i just bought a yamaha moto 4, i have sprayed 'start ya barstard' into the carb and on the spark plug and it doesnt even fire! although when i have the spark plug on the outside of the motor it shows spark, the engine also leaks oil from the starter,

It needs a better spark to jump under compression than it does at atmospheric pressure.

A new spark plug might fix it, or the coil or plug lead/cap might be defective and letting the spark jump out of the engine, but once in and under compression the spark might find it easier to jump to earth through some bad insulation or an internal short in the coil.

Most coils they say to test by making sure they will jump a spark six mill which is 1/4 inch. If it will spark that far then it's internal insulation is good, but the cap or wire could still short.

I'm an old mechanic, and I agree.

Now days we mostly just toss used plugs, but years ago we cleaned and tested them, and the test was to use a spark machine which let you adjust the air pressure the plug was under while it was sparking. Lots of plugs that started out sparking fine would stop sparking at around 80 Lb  pressure.. which is way less than engine compression.

I'm curious - how do you know it isn't sparking under compression? That would be pretty hard to test for...

On the other hand, doing a basic compression test might give an idea of the shape this engine is in.

Good point Spock. Always good to confirm the simple things first.

If you aren't sure if it's got compression Heath then a simple and rough check is to poke your finger in the plug hole and give the engine a crank. If it blows your finger out it probably has enough to at least fire, but if you can keep your finger in there sealing the compression, it's not enough.

I am unable to find a wiring diagram for this UTV.  When I turn the switch to on, the contractor does not engage.  The Brake pressure switch and the parking brake switches work correctly. What else should I be looking for?  All of the diagrams I have found are for newer models and the wire color coding is different.

      Thanks

Bought a 88 big bear 350 4x4 took it for a run and lost spark, found it was stator so I replaced that then took it for a long run and it sat for 2 days and no spark again, this time stator tests good on ohms and voltage for source and pick up coils so I started replacing things including regulator, ignition, ignition coil and plug cap, spark plug and everything tests great including all safety switches until the orange wire for ignition coil from the cdi it only reads 3 volts so I replaced the cdi and still 3 volts, any ideas??

Fixing for a friend. Atv was at a different friends house to be fixed and he rebuilt the carb and had it running nice, then it shut off and no more. He replaced the key and the coil.

So he got busy, so I am helping, I checked the wiring from the stator to the cdi, and from the cdi to the coil. All is good. I checked resistance on the pickup coil, good, and on the source coil, open. I buy a new stator (China) and the 4 prong plug only has 3 wires in it while mine has all 4. I checked resistance in the source coil and it's in the 300's. I pulled one of the old pickup wires out of the old stator and wire it in the new one. Still no spark.

Why do the wires differ, I checked the VIN again and it's "J" for the year and I got a 1988 stator. Please help!

Hello all, I have a 2006 Polaris Sawtooth with no spark. It has a dead battery but with a jump pack on it, it will still not Spark. Plug is good, Throttle ETC is not closed, Stator pick up coil seems to Ohm out in the correct range, Unsure how to properly check the CDI. And when ignition is on the Neutral and reverse light come on but after cranking just the neutral stays on.

      Any help would be great,

      Thanks!

Just getting into this issue really. Been replacing solenoids but now I'd like to track down the problem. This time I'm not getting neutral/reverse lights or start button. Was on a creek ride when it started doing this recently. It cranks by arcing the solenoid and gives me no light or start button but if I crank with the pull cord....the neutral light and the button work. Turn it off and try to crank with the key and nothing. I'm looking into the safety switch issue tomorrow and re charging the battery. Just figured this was odd enough of a problem that you guys might be familiar. Thanks
