So I recently got a 2003 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4 as a winter project but is needing less work then I thought, but I do have an issue and asking a tip. The issue is im loosing oil but my rear swing arm boot is ripped so im trying to confirm its that, and I have no lights for gearing but it seems to go in all gears besides park for. sure is not acting complete right, how can I tell if it has both high and low or if one is both. thanks in advance

Unless im understanding you wrong a swing arm boot is not really an oil seal more of a dust dirt shield. As far as gear selector goes I would check my wiring connectors going to the information center and check fuses since none are working. You should be able to tell if your in low or high by feel, in low it is a lot more powerful like just creeping along . You say loosing oil is it leaking or just going away and is it differential oil or engine oil.

The boot is to keep dirt away from the drive shaft as Gw says.. It doesn't have oil in it. There may be oil leaking from the engine right near it though, through an oil seal.

To find and confirm oil leaks you should give the bike a wash to get all the oil off, then go for a short ride and have a good look for the first signs of oil leaking. It could be where a shaft comes out, or where two cases fit together, or at the oil filter or oil drain bung which might just need a new washer on it.. Best to have a good look though before tearing things apart. If after the short ride, oil is splashed everywhere or run down so you can't tell where it's starting from, then clean it off again and go for a shorter ride, just a hundred yards.

For the lights you should probably check fuses, inspect the wiring as best you can looking for broken wires or badly chafed wiring, then get a manual and have a read how to test the switch that operates the lights. Someone that's familiar with yamaha will probably have some ideas for you.

If you let me know the exact model designation, yfm400***, either FR, FAR, FPR,  I can have a look at the wiring diagram.

After i did my rebuild it seems to not want to shift well. I think the cable is alright, and when it does shift its nice and solid. I have to basically use my hand to shift and i have to pull or push it very far, like max travel, to get it to shift. I also tried adjusting the clutch set screw. Any ideas where to go next, or maybe i should just grab a new cable to try.

      Hi
Is looking for a quad to pull a flail mower as my first priority, but also a bit of fun.
So its going to be pulling a flail mower on high grass / weed on a bumpy field at pretty low speed.
My budget is not high, so is mostly looking at a old Yamaha Kodiak 400cc / Suzuki Eiger 400cc or similar.
What machine would you recommend  ?  - Really want a solid machine since I am no mechanic but can perform a early service myself.

(English is not my native, hope it makes sense)

Fixing for a friend. Atv was at a different friends house to be fixed and he rebuilt the carb and had it running nice, then it shut off and no more. He replaced the key and the coil.

So he got busy, so I am helping, I checked the wiring from the stator to the cdi, and from the cdi to the coil. All is good. I checked resistance on the pickup coil, good, and on the source coil, open. I buy a new stator (China) and the 4 prong plug only has 3 wires in it while mine has all 4. I checked resistance in the source coil and it's in the 300's. I pulled one of the old pickup wires out of the old stator and wire it in the new one. Still no spark.

Why do the wires differ, I checked the VIN again and it's "J" for the year and I got a 1988 stator. Please help!

I am having an issue with a hs500. I bought it broken and have been trying to get it running. It seems to be starving for fuel. If I put my hand over the intake it will crank but will not run for very long because I'm not able to get the correct airflow with my hand. The things I have done so far are. Replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, mass airflow sensor, idle air adjuster, fuel injector, cleaned the throttle body, replaced the ecu, and still the same issue. I notice the injector does not spray when removed from the head. I dont know if that is common.

I am out of ideas on what to do next. I have removed the fuel line from the injector and it is getting plenty of fuel. If anyone has an idea on what could possibly be the issue I would be happy to try anything at this point.
