Just picked up a Moto 4 cheap, been sitting a few years, but had it running pretty quick.  Not sure on the year or size, haven't found where it's stamped at.  Cleaned the carb, replaced the fuel lines, cranked for a bit and had it running. Drove it around the farm a few times and then all of a sudden, it was as if you had reached up and turned the switch off. Replaced the battery, the old one was just something the previous owner had laying around. Also replaced the solenoid, as i just happened to have a new one laying around. So far the neutral switch light doesn't come on with the switch on and in neutral. I've checked all the connections I could find and fixed a couple of wires that were pieced together. I have 12v to the solenoid, and if i jump the terminals it will crank, just nothing when I hit the starter switch. As far as checking the regulator, coil, switch, etc. I know my way around a multimeter, just don't know how to check it out or any readings to look for. Any Ideas?

Here  is the  ehow response to  an inquiry   on the  location of the   Moto 4 serial  number.  http://www.ehow.com/how_7552168_identify-yamaha-model-moto-4.html

Once you know the    year  and model  of your  quad  you  can search  on a service manual  for it .   In the  meantime ,  I would check  out the  ignition switch  and also  check to see  if there  is a  second relay   in the  circuit that    powers  the  system.  If the  ignition switch    isn't making proper contact ,  nothing will  work.    When  you   jump the   starter  solenoid , you  are  bypassing  the  ignition switch  and  main  power  circuit.  Does  the  motor start and run while  you  have the  starter  solenoid  bypassed and  die  as soon  as  you break the  bypass?  That would indicate  the ignition switch  or  a   main system  solenoid  if   used.

Thanks for the info! Maybe now I can find the serial #.

Think I may have found the problem, went through all the wiring again today and found yet another wire that was pieced together. Fixed that, neutral light came on again, and she fired right up. Rode around for roughly 15-30 minutes without a problem and then it slowly died. It will crank and fire if I hold the throttle wide open, but won't stay running without WOT. Makes me think i may have sucked some trash out of the tank into the carb.

OK..  Sounds like you found the problem.  Yes ,  new  problem sounds  like you  got  some  junk  into    jet  on the carb.   If it  has been sitting for a long time  I'd suggest  taking the fuel tank  off   and  putting some  marbles in it    Close  it  up  and  give  it   good shaking  so the marbles   knock  all  the  crud  loose in the tank and you  can  rinse it  out  and clean  it ..  You  may  have to replace  the  fuel  valve also.  They generally  have a screen  on them  that  may have deteriorated,  or may  have been damaged if you  left it  in  when giving the  marble  and shaking treatment.  Clean  the  carb, add some fresh  gas to a  clean  tank, and hopefully  you  are good to  go  for some fun riding.

Turns out it's a '86 225.  Flushed the tank, new carb, and new fuel switch on the tank. Starts up and idles like a champ. Problem is that it falls on its face when opening the throttle.

First thought was maybe the breaks we're  locked up (felt like it may have been grabbing).. Went trough all of that, and checks out. I adjusted the mixture needle to 2 1/4 turns from seated. Cleaned and checked the plug a few times, and it's black and sooty.Anyone know the correct setting for these carbs?

It seems to get worse as things get warmer. Since I discovered the spark plug boot is toast, going to go ahead and order a new coil.  I'm wondering if the coil is crapping out when it gets hot, causing the fouling  of the plug.

I always have to tell my self to use the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) method when looking at problems for the first time. Check your air filter and make sure it's clean and in good shape : no mouse nests, holes or clogged with dirt. If that's all good turn your pilot screw all the way in and LIGHTLY seat it, then turn it out 2 turns. If it still runs rich turn it in 1/4 turn at a time until hopefully it smooths out. Give that a try.

One thing I forgot to mention, make sure your using fresh gas. If you are wondering at all if it's good, drain it and start over with fresh. Today's junk gas causes all sorts of problems.

Thanks to everyone for all the input! I've still got some break cables to replace, and a few other odds and ends, so I'm sure I'll have a few more questions here and there!

I am trying to diagnose a no spark issue with my 02 Big Bear 400 and I am really hoping it is not a CDI.  I have done the test on the stator and I believe that is faulty.  I ordered a new aftermarket one from a the jungle website and it tested bad right out of the box so I am waiting for a different one to arrive from an ATV parts supplier.  I started looking out of curiosity at CDI units and it seems if it is for a big bear you are SOL.  Kodiaks, no problem.  Big Bear. No such luck.

Hey guys! I am new here to the forum and need some help getting my Polaris 325 Magnum 2001 Running.....So I got it for free and it has never run quite right...I put a aftermarket carb on it last year and it was running fine but it only went like 20 maybe 25mph max......But then the needle and seat sealed leaked within a yeah and it flooded it REALLY bad so I changed the oil because it was full of gas. So then I put a genuine Polaris carb on it and I have it set to all the factory specs, but it was still not running right....So I replaced the ignition coil and the spark plug and that solved one of the problems I had (It would bog down and stop running when i would go up a hill) But it still didn't have that much "Punch" to it like my Kawasaki Prairie 300 ans Suzuki Kingkuad 300.....So I replaced the CDI but it's still not running right! It's acting like it rich kinda....So it runs mostly okayish when I have the airfilter on but the top of the airbox off but as soon as I put the airbox lid on it like REALLY bogs down and wants to stall really bad. I have the carb at the factory specs and it has a pretty new fuel pump so I have no ideas whats going wrong! It still nly has a top speed of only about 30-35mph and it sounds like it's choking the whole time! Thank you for sticking to the end, and I hope you guys can help me!

I have acquired a free 92 Polaris 350L 4X4. Ive replaced carburetor from ebay, replaced spark plug, im trying to pull start but sounds like it doesnt want to fire. Spark is a bright orange spark (checked with spark plug tester), replaced plug, pre mixed gas from an external gravity feed tank. Compression test good. Anyone got any recommendations for me?

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

If anyone is having issues with the Mikuni VM24SS carb, I thought I would post what issues I had and how I resolved them.
Acquired a 93 Bayou 220 that had sat for over 4 years.
The carb was extremely corroded and pitted and full of leftover fuel.
Cleaned carb and bowl and was able to get the engine to start.
Within 30 seconds exhaust would heat up and start to glow red hot.
Removed carb and recleaned everything, including a second overnight soak.
Needless to say, after removing the carb for the 5th time and my frustration to the limit I
realized that my attention had been to the carb body and not to the bowl.
There is a small brass rod on the bottom of the carb that goes down into the float bowl but is seperated from the main section. I had cleaned that area very well....I had thought.
***The corrosion had sealed off the channel that runs from the main bowl section to the small tube section on the side of the float bowl. No amount of carb cleaner was going to get it to budge. So i took a small nail and started to scrape away the corrosion and was eventually able to dislodge enought of the corrosion that carb cleaner would flow through that channel. ***
I thoroughly cleaned each side of the channel in the float bowl and reinstalled the carb and now the issue of it running lean is gone.
On a second note the fuel mixture screw was a nightmare to remove as the threads had been corroded and wouldnt let the screw come out. I used a little cutting oil and worked the mixture screw in and out until I was able to push past the corroded threads and completely remove the needle. After a couple passes with a tap to clean the threads it is like new again.
Hope this helps if you are having a lean running machine.
