2006 Arctic Cat 250 Utility ATV Clunking Sound

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone has experience this problem before.  I have a 2006 Arctic Cat 250cc Utility ATV and recently replaced the rear axle due to a rollover and axle being bent. My problem is now when I took it for a ride it make a clunking sound almost sounds like it's coming from the rear axle housing where the big gear on the axle mates up with the gear on the gear drive shaft. It almost sounds like when a tooth on a gear is missing and it skips and grabs.

It makes the noise going in a straight line.  It almost sounds like the big gear that is on the axle, inside the housing, missing teeth and catching after skipping over the missing teeth.  I was going to tear down the rear axle again but someone else mentioned that it could be a gear in the transmission so I wanted to see if anyone else experienced this before so I know where to start.  I have only replaced the rear axle and one of the rear hubs as that was bent also when it was flipped.

I hate to say it but it does sound like something in the rear diff if its not affected with braking. No change reverse or forward?

Yeah that's what I was thinking.  I was thinking since it's a shaft drive model that maybe a tooth or two sheared off when it was rolled.  Time to tear it down again.  Thanks for the help though and I will post what I find.

I had an arctic cat 550 side by side and when driving in a straight line and after taking my foot off the pedal it would make a noise like something was hitting the underside of the bike. Found it is a common thing apparently with those hikes. Dealer told me it was one of the grimlins in a.cats

It's more of a grinding or skipping than a clunking sort of like when a tooth skips a gear.

What's the best kids atv out there? I've seen everything from the ones released by the major manufacturers to all those knock offs. Kawasaki has a KFX 50 that is pretty nice for under $1800...

having an issue with the unit when running under a load up a hill or in high gear, seems like the belt is slipping, there is a clapping sound coming from the primary clutch like it releases and snaps back in. i don't think I should have a noise like that. this is a friends unit and he has already replaced the primary twice with the same result.
not sure where to look next

Anyone purchase or check out Rockymtnatv lately? Well I was just browsing over there and they have a pretty cool section called Ten Dollars Or Less. Some interesting things to check out if you are in the market.
