Replaced bad stator, have spark now but timing appears to be off. Pulled timing cover, reset timing to Clymer manual specs and tested again. About broke my hand using pull start. Still appears to be out of timing. Removed head from jug and inspected. With the timing gear attached to the crankshaft, valves appear to be opening and closing correctly. Is it normal to have about a 1/4 turn of play before the 1st valve opens? Any ideas on how to get the timing correct?

Check the shear key on the flywheel, if the key is sheared and the timing is off just a bit, you get that snap-back on the starter like that. I am not sure exactly what you mean by 1/4 turn of play. Are you saying you turn the crank about 1/4 turn before the valve opens, or you turn 1/4 turn before the cam starts to move. The cam should move immediately when you rotate the crank. If you turn the motor backwards, you may get some slack and the cam won't turn right away. Make sure you are turning the motor in the same direction that the wheels would turn if you were going forward. Turn the motor all the way around the in the correct direction and stop on the TDC mark without turning the motor back the other way. Wait a few, then start turning it again and watch to make sure the camshaft starts turning with the crank, it will turn slower as it only revolves once for every two revolutions of the crank, but it should start turning as soon as the crank does. If your cam does not move right away, you may have a stretched timing chain or a bad timing chain tensioner.

Your stator should have adjustment. When you installed the new one, did you try loosening the screws and adjusting? Slotted holes should allow this. Not positive on your machine.

That is a good point Lawny. There should also be a timing plate on the old stator, that will set the timing at the stock location, the new stator may have come with its own I guess. Either way, make sure you have the timing plate, if there is one, installed correctly.

      1989 Moto 4 YFM350ERW intermittent spark.
Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark.

What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual.
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.
As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a really Heavy Duty ATV cover. I have bought several and they do keep the water off somewhat, but they are very thin and do not contour with the shape very well and water pools up in the rack louvers. I think i may be looking for a heavy canvas one, if anyone has a recommendation it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi my name is Greg and I just acquired a free 2000 yamaha kodiac 400 4x4 with the ultramatic transmission that does not run. I plan to get it going and use it around my property
