2017 Polaris 450 missing decompressor ball

Recommended Posts

Bought a 2nd hand 2017 polaris sportsman 450  with 12000 hours recently and have done a lot of maintenance including a new 18 amp battery

to assist faster starting. Having expected to find a 4 valve head i took the valve cover off and found a single ohc with its 2 buckets. At first dissapointed, i realized

this was a run forever engine, no visible wear noticeable and still running perfectly. The decompressor ball was missing in the camshaft, with the lever and spring

still in place. Since the motor starts at once every time i think its better to keep the camshaft as is . In my experience a decompressor is only needed for a manual starter.

Shouldn't be a problem MX, Take the cam out,and enlarge the hole with a mini grinder so the ball comes out. The actuator can remain in place or remove the sprocket and get rid of it. A full size (18 amp ) battery can handle the compression easily. In my 50 years as a mechanic i've never seen such a brilliant cam lobe destroying device as in Polaris. Go for it

I just had the same sort of issue with my 2017 450 HO and it lead to my cam breaking. The ball had fallen out of the hole and was rolling around on the head. I only have around 400 miles on mine. If I could I would get a cam without it.

having an issue with the unit when running under a load up a hill or in high gear, seems like the belt is slipping, there is a clapping sound coming from the primary clutch like it releases and snaps back in. i don't think I should have a noise like that. this is a friends unit and he has already replaced the primary twice with the same result.
not sure where to look next

The stock driver seat cushion is separated at a seam. I took the seat apart and found that the material has torn and cannot be re-stiched. I'm trying to find a replacement seat. Any suggestions? Hoping for a used seat but couldn't find one on Ebay.

      Hi,
Got a Big Boss produced 2016 YM 2017 that gives DTC 520 285 2 (random)
What I understand is correlation code for brakesensors, very little information in workshop manual.
Removed front plastic to discover that no connector was mounted on the brake pressure switch!?
The only "brake" information seems to come from the micro switch at the brake lever.
Does anyone know if Polaris does anything special on the 6x6 or had this issue?

Has anyone else had an issue on older king quads where the oil would leak from the top of the head (due to a failed gasket) and drip onto the hot exhaust? Mine got so hot one time it caught fire. Just wondering if this is a common issue, as I've seen the same thing happen on multiple bikes that were the same model.
