut, it seemed kind of “tall” to me in comparison with others I had seen. I bet that one of the recent PO’s did a halfassed valve job on it. Do you think switching the current cam over into that one and installing it would correct the issue?
  22. Did that a couple more times and it roared to life. Thanks! So it seems that purchasing that head for $55 was a good idea 😂
  23. Loosened the intake lash and managed to get it to run for a second or two if I held my palm over the intake. But then it dies.
  24. Brother, I think you're onto something. I mentioned the RTV on the valve cover, but did I ever tell you about the dings inside the intake inspection cap? I switched the caps to see if it was a persistent condition, and it appears to have been in the past. So, someone has definitely been in there to address an issue with the intake valve, and left a trail of blue goo on the way out. I replaced the caps and o-rings yesterday, I'll go pop them back off and check the lash again. intake .001-.003 and exhaust .005-.007?
  25. So today we're back to no-start. Cranks, is getting fuel in the cylinder, plug is wet. There is spark when I check, have tried three different plugs. Have pulled off the intake boot and installed a new o-ring and gasket, got a tighter hose clamp. Eliminated unmetered airflow. What's next? Stator? Rectifier? .30-06?
