My 1997 Kodiak 400 just suddenly started running really bad. It sounds great in neutral, but as soon as you put it into gear it starts bogging down and cutting out real bad. I did find a hole in the intake and I replaced it, but that didn't help at all. Does anyone have any suggestions? I did take the carb apart and cleaned it and noticed that that wasn't the first time it had been apart. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to QUADCRAZY! Did you check the float operation when you cleaned it? Might need a rebuild. May be fuel starving.

Ya, the float looked fine, but there was some other questionable things in it, but then again I don't know much about the guts of a carberator. It actually seems more like it's being constantly flooded and you can smell the gas. But again everything sounds fine in neutral. Even revving it up it sounds good. It's just when you put it in gear.

If there is a reverse rev limiter on that machine, it could be assed up, if the machine thinks it is in reverse somehow, this limiter may be kicking in. Other possibilities could be weak spark, improper valve adjustment, or some kind of carb problem. I would check all the simple basic stuff first, try a new plug, check the valves, timing etc... Also, check to see if the machine has a rev limiter that could be getting activated when you engage the forward gears, try to locate a sensor or switch that lets the machine know when it is in reverse. If you find anything, try to bypass the rev limiter somehow and see if that helps. I would recommend getting a repair manual, finding these things will be alot easier with one, they are good to have anyway.

I picked up this ATV that had no spark. The previous owner said he was driving it and it died and would not start. He discovered it had no spark. He replaced the CDI and the coil with no luck. He got tired of it and I bought it. I replaced the stater and now it has strong spark. Now, it starts for a second or two then dies. It will not stay running. I have checked the timing and it is spot on. The valves are adjusted correctly. I see no warn issues with the cam. I put the original CDI and coil back on it. Same problem exists. Compression is at 65 psi (has decompression mechanism),
I took off the muffler in case the issue was clogged pipes. No change. I replaced the spark plug. No change. The carb was an aftermarket so I put a Niche carb on with no change. I bypassed the fuel pump and that did nothing to solve the problem.
I don't know if this is a carb issue or an ignition issue. I am looking around locally for an OEM carb to try out but not sure that will fix the problem.
Can anyone help me solve this problem. I am running out of ideas.
      Thank you for your time
      Bill

HI everyone. New to this forum. I have 98 Kawasaki Bayou 400 with an apparent electrical issue. I have the Clymer manual, but I am not exactly sure where to start. The issue started a month ago and the neutral light would go on and off intermittently. Eventually it went completely off , and I thought it was a shifting issue. I took the case off and checked the clutch and all mechanical shifting components are good, so I think I eliminated that. The switch sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Last time I tried, I did hear a clicking sound near where the battery is right before the light went out. Does anyone have any ideas where to start? Hoping this is an easy fix.
