Recently picked up a 1991 Lt230e for repair. Compression is a little low Id say, around 80psi, I also have spark but the spark is odd . When cranking the spark is a constant arc. I’ve got it to sputter but never fully turn on. I believe the spark is my issue, being constant and not detonating at the right time. I’m not sure whether this issue is an electrical fault like some missing ground, a faulty cdi, or a timing issue. Any ideas where I should start?

If it hasn't been run in a long time the compression may come up after a good run.. If you can get it to run at that compression. If you put about a teaspoon of oil down the spark-plug hole and do another compression test and the comp comes up a lot it's got bad rings and so It probably will need work, but if it stays almost the same comp then it's likely just dirty valves. If you pull it over slowly listening at the carb and exhaust you might hear leaking valves.. might.

The spark sounds like a faulty cdi unit. It's just possible though someone has connected things up incorrectly though so it needs diagnosing.

Good advice Mech! My only addition is my expierience with CDI is they either spark or dont spark and even if they dont spark its not always the CDI other thing need to be checked before replacing, but yours is sparking if its a good blue spark thats what you want, it may not appear really blue in bright light but if its a healthy spark with a pop you are probably OK. If its a weak spark not much pop and you really have to determine if it was actually a spark or inconsitant spark it could be a ground problem.

i just picked this up. was told ran fine but overheating issues led to replacing head gasket and head. has not ran since. he is not a mechanic but helped someone else who he could not get back to finish job, got aggravated and put up for sale. i was thinking timing issues. i have 110-120psi on all 3 cylinders so i think valves are correct. dont know about distributor yet. however i have no spark. i have no power going to ignition coil. tried to follow white wire but gets lost in wire harness. does anyone have a wiring diagram? can anyone tell me what conditions have to be met before starting. motor turns over so i would think all safeties are met but you never know.

Does the 1987 moto 4 350 have a low oil sensor that kills spark? Or are these too old for that kind of thing?

Question for you guys. I have a 98 bayou 220 that I picked up cheap cause it's wasn't running. So it's has very low compression. It is getting spark and fuel.
What should my next course of action be? Any other tests I should perform or where to start looking?
      Thanks in advance.
