  1. He's got some good info re: interchange between models and generations.
  2. I just see 2000+ views, so it must be getting some action besides you and me This has turned from a one off post about the KQ to a reference library/tutorial/build diary. I have all the manuals I need, but nothing beats the kind of insight and actual learning you get from conversing with someone who's well versed in the subject. There wouldn't be teachers and professors if you could learn all there was to know from simply reading books. As* in seat time is what makes the difference between theory and praxis. I'm all about trying new things and gaining new skills, but I'm not a walking case of Dunning-Kruger; I'm smart enough to know I'm not smart enough in certain areas, and that's where I generally concede and yield to experience (and generally open the wallet). The one thing that pisses me off about this bulletin board software is the lack of an edit function. I could have sworn I used to be able to edit then a mod stripped me of that ability. Sometimes it will auto-merge replies though, which is weird.
  3. I cherry picked all the "good" stuff from it already. The beefier heel guards, bumper, and the GREEN shocks Walmart will no longer mount tires for me, period. I guess their guy didn't enjoy wrestling with 40 year old wheeler tires :P Luckily my buddy Jason owns an old school tire shop. Tires only, no lifts, just jacks. He does me a solid on mounting atv and mower tires. Pretty cheap unless the bead is welded to the rim like they were on my 160. Still, even for those old rotten tires he had to literally chisel off the rim, he charged me $75 for dismounting old rotten rubber and mounting new shoes on the 4 of them. I just dropped off 4 LT80 wheels for him yesterday with a new set of DWT's for the front and a spare set of the same Maxxis rears I nicked off the KFX. Incidentally - if anyone else is reading this, feel free to chime in, even just to say Hi. This is starting to feel like a love letter to Randy =D
  4. I actually was looking at rebuild kits when I noticed entire starters for around the same price ($25). I figured "Taiwan motor - Chinese starter is fine". There's a nice OEM Mikuni on it, but I also picked up a knockoff that came with a new petcock and airbox boot for $25 to be on the safe side. She’s a real beaut
  5. 10:15pm - just under 3 hours from empty case to built. Then another 4 hours of reassembly of the quad. Wrapped up around 2 am. Got a little excited and tried to fire the starter and was greeted by a hearty “CLICK CLICK CLICK“ Swapped known good, yadda yadda. New unit on the way for Friday delivery. Picked up a replacement carbon petcock just for grins. Note to self: ALWAYS bench test the starter no matter how shiny and new it looks.
  6. Just got back from running some overdue errands to find my mailbox stuffed to the gills. Piston kit, wrist pin bearing, throttle cable, and a bunch of stickers from DG. Did I tell you about the SASE project I did with my 5 year old? We sent emails and snail mails with self addressed stamped envelopes to a list of about 50 powersports manu's, telling them how much he likes his newfound hobby of 4-wheeling and it's been raining stickers here ever since. A couple nice folks sent cool stuff like a hat, t-shirt, keychain, and some sent print catalogs if they have them. His little LT80 is going to be at least 40% stickers by weight I think. Anywho. Off to go build a really big chainsaw motor. I'll be sure to bug you with trivial updates. Or forget entirely and just make another picture dump after it's done. Six of one, half dozen of the other, eh?
  7. Truck needs a radiator. One is on the way, and I can at least go get groceries and stuff close to home. Charged me .5 hours for diag, got out of there for under $60 after the governor's cut. The piston on the shelf was from the LT80 I bought for $200 that had a broken case. I never really looked that closely at it, but I did recall seeing some dot matrix numbers stamped on the top of it, and when I looked up the part number on that Wiseco box, the picture sparked something in the lizard brain and I saw the old piston in my mind's eye LOL. Grabbed it and cleaned it off, and sure enough, same numbers on it. 700cc just seems fukn GARGANTUAN for something without a steering wheel and seatbelts. My first intro to dirtbikes was on a buddy's CR500 2 stroke, so I'm naturally wary of bikes with motors that weigh more than I do.
  8. We'll see. I'm going to button up my LT80 tomorrow and make sure to swap all the choice parts onto it from the green machine and make sure it runs before I sell anything. Working on tracking down the paperwork for the dirt bike, and have a harness to install in the Frankenquad. Plus I have to sew a couple of boat covers somewhere in there so I can pay off whatever the mechanic needs for my truck. So... whether or not the KFX has a Wiseco in it... I just found another one in the parts on my shelf. had to clean it off, but sure enough I found 673M05000 stamped on it, which is a Wiseco standard bore 50.00mm piston. Pretty sure this is what came out of the broken motor from the first LT80 I got, and has been sitting on the shelf this whole time... Saw a video about clutch tuning these little buggers, and I'm tempted to do it while it's all apart.
  9. I’m not sure if it’s installed in this one, or if he just had it in the box of parts but there is a Wiseco pistons box and a little velvet baggie that came with it. And there was a nice ported and polished head along with it, and a fairly new set of Maxxis rears. So I have some more fun little parts to work with in my build. Just posted a boatload of parts on the marketplace and Craigslist, we’ll see what sort of interesting creatures that draws out 😂 Going to do some quick part swapping tomorrow once the rest of my eBay parts get here, hopefully finish up the LT80 and put the KFX80 up for sale. Flip it like a pancake. 🥞

  11. I get into the KFX80 last night, thinking it’ll be a quick carb clean and air filter change, put a fresh battery in it and fire it up! I swear I’ll never learn. while I was pulling the spark plug out, I noticed a little bit of pink fluff. This peaked my curiosity, and I pulled off a couple of the air induction boots to find more pink fluff. Pulled off the engine cowling… lots more pink fluff and a treasure trove of turds at the bottom. Packed all around the magneto. Cleaned that all out, found the magneto and stater and surprisingly shiny good condition, unchewed. Put the cowling all back together, and noticed that hose that goes from the cowling thru to the clutch cover. They say a mouse can fit through the hole a little bit smaller than a dime, and the idea of that hose is about the size of a quarter. I decided that out of due diligence I needed to take the clutch cover off to be sure. that turned out to be a fortuitous decision, yet a costly one in terms of time invested in the project lol IMG_1576.MOV this thing was a mouse condominium, worse than the previous one I had found, yet not nearly as badly degraded internally. Ended up taking both the clutches off and cleaning up the driven faces replacing the belt, and buttoning it all back together after a good cleaning. this is my driveway this morning
  12. Still no word about the truck, so I was forced to acquire a dirt cheap KFX80 barn find that came with a parts pile. Guy was nice enough to even load it all off and drop it at my house, seeing as I had no truck to back up and all... Not bad from the 10-foot view Another frame, exhaust, a couple wheels, miscellaneous parts, that spare center case is cracked =( I bet someone clever could TIG it back into shape.
  13. While I kind of feel bad for him, I want my friggin skid plate. I found a bunch of his family on Facebook, but I’m not gonna bother them. I’m sure he’s been enough of a burden. Also, using OSINT to find ATV parts seems kinda stalker-y. 😂 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  14. Who knows. He had a stack of bills of sale from the previous string of owners, which wouldn't be common for a stolen wheeler. I'm not certain that it's stolen, but his history and disposition made me suspicious. Seems like a relatively smart kid which is a shame.
  15. Chances are it's leaking out of your exhaust valve inspection cap (15). Change the o-rings (16) which are likely dried out and flat like a turd on a bad stretch of road. You can buy OEM ones (09280-30001) for too much money, or get them from your local hardware store for around $1 each. Spec is (D:3.0, ID:29.5) which means a 3mm thick o-ring with an inside diameter of 29.5 mm. I found ones that were 3mmX30mm which worked perfect. Stopped my smokeshow, it should stop yours.
  16. The two of them combine to make a semi-auto, with the centrifugal clutch taking the place of a hand lever operated manual clutch and simply engages based on RPMs. The stack of steel discs and pressure plates is the same in manual and semi-auto. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I understand it.
  17. Yeah, same. That's why I called the cops. The ones who actually arrested him were less than helpful, but his hometown boys were ALL too familiar, and willing to help. No reports of it being stolen, they ran the VIN through several databases. Said they'd shake him down for parts for me if they ever ran across him
  18. I posted a link to the 250 manual for you too in that other thread. Good luck!
  19. Hey man, I’m about four hours north of you and in the same boat. What I hear is that Pennsylvania is the place to be
  20. So just a wee update on the King Quad... Been waiting for the guy to get back to me with the airbox guts and lid, skid plate, and a few other random parts for this thing, and he's dropped off the face of the planet. So I googled the dude, and found his arrest record from last summer for Criminal Possession of Stolen Chainsaws and 6 glassine bags of fentanyl! So I wasn't far off the mark - not a crackhead per se, but a junkie! Called the cops to make sure I don't have a stolen quad on my hands, and they said "Oh, we're very familiar with Harold, he's a known drug user." So I'm waiting for a call back after a VIN check. Good times.
  21. Here's the Zongshen 250 manual https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xoz41zVuVBJJMctuAjYh3O3G_hAwHmvH/view?usp=sharing
  22. Here's a document that purports to be "ALL WIRING DIAGRAMS" for china quads I see a 250 listed on pg 27 Hope it helps! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xbpuSHojAbIO2ae2gwkVERJFgn5YIw2i/view?usp=sharing
  23. The only thing I can figure out is that this thing was sitting, and whoever discovered it realized that it was varnished or about to be, and dumped the most readily available substance in there to stave off the problem. They have a big tanks of diesel (and Kero in the winter) for the tractors there. it’s smoked like it had seafoam in it for the first five or 10 minutes 😂
  24. this thing was a fun couple hours to figure out. Wouldn’t kick over even though it was getting spark and fuel. Turns out the fuel was red kerosene. Once I replaced that with some good old high octane gasoline, things changed remarkably for the better. Little tweaked the idle and mixture screw, and this little f*cker rips my homebrew case splitter/flywheel puller I bought the China quads after the first $200 LT80 with the broken case just to get something for him to ride a little bit while I figured out the other thing. Bought them for $100 each, sold one for $500, traded the parts one for a blaster frame and some CRF 250 plastics lol. Then last week I found the second $300 LT 80 that had a good case, but a seized crank. So now I’m on the homestretch with the LT 80, should have it running by next weekend.
